Experience the Whimsical, Tragic, and Haunting Backstories of a Party of Misfits in Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins Omnibus Volume 1

Dark Horse Books and Critical Role present the Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins Omnibus Volume 1, a new softcover book that will collect Jester Lavorre, Caleb Widogast, Yasha Nydoorin, and Nott the Brave’s backstories together in one volume. These stories were created in consultation with the cast of Critical Role and were written by Jody Houser, Sam Maggs, and Cecil Castellucci, illustrated by Selina Espiritu, Hunter Severn Bonyun, and William Kirkby, colored by Cathy Le and Diana Sousa; and lettered by Ariana Maher. The first paperback omnibus volume will arrive in stores in Summer 2026 and will feature cover art by Robynn Frauhn.

While these stories have been previously released as individual hardcover volumes and the Dark Horse signature Library Edition oversized hardcover format, these new paperback Omnibus collections offer the content in a new format for those who prefer a paperback option.

Jester Lavorre’s unconventional upbringing full of mischief with the Traveler, Caleb’s troubled survival alongside Eadwulf and Astrid at the Soltryce Academy, Nott’s journey to escape her goblin captors and return to her family and herself, and Yasha’s emotional trauma after a loved one’s unfair death are all chronicled in this omnibus edition of Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins. Delve deep into each character’s past and witness what led these unlikely friends to form the party known as the Mighty Nein.

The space-western podcast Midst comes to comics

Dark Horse Comics, in partnership with Third Person and Critical Role, have revealed Midst, a new comic series spinning off from the popular space-Western podcast Midst. Midst comics will be perfect for new and continuing fans alike, as the series explores the cosmos and its characters. The first issue, Midst: Address Unknown, will be written by Colin Lorimer with art by Alejandro Aragón, colors by Chris O’Halloran, letters by Jim Campbell, and cover art by William Kirkby. Each oversized issue will tell a new story with a new creative team. The first issue will arrive in August 2024 and spans 56 pages.

Caught between the Un and the Fold sits the islet of Midst…

When their ramshackle postal ship crashes on a mysterious new landmass, siblings Rowan and Ogden Shearwater have to make the best of it. Adventurous Ogden convinces reluctant Rowan to make a fresh start in the strange new islet that sits between the bright Un and the dark Fold. But Midst holds dangers that will challenge Ogden and Rowan’s family bonds as well as their will to survive.

“Midst has always aspired to be more than just a podcast, so it is incredibly exciting to announce our collaboration with Dark Horse to tell more Midst stories in new ways,” said Third Person. “This collection introduces new aspects of the Midst storyverse, spanning the past, present, and future of the show’s timeline, revealing new heights and depths throughout the cosmos. This is a dream come true for us, and we can’t wait to share these new tales.”

Midst is also perfect for fans of Firefly and Critical Role.

Midst: Address Unknown (1 of 3) arrives in comic shops on August 14, 2024. It is now available to preorder at your local comic shop for $7.99.

Critical Role’s Nott the Brave’s Origins Revealed!

The Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins line from Dark Horse Comics and Critical Role continues to grow with Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins – Nott the Brave. Writer Sam Maggs is joined by Critical Role Game Master Matthew Mercer and cast member Sam Riegel, with art by William Kirkby, colors by Mildred Louis, and letters by Critical Role comics alum Ariana Maher for a heartbreaking tale about a halfling’s end and a goblin’s beginning.

Veth Brenatto doesn’t have an exciting life, but she likes it that way. Unlike her childhood, it’s safe. Predictable. And her husband and son love her as fiercely as she loves them. But Veth’s cozy existence is turned on its head when she and her family are captured by raiders. In order to save them, Veth will commit an atrocity that will sever her from all that she loves––maybe forever––and lead her to become Nott the Brave of the Mighty Nein.

The Secret Origins of Critical Role’s Yasha Nydoorin

The partnership between Dark Horse Comics and Critical Role continues to expand with the latest title from the previously announced Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins line: Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins – Yasha Nydoorin. The New York Times bestselling author Cecil Castellucci is joined by artist William Kirkby, colorist Diana Sousa, and Critical Role letterer alum Ariana Maher, working with Game Master Matthew Mercer and cast member Ashley Johnson to shed some light on the tumultuous past of the Mighty Nein’s Yasha Nydoorin.

For Yasha, there has always been a storm on the horizon.

Maybe it formed with her adoption by the Dolorov people in the harsh lands of Xhorhas. Or perhaps when she fell for her first love, Zuala. Or still later, when grief and madness drove her from her village and out into––somewhere else. Maybe, on the other hand, Yasha IS the storm.
