Kung Fu Panda 3 Debuts on Top, Crushing the Competition
Kung Fu Panda 3 debuted in first place this weekend earning an estimated $41 million. That’s the largest January opening of all-time. Other debuts this weekend didn’t fair nearly as well. The Finest Hours came in fourth place earning an estimated $10.3 million, Fifty Shades of Black opened in ninth and earned $6.2 million, Jane Got a Gun opened in 17th with $803,000, 2016 Oscar Nominated Short Films earned $505,000 for 21st, and Rabin, the Last Day was 40 with $7,854.
Overall, the box office was up compared to last year with holdover films not dropping much from the previous week. In second place was The Revenant which earned an estimated $12.4 million and in third was Star Wars: The Force Awakens which added $10.78 million to its total. Rounding out the top five was Ride Along 2 which earned an estimated $8.3 million.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to rake in the cash with it crossing the $900 million mark domestically in the next week as well as crossing the $2 billion mark globally in that same time frame. The film is sitting in third in worldwide earnings (not adjusted) and is about $200 million from moving in to second and $800 million from toppling Avatar from the top spot. There’s a good chance it’ll move in to second, but first is quite a march with some tougher competition coming down the road.

The Revenant topped the box office this past weekend earning an estimated $16 million. The previous week it came in second. Star Wars: The Force Awakens moved up to second earning an estimated $14.257 million, and last week’s champ Ride Along 2 dropped to third earning an estimated $12.96 million. Three new entries filled fourth, fifth, and sixth place. Dirty Grandpa debuted with $11.525 million, The Boy earned $11.26 million, and The 5th Wave was sixth with $10.7 million.
It’d eventually happen, and this was the first weekend it was most likely to happen. Ride Along 2 was the top of the box office earning an estimated $34 million. That wasn’t close to the first film’s $41.5 million during the same weekend two years ago for the first film in the series. It was still enough to be in first place.
