Review: Like Father, Like Daughter #1

Like Father, Like Daughter #1

It’s always interesting to see how celebrities deal with their personal lives in the public spotlight. Their love lives are what tabloids are built on, in fact, various publications have used bad images to start rumors. What’s scary is how often they’re ahead of the regular news on stories. The inklings of rumors tend to stoke the fire of truth, one that is ablaze before one knows it.

I always wondered how this would affect a fictional world where superheroes are real. Movies like The Incredibles and Watchmen tend to use those very circumstances with very real consequences. I always wondered if these characters were real, would their public personas, like politicians be a complete fabrication, and their true selves, less than. In the debut issue of Like Father, Like Daughter, we find one hero who seems to be perfect, while the daughter he abandons, knows better.

We meet Invulnerable, a hero who just so happens to stop a bank robbery in progress. He convinces the criminals to give up or find out just how powerful he is. We also meet Casey, his daughter, who hates him and who unbeknownst has inherited his powers. It’s a heavy weight that she doesn’t know quite how to handle. As she comes to grips with this new knowledge, she finally lets her best friend know who her father is. She embraces her and puts her abilities to the test, often to hilarious results, as she hasn’t gotten quite competent at it yet. By issue’s end, we find out Invulnerable is not quite as perfect as he sets out be.

Overall, Like Father, Like Daughter #1 is an excellent debut that adds a different dynamic to the superhero comic book genre. The story by Kathryn Calumio is funny, clever, and touching. The art by the creative team is simply competent. Altogether, a story that is both a love letter to the superhero genre and tabloid magazines.
