Project: Rooftop And Valiant Announce “Shadowman: In A New Light” Redesign Contest

Project: Rooftop has announced a new partnership with Valiant Entertainment to host their next redesign contest, spotlighting on the hero Shadowman. Originally created back in 1994 by Jim Shooter, Steve Englehart, David Lapham and Bob Layton, Shadowman has become one of the biggest heroes in independent comics, selling over 5 million copies of his long-running series and prompting several video game spin-offs. And now with the character returning in an all-new series, Shadowman in November, Project: Rooftop is organizing artists worldwide to submit their own renditions of the hero for prizes, reviews and recognition.

Shadowman is one of the key figures in the Valiant comics universe; a dark vigilante who strives to banish the sinister forces that try to creep their way into our reality. The character returns in November with an all-new series by co-writer/artist Patrick Zircher and writer Justin Jordan.

Joining the regular P:R judges is veteran comics artist and artist of the upcoming Shadowman series, Patrick Zircher. Zircher is responsible for the modern designs of both Shadowman and Ninjak, and previously worked on a variety of Marvel titles including Captain America and Iron Man.

Valiant Entertainment is providing prizes for the top three places in our contest. First place will receive a copy of the rare Shadowman Black, the Bill Sienkiewicz variant cover to Shadowman #1 and the Dave Johnson variant covers to Shadowman #1 and #2. Second place will receive the Dave Johnson variant covers to Shadowman #1 and #2 as well as a complete run of the Valiant books released since the company returned this summer. Third place will receive the Dave Johnson variant covers to Shadowman #1 and #2.

Entries for “Shadowman: In A New Light” should aim to create a new take on the hero that stays true to the character’s concept and history and only revise their costume, as if your design was in the running to be used in current continuity. All entries must be received by November 30, 2012 at midnight EST. As usual, check the contest guidelines, include your name and website, and send your art as an attachment in jpg, png, or gif format to projectrooftop@gmail.com.

NYCC 2012 – Dudebox Star Wars Contest

During this year’s New York Comic Con, UK based vinyl toy brand Dudebox will be going back to their roots and revisiting the world of Star Wars. On their booth, #2915, they will have on display an ultra rare R2D2 model. Back in 1977, Dudebox founder Robert Beecham was given a license to produce Star Wars toiletries, he made some of the very earliest merchandise for the film franchise. To celebrate that occassion, he created 10 metalised vinyl, hand painted figures from the original machine moulds that produced an R2D2 bubble bath bottle. These were given as private gifts to those close to the new business.

Now, with Dudebox taking its place among the contemporary pop art collectables market with their range of vinyl toys, one of these rare pieces of memorablia is being displayed at New York Comic Con and will be given away to one lucky winner of the free to enter contest.

Just head to the Dudebox booth, #2915, and enter your email address into the contest iPad. You will automatically be entered into the Comic Con prize draw. One lucky winner will be selected at random.

NYCC 2012 – Parsons + Dudebox collaborate on limited edition toy competition

This October at New York Comic Con, Parsons The New School for Design and Dudebox, the UK-based vinyl collectible company, will debut toy concepts by Parsons BFA Illustration students developed through a recent collaboration. Working either on computer or by hand, students created dozens of unique characters, complete with their own complex origin stories, likes and dislikes, and even smells. Parsons and Dudebox have narrowed down the field to four finalists, whose work will be presented at New York Comic Con. The winner, who will have his or her toy placed into production by Dudebox, in addition to receiving a cash prize, will be announced at a press event at the Dudebox booth, #2915, on October 11 at 6:30pm.

The four finalists are as follows:

  • “Mr. Sir” by Anastasia Lonkin, is a proper-looking gentleman, with a monocle and smartly waxed moustache, who enjoys tea and biscuits as much as Red Bull and Doritos.
  • “Bob,” by Loren Kang, is a sailor from Planet Pepp who is rendered in simple black, white, and red, and has two faces, one on each side of his head, which help him express his emotions.
  • “Glam Greaser,” by Katrina Richter, looks like a character from an outer-space production of Grease with her leopard jacket and kerchief. She likes to rock out with her band, The Knuckle Sandwiches.
  • “The Rallin,” by Cindy Tan, is a shy, gentle creature who grazes on plastic at the edges of landfills and whose scales – intricately designed overlapping triangles hand-painted by Tan — change color depending on its diet.

The collaboration with Dudebox was part of an Illustration Concepts course in the BFA Illustration program at Parsons taught by illustrator and faculty member Caty Bartholomew. Here, students focus on their individual development as an artist by realizing a concept that solves a presented challenge in a unique and original way. In this instance, the challenge was creating a commercially viable character design.

Dudebox was founded with a mission to both foster and facilitate enthusiasm for vinyl toy culture. Its business model has an emphasis on co-creation, and Dudebox works with its designers to develop their ideas. It also emphasizes ownership; each artist receives a royalty fee from the sale of his or her product. The Dudebox team encouraged students to think not just about the visual appeal of the character design, but also the story behind the character. Students were asked to write a character biography to give their design a world to exist in. the finalists were selected based upon the quality of their character designs, the expression of their stories and the suitability to turn the design into a production piece.

Rooftop Announces Winners for The “Fantastic Four: Fashion Forward” Redesign Contest

Project: Rooftop has announced the winner of their “Fantastic Four” Fashion Forward” Redesign contest. Judged by a panel of 10 people including Marvel artist Stuart Immonen, Dark Horse editor Rachel Edidin and NPR’s Glen Wledon, this latest P:R contest found its winner in a first-time P:R artist, New York-based Alejandro Bruzzese.

Immonen commented on the winners design:

I love the ligne claire art style and the dramatic pose.

Edidin called Bruzzese’s rendition of the team as “a science-adventurer team with the emphasis on the ‘science.'”

When asked about his design, the artist Alejandro Bruzzese was very specific.

As far as I’m concerned they’re explorers, not super-heroes. Thus the backpacks and practical clothes. I gave them their own colors as a sort of tribute to the Thunderbirds, Bionic Six, Super Sentai, Galaxy Trio… basically all the teams the Fantastic Four inspired in the first place.

Coming in a close second in P:R’s “Fantastic Four: Fashion Forward” contest is frequent name on the site and a multi-time finalist in our contests, Vanni LoRiggio. Rounding out the top three is Victor Newman.

To see each of these entries plus the other runner-ups and the comments from all our judges, visit ProjectRooftop.com.

Project: Rooftop is where cartoonists and illustrators bring their costume design skills to task in tribute to the superheroes and villains we’ve grown up with. This site is intended to promote the idea of superhero costume redesigning as a skill, specific to superhero media. They also aim to foster continued interest for these amazing characters and spotlight up-and-coming creators.

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope is On Hulu and We’ve Got Copies to Give Away!

You can watch the the full documentary directly on Hulu.

We’ve teamed up with NECA and are giving away two copies of Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope to celebrate it’s launch on Hulu. We have two copies of DVD packs with mini-figures of Stan Lee and Harry Knowles to give away and entry is easy.

How to enter:

Yes, it’s really that simple and you can do both to enter. We’ll run the contest through midnight Tuesday September 18, 2012 and you must be in the US to enter. I caught the movie when it was released on Video on Demand and then bought a copy at San Diego Comic-Con. It’s a fantastic documentary that shows off different aspects of fandom and the atmosphere you experience heading to SDCC, and really any convention in general. I can’t recommend it enough, it’s fun, entertaining and keeps you hooked throughout. This is a movie that embraces geek culture and celebrates it completely.

So, you can win a copy yourself, just by doing the above or watch it right now on Hulu.

Well, I dug into the website for the contest and found out more details.
