Season of the Bruja Vol. 1

(W) Aaron Durán, (I) Sara Soler

Season of the Bruja follows a young woman as she comes into her magical abilities and faces reemergent threats from the past.

From a young age, Althalia knew she would someday be the last of her kind—a bruja, tasked with keeping the power and stories of the ancient ways from fading fully into history. Never alone, Althalia works in a paranormal museum with her friends, a real-life Chupacabra, and a were-coyote, while living with and caring for her beloved abuela. Through these powerful connections, her skills and knowledge grow.

But the prejudice her people have always faced continues, and after a seemingly random encounter with a priest, Althalia feels the weight of hundreds of years of religious oppression coming down upon her and her abuela. She must realize her destiny and grow into it quickly if she is to prevent the church from achieving its ultimate goal—destroying the last bruja.

Althalia Cabrera is desperately trying to do the right thing, but exactly what the right thing is has never been murkier to the young bruja. She can either accept the help of her indigenous religion’s ancient death gods and save the life of her beloved abuela, or face the loneliness of being the last of her kind. Shattered by grief and surging with her growing power, Althalia is about to show the underworld what can happen when you threaten the wrong witch’s sweet little abuela.

Season of the Bruja #2

(W) Aaron Durán (A) Sara Soler, Jaime Martinez

After a disturbing confrontation with an aggressive priest, Althalia Cabrera’s abuela Isadora has collapsed, and Althalia is arrested while trying to protect her. Now the young bruja—for the first time without Isadora’s guidance—must attempt to summon both her innate strength and her years of training in the craft to try to save her family’s beloved matriarch. But it may already be too late to take down the dark forces that seek to strip both of the Cabrera brujas of their power.

Season of the Bruja #1

Althalia Cabrera might seem like any other witchy Portland hipster whiling away her days behind the counter of a freaky occult museum, but there’s more to her whole deal than a trendy pursuit of the craft. Althalia is a bruja by blood—the youngest in a long line of powerful magic users from a long-ago culture indigenous to Mexico. In her twenty years, Althalia has studied with her loving abuela by her side, supporting and mentoring her use of the family magic, and protecting her from the darkest parts of their practice’s history. But just as Althalia’s inner light and power begins to shine, the darkness of the past finds its way into her world and strikes a tragic blow, testing Althalia in ways she might not be prepared enough to survive.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Call Me Nathan

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Batman: Beyond the White Knight #1 (DC Comics) – We’re intrigued where Sean Gordon Murphy takes his sandbox of the DC world in this latest series and volume.

Call Me Nathan (SelfMadeHero) – Based on the true story of one person’s transition.

Cities of Magick #1 (Scout Comics) – It’s a decade-old war between to powerful magick clans!

DC vs. Vampires #6 (DC Comics) – Who’s the Vampire King? We find out!

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Saturday Morning Adventures #2 (IDW Publishing) – The first issue perfectly capture the feel of the cartoon series in every aspect.

Immortal X-Men #1 (Marvel) – The next phase of the world of the X-Men really kicks off here courtesy of Kieron Gillen and Lucas Werneck. We’re intrigued what this duo can bring and how things shift.

The Killer: Affairs of State #2 (BOOM! Studios/Archaia) – The first issue gave us a new status-quo for The Killer. Now working for French Intelligence, the series seems like it’s focused on corrupt government officials and delivers the same complex stories we’ve come to enjoy.

My Date with Monsters #5 (AfterShock) – The series has been a great mix of horror, comedy, and rom com and we’re intrigued and excited to see how it all wraps up.

Ranger Stranger #2 (Scout Comics) – The first issue was short comics that hand us laughing out loud and crying from laughing so hard. Here’s hoping the second delivers a similar amount of insanity.

Season of the Bruja #1 (Oni Press) – A story of magic that looks to have a solid amount of real world culture and history mixed in based on the writer’s own family’s traditions.

Lantinx Series Season of the Bruja Explores Heritage, Culture, and Magic in 2022

Oni Press has announce the forthcoming Latinx single-issue series, Season of the Bruja, written by Aaron Durán, illustrated and colored by up-and-coming artist Sara Soler, and with lettering by AndWorld Design’s Jaime Martinez, coming Spring 2022. Season of the Bruja is Durán’s debut project in which he adapted much of the lore for the series from his own family’s traditions.

Althalia Cabrera might seem like any other witchy Portland hipster whiling away her days behind the counter of a freaky occult museum, but there’s more to her whole deal than a trendy pursuit of the craft. Inspired by Aaron Durán’s lifelong love for his Mexican family’s cultural traditions and his devoted fandom of horror stories, comics, and Buffy the Vampire SlayerSeason of the Bruja is a five-part series and will be available where comics are sold March 16, 2022.
