Comic Book Weekly Reviews – 7/13/11

It’s a thick stack of books dominated Flashpoint tie-ins and the debut of some high profile series.  What’s worth the money and what can you skip?  Find out below!

Alpha Flight #2 – There’s definitely something appropriately “Canadian” about this series both in it’s topics and it’s voice.  We get a better sense as to exactly is going on and somewhat the Unity Party is up to.  The series hasn’t blown me out of the water yet, but it at least has a unique voice and feel.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #2 – I said after reading the first issue whether we really needed a mini-series of the still very young and fresh American Vampire, but the answer is yes.  Both series are showing off a quality that justifies and any chance to speed up the story telling is much appreciated and wanted.

Story: 9 Art: 8.5 Overall: 9

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #521 – For all those that laughed and moaned when they say sketches for the American Panther, I guess they get to eat their words.  Sadly the story is tied in a bit with Fear Itself, but if it didn’t have to be, the story would be very solid dealing with hate and fear in America.  If anything, the story so far doesn’t go enough, but it’s still a great read.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.5

Booster Gold #46 – Booster continues to fight Doomsday and the story is ok, but really is one extended fight scene that doesn’t move the story along or give us a greater glimpse into the world of Flashpoint.  The art too seems to have slipped a little.  Not as good as the first two entries.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Captain America #1 – And a new Captain America series is launched almost jettisoning Brubaker’s previous run.  The first issue though is beyond solid with great action, interesting mystery and a great look.  This is everything I hoped for and more.  Very great read and a must buy.

Story: 9 Art: 8.75 Overall: 9

Daken: Dark Wolverine #11 – Daken has turned into a drug addict which is a bit of an interesting story line.  I like the art style switching between him being normal and being high and as always the twisted sexual games he plays is something you don’t see in too many other series.  This is one that’s flying under the radar and worth the read.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.25

Deadpool #40 – This probably could also be called “When Deadpool Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.”  Deadpool gets sent to a psych ward, though it’s in England, which doesn’t really make sense, but oh well….

Story: 7 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7

Fear Itself: Spider-Man #3 – Probably the best of the Fear Itself tie-ins, the story sores because it focuses not on Spider-Man and his rather uphill battle, but instead of average people suffering from the madness of the world around them.  A solid three issue limited series that’s much better than the event series it’s tied into.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.75

FF #6 – So much that’s very cool, but if feels wrong for Black Bolt to return under anyone’s guidance other than DnA.  At the same time, I’m forced to say “huh?”

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

Flashpoint: Citizen Cold #2 – The issues starts off strong enough with the Rogues out to take on Cold, but the end is a bit confusing as to what’s exactly going on at times with the action not being clear enough.  Overall, still entertaining.

Story: 8 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8

Flashpoint: Deathstroke – And the Curse of the Ravager #2 – The fight between Aquaman and Deathstroke’s crew continues in another issue that’s mostly fight. Again, not much movement and showing the world that is Flashpoint.  For a great setting sail, the story seems to have lost it’s momentum.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8 Overall: 7.75

Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman #2 – The origin of Emperor Aquaman and it’s a very good read.  We get a good sense of who he is and why he is the way he is due to this issue and…. it moves the overall story forward.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.5

Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown #2 – Something was a bit uneven about this issue.  It wasn’t bad, but wasn’t particularly good either.  I guess overall, I feel like it just doesn’t fit into Flashpoint and doesn’t add anything to the overall universe.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Ghost Rider #1 – I wasn’t too impressed by the #0.1 issue and the first issue didn’t blow me away either.

Story: 6.5 Art: 7.25 Overall: 6.75

Green Lantern #67 – Now that was an ending, but we’re left with tons of questions as to what to expect in the relaunch of this series.  The War of the Green Lanterns was uneven at times, but the ending made up for it all.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Green Lantern Corps. #61 – A nice throwback issue that takes on a social issue and addresses it at a galactic level.  At the same time we’re introduced to all of the new Lanterns recruited during the war.  It’s a decent issue, but the series just seems to be killing time until DCnU kicks off.

Story: 7.25 Art: 7.25 Overall: 7.25

Journey Into Mystery #625 – While I will say the series is solid, it’s a bit too convoluted in it’s dealings and double dealings.  The story isn’t straightforward and you need a chart to keep track of all of the wheeling and double dealing.  The series is interesting though and this issue does give us a glimpse as to the origin of the Serpent.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8

Mystery Men #3 – We’re a little over the half way point and the series introduces some more “heroes” to the fold.  The story has a modern pulp feel to it that’s entertaining, but doesn’t quite meet the quality of The Twelve which it resembles.  It’s a good series, but might be best to read in trade form.

Story: 7 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7

The New Avengers #14 – I’m a bit mixed on the issue.  It focuses on Mockingbird and her new status as well as some issues Spider-Man is having and also what’s going on with Fear Itself.  There’s one scene in particular that’s very reminiscent of 9-11 that really caused a mixed stir of emotions that I’m still processing while I write this.  Is it over the top?  Maybe?  Is it one hell of a statement in one page?  Yes.  Is it beautifully drawn?  Absolutely.

Story: 8 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8

New Mutants #27 – Really a convoluted way to get Nate Grey back in the fold the story is so-so and the art actually sub-par for an “X” book.  Even with a reboot, the series isn’t what it should be.  It comes off as second class in many ways.

Story: 6.75 Art: 6.75 Overall: 6.75

The Red Wing #1 – Jonathan Hickman is a brilliant writer and this series is an interesting start.  I can’t say it’s quite up to snuff as his past indie series, but those are some of the best comics ever written.  An interesting start though.

Story: 8.25 Art: 7.5 Overall: 8

the Unwritten #27 – The series gets a bit more meta as the shift comes into how comic books have shaped the modern myth.  It’s definitely interesting to read and I wish I had someone to discuss it with.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Wolverine #12 – Folks still want revenge on Wolverine and this arc just doesn’t hold up either.  I like the idea of focusing on the folks that Wolverine has hurt through his actions, I’m just not sure this is the best way to go about it.

Story: 7 Art: 8.25 Overall: 7.25

X-Men: Schism #1 – And in one issue everything ramps up as the latest “X” event kicks off.  We’ve seen the prelude and we’ve gotten hints as to what expect, but now it’s game on.  Jason Aaron has had mixed results in my opinion of his handling of various “X” titles, but this limited series kicks off with a solid start.

Story: 9 Art: 8.75 Overall: 9

Catching Up on Reviews, Part 1 — X-Universe A-C (quinnelk)

Bookmark and Share

Okay, so it’s been a while since I’ve posted any reviews, but I didn’t want to let the previous comics I’ve read (all of which I’m catching up on) go without reviews and grades, so I’m going to do some pretty heavy catching up on reviews over the next two weeks. Instead of doing a strict chronology, I’m going to group them together by topic and alphabet. The first batch is X-Men comics that start with an A through a C.

Age of X: Universe #1 (Marvel) – One thing the X-Men comics have always been good at is telling good dystopian stories and Age of X has one of the better set-ups in that history. The Universe series is one of the common Marvel cash-in tie-in series to make more money off of a big event, but every once in a while those cash-ins provide us with good comics. This is one of those times. We find out here what the non-mutants are doing in this dystopia and the alternate characterizations of some of Marvel’s biggest heroes is chilling.

Story: 9 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.75

Age of X: Universe #2 (Marvel) – Issue two highlights the true nature of heroism that goes through some of the Marvel non-mutant heroes, even in a tale like Age of X, where many of them are anything but heroes. Captain America and Dr. Strange get the best examination here and the story isn’t quite as good as issue 1, but it’s still very good.

Story: 8.75 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.5

Alpha Flight #0.1 (Marvel) – I’ve always been a huge fan of Alpha Flight, discovering them as one of the first cultural links to my Canadian heritage (my father is from Montreal), and being sucked in by the complex and original stories and the amazing John Byrne art. It’s great to see the team restored to its former glory and done with such beautiful art from Ben Oliver and Dan Green. The story is a pretty good launch for the series, I just wish they had a more permanent home. Also good to see the comic display a gay interracial kiss so openly and as simply one of those things that happens in the real world.

Story: 8 Art: 9 Overall: 8.5

Alpha Flight #1 (Marvel) – I’m not sure I like that issue 1 of the mini-series is a Fear Itself tie-in, meaning that we don’t get as many Alpha-oriented tales that are their own tales and not someone else’s tales. The art continues to be great in this one, with the epic shot of Attuma riding a tidal wave being one of the best scenes of the year to date. The story also has a great twist that it’ll be fun to see how things work out in the end.

Story: 8.25 Art: 9.25 Overall: 8.75

Astonishing X-Men – Xenogenesis #5 (Marvel) – The best thing about this issue is that it wraps up one of the worst mini-series from Marvel in a few years. The story’s end isn’t any better than the rest of the series in its pointlessness and departure from the nature of the characters and the art continues to be some of the worst coming from Marvel.

Story: 5 Art: 3.5 Overall: 4.25

Astonishing X-Men #36 (Marvel) – Some of the art in this issue is great — such as a closing shot of Fin Fang Foom — but a lot of the faces and details are subpar or too anime-like for my tastes. The story is nothing great, with the use of characters like Fin Fang Foom and Mentallo not being particularly compelling.

Story: 6.5 Art: 5 Overall: 5.75

Astonishing X-Men #37 (Marvel) – Even fewer of the big shots from artists Jason Pearson and Jason Pichelli means more bad facial shots. That’s not good. The story continues from the previous issue with no real increase in tension or compelling points. It’s not that this issue is bad, but it certainly isn’t that good, either.

Story: 6.25 Art: 5.5 Overall: 6

Astonishing X-Men #38 (Marvel) – I’m not sure about the off-sequence issues here, as this is part 1 of the next storyline, when the previous storyline hasn’t finished yet. The art isn’t particularly good and the story is only somewhat better. There’s a return of the Brood, one of the greatest X-villains ever and a good twist ending, but it’s not enough and it’s not the next chapter of the story we were following.

Story: 7 Art: 4 Overall: 5.5

Astonishing X-Men #39 (Marvel) – While Nick Bradshaw’s art isn’t the same as the art done in the earlier Fin Fang Foom/Mentallo issues, it isn’t any better, either. Astonishing X-Men once had the best art/writing combos in the X-comics, these days it seems like it’s at the other end of the spectrum.

Story: 6 Art: 5 Overall: 5.5

Cyclops One-Shot (Marvel) – I’m not sure what the point of these one-shots with the original X-Men is, but they don’t seem to serve any purpose that I can tell. The art here is cartoonish (and not in a good way) and the story makes little sense in terms of continuity or character development for Cyclops.

Comic Book Weekly Reviews – 6/15/11 Part 1

Bookmark and Share

It’s a thick stack of books this week dominated by event tie-ins.  What’s worth your hard earned dollars and what should be recycled?  Find out below.  This is the first part with the second running tomorrow.

Alpha Flight #1 – Much like the #0.1 issue, this first one shows a lot of promise, but doesn’t quite blow me away like a first issue should.  I definitely ended the book with a “what the hell?” and want to see what comes next, but this definitely isn’t a comic I’d enthusiastically recommend.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Avengers #14 – A Fear Itself tie-in continues the interview story telling technique as the Avengers tell their take on Ben Grimm’s transformation and the Red Hulk’s role on the team.  It’s a decent story if a bit brief in substance.

Story: 7.5 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.5

Avengers Academy #15 – A Fear Itself tie-in as the students head to war but are they too young, too inexperienced?  The teachers have to split from the students to take on other threats in a decent tie-in to Marvel’s summer event.

Story: 7 Art: 6.75 Overall: 7

Cinderella: Fables are Forever #5 – Ok, so that was a twist ending that was a bit much, even for a series based off of our favorite fairy tales.  Something was just off with that part, but it’s definitely entertaining to think about.

Story: 7 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.25

Daken: Dark Wolverine #10 – Daken heads to LA to take over another city and this first part of a new arc is a bit choppy in the story telling, but as usual holds a lot of promise for a character that doesn’t get the respect he deserves.  It’ll all come down to see how this unfolds, but so far so good.

Story: 7.5 Art: 8 Overall: 7.5

Fear Itself: The Home Front #3 – Four more short stories about the goings on with Fear Itself.  The main one is Speedball’s experience during the event with the second main story about the Agents of Atlas.  The one pages about a woman’s move to Paris is the best of the bunch with the story about Cardiac coming in a close second.  Out of all of the tie-ins for the event.  This one is consistently one of the best.

Story: 8 Art: 7.75 Overall: 8

Fear Itself: Youth in Revolt #2 – The C list characters are put to the test but really the point on this limited series is to see what happens to Thor Girl with her Asgardian connections.  The story is one of the better series having to do with Fear Itself, but still not as good as events past.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.75

Flashpoint: Deadman and the Flying Graysons #1 – As seems to be the case with the Flashpoint tie-ins, quality is the name of the game.  For DC’s summer and world changing event, the art and story has been kicked up a notch and for the first time ever, got me excited about the DC world.  This one has a bit of a twist combining numerous characters we will recognize and I don’t want to give away too much as this first issue is very fun.

Story: 9 Art: 9 Overall: 9

Flashpoint: Grodd of War #1 – After conquering Africa was is a leader to do.  Conquest is about recognition and accomplishment, it’s a challenge and when Grodd has finished his main quest he gets rather, well, bored.  What’s a leader to do.  This one shot focuses on the would be ruler of the world, and his slice of the world of Flashpoint.  Quite good.

Story: 9 Art: 8.75 Overall: 9

Flashpoint: Legion of Doom #1 – Another Flashpoint tie-in and another quality mini-series.  This issue focuses on the villains of the world and a prison they are housed in.  It’s pretty damn cool, and it’ll be interesting to see how this all comes together with the main story.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8 Overall: 8.5

Flashpoint: Wonder Woman and the Furies #1 – What caused the rift between Wonder Woman and Aquaman?  This first issue has all of the answers and it’s much more Shakespearean than imagined.  A fantastic first issue that’s right up there as one of the best.

Story: 9.25 Art: 9 Overall: 9.25

Generation Hope #8 – A pretty decent issue for a series I’ve generally been down on.  The X-Men go to court to keep Teon and we learn more about  his powers and not all is what it seems.  It’s a really good issue for the series, now, if only they can keep the quality up.

Story: 8 Art: 7.75 Overall: 8

G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes #2 – A slice of the “Cobra Civil War” storyline, Snake Eyes and a few Joes are on a mission to find a mysterious member of Cobra.  The story and all three G.I. Joe comics have been fantastic.  I can’t wait to see where it all goes.

Story: 9 Art: 8.5 Overall: 9

Graveyard of Empires #1 – What starts off as one hell of a war comic turns into something totally different by the end and now I have no idea what to expect with the second issue.  All I can say is wow.  This is a comic that just knocks you on your ass in so many ways.

Story: 10 Art: 9.5 Overall: 9.75

Pick of the Week – Flashpoint tie-ins

Bookmark and Share

Again this week, I’d have to say, your best bet as far as quality is to pick up this week’s batch of Flashpoint tie-ins.  This week includes Flashpoint: Deadman and the Flying Graysons #1, Flashpoint: Grodd of War #1, Flashpoint: Legion of Doom #1, Flashpoint: Wonder Woman and The Furies #1.  There’s multiple books, but there’s few clunkers so far and those that were, were still entertaining.

  1. Flashpoint tie-ins – see above.
  2. G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes #2 – Tied into the “Search for Cobra Commander” storyline, the search for a new leader of a terrorist organization seems like a timely plot for today’s world.
  3. Green Hornet #16 – Consistently solid and entertaining, this is one of the best action hero stories you’re probably not reading.
  4. Alpha Flight #1 – The prelude comic had a lot of promise, hopefully the series delivers.
  5. Kirby: Genesis #1 – Like above, a lot of promise, and here’s where we find out if it delivers.

It’s a thick stack of books dominated by “X” comics, events and some comics making their debut.  Before you head to the shop to pick up your new releases, here’s what I think of this week’s batch of comics.

Monthly Comics

Alpha Flight #0.1 – In a reflection of the real world, the first prequel issue of the new Alpha Flight series starts with a Canadian election which is clearly more than it seems.  The issue as a whole is a decent read, and there’s a lot of potential but it doesn’t quite blow me away.  The art is a bit inconsistent and as a whole, if you have read Chaos War, you just have to accept these characters are returned from the dead.  Again, the series has potential, so I’ll be very interested in seeing where it goes from here.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Astonishing X-Men #38 – Two issues in two weeks and I can’t say either was really needed.  This issue decides to veer from last issue’s battle in Japan and instead sends a team into space to deal with the Brood.  The story is blah and there’s some dialogue that’s bizarre (why is Beast rambling about a “secret” team!?) and the art is very inconsistent.  This is one “X” series that’s not needed and definitely not astonishing.

Story: 6.75 Art: 6.75 Overall: 6.75

Avengers #13 – Generally I would have really liked how this story was told, but it’s yet another lead up to Fear Itself, which has been told numerous times before.  Instead of dropping the team right into the action and furthering the story, we instead get a retread that adds little other than a different perspective.

Story: 7 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7

Avengers Academy #14 – The junior team also feels like a junior comic.  There’s just something that’s missing from what should be a solid series.  Instead we get stories and characters that just don’t quite click, especially after such a promising start.

Story: 6.75 Art: 6.75 Overall: 6.75

DMZ #65 – I keep saying this series is some of the best political commentary out there.  This issue is a perfect example why.  What horrors and lies are ignored every day for this nation to continue?  How many of the founding qualities are trampled upon so that we can wake up the next day as a free nation?  In this simple story, all of that is addressed, but not at the same time.  Brian Wood’s work here deserves greater recognition, because through a comic book, he’s asking the questions too few are.

Story: 10 Art: 8 Overall: 9.5

Fables #105 – Just when the series hits a lull in storytelling (but an interesting concept) an issue like this comes before you and knocks it out of the park.  The majority of the story revolves in a father and son talk.  Simple in concept, damn near perfect in execution.  The series’ quality shines in this issue.

Story: 9.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 9

Generation Hope #7 – I really think it’s between this series and Astonishing as to which is the worst “X” series running right now.

Story: 6 Art: 6.75 Overall: 6.25

Heroes for Hire #7 – Fun, fun, fun, that’s what comics are all about and this series is a perfect example of that.  Spider-Man and Paladin are sort of working together as plot points from the first story arc come back.  The series might focus on B and C list characters, but the comic itself is an A.

Story: 9 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.75

Invincible Iron Man #504 – Fear Itself has been a disappointment so far, but Matt Fraction brings the quality for this tie in.  Iron Man has to deal with the Grey Gargoyle who has grabbed one of the hammers that have crashed down to Earth.  It’s a twisted story, and really enjoyable.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Namor: The First Mutant Annual #1 – It’s the final part in a three part story that finds Namor, Cyclops, Hope, Steve Rogers and Dr. Nemesis in the Negative Zone.  There’s some awesome parts here and some parts that made me as wtf.  Overall, the story is lacking and if I had noticed it was an annual, I would have skipped it.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Power Girl #24 – I’ve never read an issue of this series before, but when I heard it’d have to deal with a Muslim with meta-powers I felt I needed to check it out.  The story is just amazing with a great voice and perspective.  Are all the issues this good?

Story: 10 Art: 9 Overall: 9.5

Rocketeer Adventures #1 – I’ve never read a Rocketeer comic before (but have a trade sitting waiting to be read), and I have to say this first issue has a great pulp feeling to it.  The stories are entertaining and have an innocent throwback feel to them.  A great first issue, here’s hoping the rest take flight like this.

Story: 9 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.75

Thunderbolts #157 – The team continues their so-so battle but there’s need for the Thunderbolts team in another location at the same time.  Will the B team get called up?  It’ll be interesting to see how these teams meld or clash is the more likely.

Story: 7.5 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.5

Uncanny X-Force #10 – Archangel has fully taken over and a very interesting event forces him to completely lose his shit.  This is a pretty big moment as the team needs to head to the Age of Apocalypse to save their friend.  This series continues to be the best “X” book the market.  Plus as a bonus you get Iron Man 2.0 #3 to read too.

Story: 8.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.75

X-Factor #219 – David continues to play in his little corner of the “X” world and as many answers there are in this issue, there’s also a hell of a lot hinted at.  Overall a decent story, but I’m really intrigued to see what comes next.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.75

X-Men: Giant Size #1 – Well that was certainly an interesting issue.  It’s the first chapter of First to Last and mutants must deal with their place in the world and decide if their species will continue or fade out.  I’m not sure I’m a fan of the pseudo retcon, but the concept has me hooked.

Story: 8.25 Art: 7.75 Overall: 8

X-Men: Prelude to Schism #2 – Still not quite sure what the big danger is, but Cyclops turns to Magneto for advice as to how to move forward against this unseen threat.  It’s a decent story, but there’s been past stories of Magneto’s time in Germany that was much more effective and moving.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.75

X-23 #10 – Laura is hurting and Gambit has decided to call in reinforcements to try to help ground her.  This is the comic we should be getting, a killer attempting to reform.  Something that’d be a great companion for Daken which is the killer who embraces what he is.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.25

Pick of the Week – DMZ #65

It’s pretty apparent how much I enjoy Brian Wood‘s DMZ.  The series mixes action and heart with great commentary about modern day politics and world events.  The series is timely and reflective making you the reader think.  It’s never preachy, instead laying out an allegory for you to decide the lesson.  It’s sad to see this series wrapping up this year, but I know I’ll treasure each issue that much more as we barrel towards it’s end.

  1. DMZ #65 – See above.
  2. Heroes for Hire #7 – Comics should be entertaining and fun and this series epitomizes that.  It feels like a throwback to “B” movie exploitation movies, the ones I loved to watch when I was growing up.  Here’s hoping the series continues on and gets the audience it deserves.
  3. Zombie vs. Robots: Undercity #2 – Zombies and robots, do I really need to say more?
  4. Invincible Iron Man #504 – The fact this is a Fear Itself tie-in has me a bit worried, but if anyone can make this lackluster event work it’s Matt Fraction with this series.
  5. “X” Books – Oh, there’s a butt load this week.  Alpha Flight, Astonishing X-Men, Generation Hope, Uncanny X-Force, X-23, X-Factor, X-Men: Giant Size and X-Men: Prelude to Schism.  There’s a big build up this year when it comes to the “X” books that hopefully puts them square, front and center where they should be.
