ComixTribe to Publish Rachel Deering’s Anathema

ComixTribe to Publish Rachel Deering’s Werewolf Horror Romance ANATHEMA

April 26, 2012 — Newburyport, MA — ComixTribe announced today that it will be publishing Anathema, a lesbian werewolf horror series created by Rachel Deering (Womanthology.)

“I’ve re-read Anathema five times now, and it gets better each time,” said ComixTribe publisher Tyler James. “This is a perfect first issue to what promises to be an outstanding series by Rachel Deering and Chris Mooneyham.  We’re thrilled to welcome Anathema to the tribe!”

Anathema is a six issue limited series horror comic that tells the story of Mercy Barlowe, a tormented young woman with a dark side. She must fight through treacherous lands and unspeakable horrors to reclaim her lover’s soul, which has been stolen by members of a sinister cult, bent on resurrecting a terrible and ancient evil.

Rachel Deering is excited to be bringing her property into the ComixTribe fold. “I’ve believed in ComixTribe from the start. After getting into the comic scene, I noticed that ComixTribe was a huge presence in  #comicmarket, so I was already convinced of their dedication to the medium.  I’m happy to have found a publisher that supports my vision.”

This month Deering has been hard at work on a Kickstarter Drive to fully fund production of the series.  With just 4 days to go, Anathema is currently 97% funded.  To help push the drive over the top, today, Deering is adding two new ComixTribe-themed reward levels:

  • $25 ComixTribe Fan Package – ComixTribe T-shirt, plus printed first edition copies of both issues #1 and #2 signed, and delivered to your home! International backers, please add $5 for shipping. (limit 15)
  • $101 ComixTribe SuperFan Package – ComixTribe T-shirt, Anathema 1-6, plus EVERY comic book or graphic novel ComixTribe publishes in 2012, including SCAM, THE RED TEN, OXYMORON, THE STANDARD, TEARS of the DRAGON, and more.  (limit 5)

A publication date for Anathema has not yet been set, though an early fall release seems likely.  ComixTribe recently signed a distribution deal with Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. for worldwide distribution, but has also established a robust micro-distribution network of indie friendly comic shops that it sells to directly.  Details for Anathema‘s distribution plan will be forthcoming.

“Vampires vs. werewolves in a love story that sticks with you long after you’ve put the book down?  What’s not to love?” said ComixTribe Editor-in-Chief Steven Forbes. “Rachel’s Anathema brings diversity and bredth to the line of ComixTribe books, while maintaining and enhancing our growing reputation as a publisher of quality indepedent titles.”

Anathema promises to be a terrific series. I’ll be there for all six issues that are currently planned, and (one hopes) the many additional stories to follow.” – Bill Willingham, Eisner award winning author of Fables

Visceral horror that merges the grotesque with the classic Hammer feel. Epicly fun and disturbing.” – Joshua Hale Fialkov, Eisner nominated writer of EchoesTumor, and I,Vampire

Rachel Deering’s first full length comic reads like the work of a seasoned pro. I was instantly hooked. I will be following her career closely. – Mark Poulton writer of Savage HawkmanAvengelyne, and A Cat Named Haiku

If you enjoy dark horror tales, lesbians, demons, witches, or werewolves, I’d advise you to check this one out as soon as possible. This book is sort of like if Edgar Allen Poe were a riotgrrl.” – Geektress.com

“This is exactly what I love about horror and werewolves.” Werewolf-News.com

From Micro-Distribution to Worldwide, ComixTribe Signs Deal with Diamond

ComixTribe Signs Deal with Diamond, Keeps Micro-Distribution Network Intact

April 19, 2012 — Newburyport, MA — Independent publisher ComixTribe announced today a partnership with Diamond Comics Distributors, Inc. to distribute its creator-owned titles including SCAM, THE RED TEN, and others in development.  The upstart publisher had previously made headlines by circumventing the traditional direct market distribution system and still managing to ship thousands of books directly to more than 50 retail partners. The Diamond deal will give the year-old publisher a direct pipeline to virtually every comic shop on the planet.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Diamond,” said ComixTribe publisher and THE RED TEN scribe, Tyler James.  “With the help of maverick retailers who took a chance on our books, we were able to demonstrate that our comics could find a readership and deserved shelf space.  Diamond took notice.”  Last November, ComixTribe humbly launched its first title THE RED TEN #1 in a handful of shops, before expanding thanks to a partnership with the New England Comics Retailers Alliance (NECRA.)  Joe Mulvey’s SCAM #1 built on that momentum, selling out of its first printing of 777 copies 10 days before going on sale in just 21 retailers.  The second issue of THE RED TEN in February was ComixTribe’s widest release to date, and it’s microdistribution network was comprised of more than 50 retailers when they inked the Diamond deal.

“We can’t speak highly enough of the retailers we worked with.  Whether they stocked five copies of our books or 500, we’ve always believed that every single retailer, and every single reader counts.  I promise to keep that in mind as we now have a fighting chance to get stocked in retailers nationwide,” said James.  The Diamond deal will mean ComixTribe books can be ordered alongside the biggest titles from Marvel, DC, Image, and the rest.

The Downside…

The one drawback to this opportunity is that new issues of SCAM and THE RED TEN will be delayed until the series has had a chance to distribute through Diamond.  ComixTribe’s Diamond debut book will be a relaunch of SCAM #1 which will be appearing in the June issue of Previews, for sale in August.  SCAM is “X-Men meets Oceans 11″ and involves a team of super-powered grifters on the biggest con of their lives…taking down a Vegas casino and getting revenge on a former teammate who double-crossed them. A remastered version of THE RED TEN #1 will appear in the August previews, for sale in October. The series will then release on a bi-monthly schedule.

“I’m beyond honored that SCAM will be the Diamond debut book for ComixTribe,” said writer/artist Joe Mulvey.  “I’m thrilled people everywhere will have a chance to pick it up at their local shops.  And for those readers who already have, I promise SCAM #2 will be worth the wait.”

The Presses are Broken on SCAM and THE RED TEN
Because ComixTribe is going back to press with a Diamond order in July, no more books for these series will be printed between now and this summer, and the books will soon be pulled from their online shop.  “First prints of SCAM and THE RED TEN have sold to collectors on Ebay for as high as $25-$59 dollars, so hopefully there’s an opportunity for any of these micro-distributed, limited run issues still out there to increase in value in advance of the Diamond relaunch,” said James.
“We Still See an Opportunity for Micro-Distribution”
ComixTribe also announced that they will continue to keep their micro-distribution network in place.  “While we’re excited to be working with Diamond, we think that there still is an incredible opportunity for short run, exclusive, micro-distributed titles in the comics market.  As a publisher, we see micro-distribution as an opportunity to market test new properties, or reward shops with exclusive books.  And I think retailers also see a value in having an elite selection of books, and stocking books virtually no one else has,” says James.
For this reason, ComixTribe has announced that it will continue to offer certain new titles directly to its micro-distribution network, including the North American retail debut of THE STANDARD by John Lees and Jonathan Rector, and a super limited run of THE RED TEN spin-off OXYMORON #1, featuring a script by Eisner-nominated writer Jason Ciaramella (THE CAPE) later this year.

The Oxymoron Strikes in Upcoming ComixTribe Anthology

THE RED TEN’s OXYMORON to Star in His Own Bloodsoaked Anthology

April 3, 2012 — Newburyport, MA — Maverick independent publisher ComixTribe announced today that it will debut OXYMORON, a graphic novel anthology featuring the psychotic contradiction-obsessed supervillain, at the 2012 New York Comic Con.The Oxymoron, a popular character from ComixTribe’s independently distributed cult hit series THE RED TEN by Tyler James and Cesar Feliciano, is being resurrected in this new spin off anthology, featuring nine short stories by hot up-and-coming writers and artists including Jason Ciaramella (The Cape, Godzilla), Mark Poulton (Savage Hawkman, Avengelyne), Joe Mulvey (SCAM) and more, and is being edited by ComixTribe publisher Tyler James.

“I knew as soon as we sold the first copy of THE RED TEN that readers were going to demand more Oxymoron,” said James.  “Rather than keep all the fun to myself, I reached out to a group of some of the hardest working writers in independent comics to help bring this character (back) to life.  The scripts are phenomenal–dark, twisted, zany, hilarious…and I’ve assembled a talented team of artists to bring them to life.”

While the full OXYMORON collection will debut at NYCC in October, ComixTribe plans to release a 28 page, limited run OXYMORON #1 in advance, through its established micro-distribution network comprised of retailers in the New England Comics Retailers Alliance (NECRA) and other indie-supportive retailers in North America.  ComixTribe has made headlines in 2012, opting to circumvent the traditional direct market distribution channel in favor of establishing direct partnerships with indie-supportive retailers for books such as SCAM and THE RED TEN.  “Savvy retailers are adding depth to their shop by stocking quality creator owned books like SCAM and THE RED TEN,” reports Larry Doherty of Larry’s Wonderful World of Comics, who has partnered with ComixTribe on New England Comic Retailer’s Alliance (NECRA) Variants for both SCAM #1 and THE RED TEN #2.

ComixTribe Expands Micro-Distribution, Doubles Direct-to-Retail Sales in February

ComixTribe Expands Micro-Distribution, Doubles Direct-to-Retailer Sales in February

February 24, 2012 — Newburyport, MA — Independent publisher ComixTribe announced today that it has doubled the number of retailers carrying its books this month, and will ship twice as many books direct-to-retailers in February as it did in January. Opting to circumvent the traditional direct market distribution channel in favor of establishing direct partnerships with indie-supportive retailers, ComixTribe books are now carried in more than 50 retail locations in the US and Canada.

On the heels of a strong January debut of SCAM #1 by Joe Mulvey, this month ComixTribe is releasing both THE RED TEN #2, the second installment of the ten-issue superhero murder mystery by Tyler James and Cesar Feliciano, as well as the 2nd printing of the sold out SCAM #1, featuring a new variant cover. “We couldn’t be more excited about where we are as a young imprint,” said ComixTribe Publisher Tyler James.  “SCAM has done extremely well for us, and orders for THE RED TEN are way up for the second issue.  ComixTribe has shipped more than 2,000 books direct-to-retailers in 2012, and we’re just getting started.” Both THE RED TEN #2 and SCAM #1 second printing debut February 29.

ComixTribe is one of a small number of independent creators and publishers pursuing a direct-to-retailer distribution model. “The micro distribution phenomenon is underway. Savvy retailers are adding depth to their shop by stocking quality creator owned books like SCAM and THE RED TEN,” reports Larry Doherty of Larry’s Wonderful World of Comics, who has partnered with ComixTribe on New England Comic Retailer’s Alliance (NECRA) Variants for both SCAM #1 and THE RED TEN #2.

While the direct market has sometimes been luke-warm to new publishers, many retailers are finding real value in carrying these books. “What I love about ComixTribe is that not only are they creating quality stuff, but they never stop hustling to promote it,” said Chris Proulx of Double Midnight Comic.  “THE RED TEN & SCAM have been very popular in our shop! They are selling better than mid-tier Marvel & the guys at ComixTribe work their butts off,” said Ernie Pelletier of Friendly Neighborhood Comics

THE RED TEN is a superhero re-telling of Agatha Christie’s classic whodunit “And Then There Were None.” The second issue, written by James and drawn by Cesar Feliciano, sees the “heroes” narrowly escape an explosion that destroyed of one of their own, only to find new and deadly horrors that await them on the island. The standard edition features a cover by CP Wilson, III (Stuff of Legend.) The NECRA variant features a cover by Alex Cormack (Chicara.)

SCAM is “X-Men meets Oceans 11″ and involves a team of super-powered grifters on the biggest con of their lives…taking down a Vegas casino and getting revenge on a former teammate who double-crossed them. The first printing of SCAM #1 was limited to just 777 copies, which sold out to retailers more than a week before release date.

“It’s been an unbelievable experience to have so many people enjoy the story I’ve been waiting for years to finally tell,” says SCAM‘s Mulvey.  SCAM #2, will be ComixTribe’s March release. Can’t wait until February 29 when THE RED TEN #2 releases in select comic retailers across North America?  The get your @$$ to Friendly Neighborhood Comics in Bellingham, MA Saturday, February 25 for a special PRE-RELEASE SIGNING EVENT featuring THE RED TEN creators Tyler James and Cesar Feliciano!

Following up a January launch of SCAM #1 (IGN.com’s book of the week), this is the second month in a row ComixTribe will be distributing new material directly to its growing network of retail partners.

“We’re having a lot of fun with this,” said ComixTribe publisher and THE RED TEN co-creator Tyler James.  “We couldn’t have asked for a better launch for SCAM, and we’re thrilled to follow it up with the next chapter of THE RED TEN.  I don’t know what the ceiling is on DIY distribution, but considering we’re shipping more books in February than we did in January, I can say with confidence that we haven’t hit it yet.”

Scam’s Mulvey Pays Tribute to Creator-Owned Comics

Official Press Release

It’s No SCAM, Mulvey Pays Tribute to Creator Owned Comics

February 2, 2012 — New York, NY — Joe Mulvey is creating a series of homage first printing sketch covers variants for his hit debut comic SCAM #1, based on many of his favorite creator-owned comics.

“I want to bring more attention to the amazing contributions of the independent comics scene,” said Mulvey. “The books I’m referencing are those I’ve enjoyed and that have affected my storytelling and enjoyment of comics in one way or another. I hope that everyone who picks up a sketch cover copy of SCAM #1 or even just sees one, will be curious enough about the image to go search out the original inspiration. There’s too much talent within the comics industry for the Big Two to contain.”

So far, Mulvey has done homage covers to popular creator owned titles such as Blair Butler and Kevin Mellon’s Heart, Nathon Edmonson and Tonci Zonjic’s Who Is Jake Ellis, and Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore’s The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, from Image comics. Mulvey (@joemulv) has been Tweeting images of these sketch cover variants daily, and posting the collection on the SCAM website.

SCAM #1, the double-sized first installment of a five-issue mini-series, is the latest release from creator-owned publisher ComixTribe (The Red Ten, The Standard.) Releasing in just a few dozen comic shops with a first printing of 777 last week, SCAM has garned critical praise.

SCAM is packed with exciting moments and offers up enough of a twist on the genre that readers will find it enjoyable and fresh. It’s a genuine treat and I’m optimistic it’ll continue to deliver as the series progresses.”  ~ Miguel Perez,  IGN

Review – The Hero Code #1 and The Red Ten #1

The theme for this pairing is “the,” just kidding, actually it’s two quality books independently published, but both would fit at a major publisher.  2011 was the year I really dove into “indie’ books and because of that discovered quality like these two.

The Hero Code #1

I’ll start right out and say, the comic is very familiar.  There’s the “Superman,” the “Wonder Woman,” the “Batman” type characters, but the way the story unfolds, how each of those characters are portrayed and especially with the solid art, I just don’t care.  I discovered the series on Kickstarter and happily contributed towards it, but when I saw the product I helped get produced, I was ecstatic.  This is a comic I’d pick off of the shelf or be excited to get in Artist Alley at a convention.  It’s quality.

The premise behind the series is that every human on the planet holds within them a genetic coding which grants the carrier great powers. The catch – this code only activates when we are faced with near-extinction level threats. The series explores ideas about time, reality, and what it means to be a hero.

The first issue is all set up.  Full of action that just pops off the page with amazing art.  I got to the end and immediately wanted more, a very good sign.  The comic is familiar, but there’s an excitement and energy about it that are missing at times from other similar books.  That feel makes the comic stand out and makes this one of my favorite finds of 2011.

The Red Ten #1

I’m not much of a fan of books.  I really didn’t like reading them growing up, so the ones I really enjoyed I could count on my hand.  Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians or And Then There Were None is one of those books I loved.  The Red Ten is the super hero version of that story, which makes me wonder why the hell that hasn’t been done before?!

When the world’s greatest detective is violently murdered by her nemesis, the world’s foremost super team and her former sidekick band together to bring the villain to justice. However, the mission goes terribly wrong, and before the night is out each of the ten “heroes” will pay dearly for past transgressions.

What was fun reading this comic was, I had no idea that it’s similar to one of my favorite books.  I got to the end and had a smile on my face.  It’s a murder mystery except anyone can be the murderer or victim and I’m expecting twists and turns like the book it’s based off of.  The art is solid, pacing great, everything is top notch.

This was another comic I got to the end and wanted to read more.  It was that good and that entertaining.  Here’s hoping we see issue two soon, I really want to know who did it.
