Out of the last 19 weeks, this is the 7th time a Marvel movie has topped the box office. It was called a long shot, but Guardians of the Galaxy was number one this weekend with $94 million at the North American box office. That’s also a record debut for August, which is considered a slow month.

Overseas, the film earned $66.4 million in 42 territories like Russia, Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Globally, the film has earned an estimated $160.4 million, and there’s still some major markets top open such as China, Australia, France, and Spain. The film cost around $170 million to make, plus marketing.

Going in to the weekend the film was estimated to earn around $65 or $70 million. That was quickly raised after a strong Thursday debut. Its $11.2 million is a best for 2014 so far. Since 2008’s Iron Man, Marvel has earned $6.3 billion globally, making them the 800 lb gorilla in comics and movies.

The opening weekend crowd for Guardians was 56% male, 26% families and 59% adults, with moviegoers ages 26 to 34 making up the largest segment. 55% were over the age of 25. 46% of the audience was between 17 and 34.

With the under 18s and the 25-34 year olds the film earned a stellar “A+” CinemaScore, against excellent “A” scores from the other demographics and the film currently has 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
