The Nun II repeats in first as Expend4bles stumbles to second

The Nun II

It was a repeat weekend at the top of the box office as The Nun II took first place with an estimated $8.4 million. There’s a chance that result might change as final numbers are adjusted. The movie has now grossed $69.2 million domestically. Internationally, the movie grossed $32.7 million over the week to lift it to $135 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $204.2 million.

Expend4bles debuted in second place with $8.3 million, a series low. Not international returns have been announced. The first film debuted in 2010 with $34.8 million, the second in 2012 with $28.6 million, and third debuted in 2014 with $15.9 million.

A Haunting in Venice slipped one spot to third place with $6.3 million to bring its domestic total to $25.4 million. Over the week, it grossed $23.5 million to bring its international total to $46.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has earned $71.6 million.

The Equalizer 3 came in fourth with an estimated $4.7 million to bring its domestic total to $81.3 million. Over the week, it grossed $8.7 million to bring its international total to $67.4 million and $148.7 million worldwide.

Barbie launched on digital services but still held on to fifth place with $3.2 million to bring its domestic total to $630.5 million. Over the week, it added $6.4 million internationally to bring that total to $797 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.427 billion. It’s the top film of 2023 domestically and internationally. The movie is currently #11 in all-time domestic gross and there’s a chance it has enough left to gross the $23 million it needs to pass Jurassic World. Domestically, the movie ranks. Worldwide, the film remains at #14 behind Frozen II. It’d need about $26 million to pass it.

In comic film news…

Blue Beetle came in at #9 with $1.8 million. Domestically, ti has now grossed $69.8 million. Internationally it added $500,000 to the gross bringing that to $53.1 million. The movie has grossed $122.9 million worldwide.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem came in at #11 grossing $1.6 million domestically bringing its domestic total to $116.3 million. Internationally, the movie added $3.3 million where it has now grossed $56.4 million. Worldwide, the movie has brought in $172.7 million.

Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine grossed about $1,600 over the week domestically to bring its total to $666,400. There’s now some international gross reported of $6,159. Worldwide, the film has grossed $672,559.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse looks like it remained steady domestically at $381.3 million. Internationally, the film remained steady at $308.5 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $689.8 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 61 films earning $51,684,406 from 35,167 theaters. That’s about a dip of a quarter from last weekend’s $61,792,643 from 34,745 theaters and 53 films. The average earning was $1,469.69 this past weekend, less than the previous weekend’s $1,778.46.

It’s spooky season and horror films seem to be doing well at the box office. The Nun II was in first place this past weekend, a repeat, not something that’s common with horror films. It dropped just 54.8% from the previous weekend grossing an estimated $14.53 million to bring its domestic gross to $56.5 million. Over the week, it grossed $49.6 million internationally to bring that to $102.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $158.8 million after two weeks. The original grossed $365.6 million worldwide in 2018.

In second place was A Haunting in Venice which opened with $14.3 million domestically and $22.7 million internationally for $37.2 million worldwide.

The Equalizer 3 slipped one spot to come in third with an estimated $7.2 million. Its gross after three weeks is about $73.7 million. Internationally, the movie grossed $12.9 million over the week to bring that to $58.7 million an $132.4 million worldwide.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 dropped one spot to fourth with an estimated $4.7 million at the domestic box office. The film has grossed just $18.6 million after two weeks showing this franchise is pretty much dead. Internationally it’s not doing much better with just $2.6 million over the week to bring that total to $5.3 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed just $23.9 million.

Barbie held steady in fifth place with just under $4 million domestically to bring its total to $626.1 million. Over the week, it grossed $8.4 million internationally to bring that to $790.6 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.417 billion. It’s the top grossing film for 2023 by far domestically and worldwide. The movie is currently #14 in all-time worldwide gross and there’s a good chance it has enough left to gross the $37 million it needs to pass Frozen II. Domestically, it’s #11 having passed The Avengers though it’ll need $27 million to pass Jurassic World. There’s a good chance that might happen before its run is over.

Blue Beetle came in at #7 with $2.5 million. Domestically, ti has now grossed $67.3 million. Internationally it added $2.3 million to the gross bringing that to $52.6 million. The movie has grossed $119.9 million worldwide.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem came in at #10 grossing $2 million domestically bringing its domestic total to $114.1 million. Internationally, the movie added $3.1 million where it has now grossed $53.1 million. Worldwide, the movie has brought in $167.2 million.

Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine grossed about $4,150 over the week domestically to bring its total to $664,841. There’s now some international gross reported of $6,159. Worldwide, the film has grossed $671,000.

New films pack the weekend box office top 5

It was a top five filled with new releases at the weekend box office. The Nun II dominated the weekend with over 2.5 times the gross of the second place film. The movie brought in $32.6 million domestically and $52.7 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $85.3 million. The first film opened in 2018 with $53.8 million domestically and went on to gross $365.6 million worldwide.

The Equalizer 3 took second place with 65% drop from the previous weekend and first. It grossed $12.1 million to bring its domestic total to $61.9 million. Internationally, it grossed $19.7 million over the week to bring that total to $45.8 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $107.7 million after two weeks.

In third place was My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 which opened with $10 million domestically. Internationally it opened with $2.7 million for a worldwide debut of $12.7 million. The first film opened with just $597,362 in 2002 and went on to gross $368.7 million. The sequel opened with $17.9 million in 2016 and went on to earn $90.6 million.

Jawan opened with $6.2 million showing in just 813 theaters. It’s grossed $7.6 million so far with no international total reported.

Barbie wrapped the top five with $5.9 million to bring its domestic total to $620.5 million. Internationally, it grossed $10.7 million over the week to bring that to $782.2 million. The movie has now grossed $1.403 billion. It’s the top grossing domestic film for 2023 by far and the same worldwide in 2023 as well by a decent amount. The movie is currently #15 in all-time worldwide gross and will likely move up at least one spot before it’s run is over. Domestically, it’s #12 and also likely to move up at least one more spot before it’s done.

The Equalizer 3 was easily the of the box office beating the next film by over 3x the gross. The Equalizer 3 grossed $34.5 million domestically, with an estimated $42 million over the long weekend and $26.1 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $68.1 million. The first film opened with $55 million in 2014 to go on and earn $192.3 million worldwide and the second opened with $62 million in 2018 and went on to earn $190.4 million worldwide.

Barbie continues its amazing run adding $10.6 million to its total over the weekend to bring its domestic total to $609.5 million. Over the week it grossed $26 million internationally to bring that total to $771.5 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.381 billion. It’s the top grossing domestic film for 2023 by far and now officially the same worldwide in 2023 as well by a decent amount. There’s still 3 months to go, but this is looking like the year of Barbie and how pink saved the movie theater.

Blue Beetle held steady in third with $7.3 million bringing its domestic total to $56.6 million. Internationally it added $9.8 million to the gross bringing that to $45.3 million. The movie has now crossed the $100 million mark with $101.9 million worldwide.

Gran Turismo crashed in its second week with a 62.4% drop down to $6.6 million where it has now grossed $30.6 million domestically. Internationally, the film added $13.8 million to bring that to $50.3 million and $80.9 million worldwide.

Oppenheimer rounded out the top five with $5.5 million to bring its domestic total to $210.3 million. It brought in an impressive $65.5 million internationally over the week to bring that to $542.7 million and just under $853 million worldwide.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem slipped one spot to sixth grossing $4.8 million domestically bringing its domestic total to just under $108 million. Internationally, the movie added $7.9 million where it has now grossed $44.9 million. Worldwide, the movie has brought in $152.9 million.

Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine grossed about $4,500 over the week domestically to bring its total to $657,810.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse added about $200,000 domestically and is now at $381.2 million. Internationally, the film gained about $1.2 million to bring that to $308.1 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $689.3 million.
