Venom: Let There Be Carnage was a beast of a film opening with $90.1 million, the best domestic debut for a film this year. The opening shows good things for the franchise and the original film was not a fluke. That movie opened with $80.3 million in 2018 and went on to gross $856.1 million. That has the sequel out-performing the original even during the pandemic, an impressive debut. It should also have Sony excited that they’re heading in the right direction for their Spider-Man franchises and bodes well for the next film to release.

The film also debuted internationally where it grossed $13.8 million for a total of $103.9 million worldwide. We’ll see how the film holds up next weekend when it faces some competition.

Internationally, the winner for the weekend was No Time to Die, the latest James Bond film. Opening domestically next weekend, the film earned $119.1 million in its first weekend at the international box office.

The film added an estimated $35.8 million to its domestic total which now stands at $145.6 million. That weekend total was a drop of 52.5% which is a little bit better than average for a comic book film which can easily drop 55% to 60% in their second weekend.

Internationally, the film rocked, with an almost similar amount as the previous weekend’s gross during the week. It earned about $55.8 million bringing the international gross to $112 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $257.6 million.

In second place was Free Guy which moved up a slot from the previous weekend. The film added an estimated $5.8 million to its domestic total which now stands at $101.8 million. The film has continued to do well overseas adding about $27.3 million over the week to bring that total to $174.7 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $276.5 million.

Rounding out the top five was Jungle Cruise which has held in the top five for some time now. The film added an impressive $2.5 million after seven weeks to bring its domestic total to $109.9 million. The international gross stands at $86.9 million. Worldwide the film has grossed $196.8 million.

In comic films…

Black Widow came in at #12 with an estimated $282,000. Domestically, the film has grossed $183.1 million. The international total has held steady at $189.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $372.7 million.

Old was #13 with an estimated $244,585. Domestically, the film has grossed $47.7 million. Internationally, the film added about $1,900,000 to its total over the week to bring that to $39.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $87.7 million.

The Suicide Squad didn’t show up on the weekend chart but the film looks like it made about $500,000 over the week. Domestically, the film has grossed $54.9 million. The film added $1.9 million to its international gross over the week to bring that to $110 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $164.9 million.

Initial numbers have 53 films earning $61,321,811 from 31,299 theaters. That’s around $50 million less than last weekend’s 45 films which earned $110,438,478 from 30,852 theaters. The average earning was $1,959.23 this past weekend, about 50% less than the previous weekend’s $3,579.62.
