Free Mars Web Comic in print July 2012 from Ape Entertainment

(San Diego, CA-January 19, 2012) Ape Entertainment announced today that they have become ownership partners in the Free Mars property, currently a web comic with a print OGN releasing in July 2012. Free Mars is a gritty sci-fi rock opera set against the backdrop of a dystopian Mars colony in the year 2339. As civil war looms on the Red Planet, the Revolution finds an unlikely symbol in the form of a punk band. The group quickly discovers, however, that their new fame comes at a price. Created and written by David Pauwels with art from Nicolas Giacondino, the graphic novel will contain the first year of web comics that started in July 2010. Ape Entertainment has helped publish many creator owned projects but Cvrfelt strongly enough about this project to help finance it.

Brent Erwin COO of Ape Entertainment explained “We are so lucky to work with so many great creators but this concept had the right mix of timeliness and unique concept. Music as such
an  escape that it’s viewed almost like drugs. How many of us would DIE without our ipod or cell phone? Themes of oppression and repression; it might be set in 2339 but there are many similarities to today’s society.” A digital version of the book will be available through the Comics+ app from Iverse Media.

Cut the Rope Digital Comic Series Now Available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

ZeptoLab and Ape Entertainment Partner to Tell the Mysterious Story of Om Nom

SAN FRANCISCO – December 20, 2011 – Shazaam! Om Nom™, the loveable character from the award winning mobile game Cut the Rope™, is now a comic book hero! Millions of fans that play Cut the Rope have fallen in love with the adorable green monster. Now, through the new comic series released today in the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, they will start to learn more about Om Nom and his fascination for candy!

According to Misha Lyalin, CEO of ZeptoLab, creators of the award winning Cut the Rope game, “The comic book is just the first step in broadening the reach of the Cut the Rope brand. Plush toys, apparel and accessories were recently released in the US. We are expanding all over the world and new items will be rolling out over the next several months.  On the licensing and merchandising side, we see tremendous opportunities to bring Om Nom into homes around the world.”

Based on one of the most downloaded mobile games of all-time, the Cut the Rope No. 1 digital comic series begins in a quaint little town where opportunity sometimes knocks, but in thirteen-year-old Evan Coulton’s case, opportunity leaves a plain and uninteresting box on his doorstep. Of course, the surprise contents inside are anything but plain and uninteresting.

Before Evan realizes what’s going on, both his kitchen and his life have been turned upside down by a little green monster with an endless appetite for sweets. Om Nom’s sugar levels leave him either high on energy or lazily collecting more candy, as he and Evan discover just how much they have in common. Fans can follow the adventures of Evan and Om Nom as trouble unfolds in one of the most anticipated new comic series today.

ZeptoLab developed the digital comic series in conjunction with Ape Entertainment, who has a proven track record with comic book apps as demonstrated by the company’s success with the hugely popular Pocket God digital comic series.

“With millions of fans around the world playing Cut the Rope, the new comic series provides the first glimpse into the story of Om Nom,” said Semyon Voinov co-founder, ZeptoLab.

“Ape Entertainment immediately shared our vision for extending the brand into the comic world. The result of their efforts is one of the most interesting examples of how to bring a video game to a new medium.”

“The Cut the Rope digital comic series is much more than a pages to pixels app – it’s an experience that taps into the power of iOS and unleashes the world of Om Nom to fans across the globe,” said David Hedgecock, CEO of Ape Entertainment. “We believe this is the exact direction that will satiate comic book fans’ appetite in the digital age, as well as offer a reason to continue coming back to the App Store and local comic shops.”

The first three issues of the on-going series are currently available on the iTunes App Store at www.apple.com/appstore/ – the first issue is free and additional issues are available for $1.99 through in-app purchase.

Erwin, Ape Co-Publisher. “We’re extremely pleased to see how well fans of Pocket God and fans of comic books have taken to the series.”

Created by Dave Castelnuovo and Allan Dye, founders of Bolt Creative, Pocket God has consistently maintained a spot in the “Top 25” games in the iTunes App Store for two and a half years running. Review – Freakshow #2

Freakshow #2I loved the first issue of the series, and it was going to be tough for Freakshow #2 to hold up and match that quality.  It absolutely does.  The second issue of the series picks up where the first ended.  The series is a mix of horror and action, with heroes that aren’t what you expected.  Written by David Server and Jackson Lanzing with art by Joe Suitor the story is a series you probably aren’t reading, but need to give it a chance.

Ape Entertainment’s long-awaited dark superhero epic launches with a giant-sized debut issue! When five refugee survivors develop monstrous mutations from a devastating chemical explosion that leaves their city in ruins, they band together to seek revenge. But do these terrifying new abilities make them monsters — or heroes?

As I said in my first review, the series has more to share with a super hero comic than horror.  Yeah, the “heroes” are disfigured monsters, but they think they’re doing good.  It’s a great mix of story and mood.  The art is different, there’s just something about the look to it you don’t see often.  The line art, coloring, everything just pops to it.

I’m sure you haven’t read the first issue (even though I gave it a 9), but this is a series that deserves your dollar.  It’s a definite buy.

Freakshow #1I had no idea what to expect going into Freakshow #1.  I thought it’d be a horror comic, or some comic version of gore porn.  How wrong was I.  And how solid it was.  Written by David Server and Jackson Lanzing with art by Joe Suitor the story is nothing I expected.

The comic shares more with super hero comics than horror.  It’s main characters might be freaks, but the writing makes you sympathetic towards them.  The background as to what caused them to gain their abilities is interesting and different.  I don’t even know how best to describe the series.  It’s just fantastic.

The mood, story, art, it’s all great.  Ape Entertainment should have a hit on their hands.  I can’t wait to read more and definitely want to see what else Ape has out there.  This is over-sized first issue is well worth the buy.
