Otakon 2014: Welcome Peter S. Beagle to His Sixth Otakon

Peter_S_BeagleOtakon welcomes back author and screenwriter Peter S. Beagle for his sixth Otakon appearance. Beagle, joining the guest roster for Otakon 2014, is best known for his classic book, The Last Unicorn, which was later adapted into a much-loved animated feature film. He appears courtesy of Conlan Press, who promises a major announcement at this year’s Otakon.

Beagle was born in 1939 and raised in the Bronx, where he grew up surrounded by the arts and education: both his parents were teachers, three of his uncles were gallery painters, and his immigrant grandfather was a respected writer, in Hebrew, of Jewish fiction and folktales. As a child, Beagle used to sit by himself in the stairwell of his apartment building, making up stories.

Today, thanks to classics like The Last Unicorn, A Fine and Private Place, and Two Hearts, he is a living fantasy icon. Beagle has written many teleplays and screenplays, including the animated versions of The Lord of the Rings and The Last Unicorn, plus the fan-favorite “Sarek” episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. His nonfiction book, I See By My Outfit, is considered a classic of American travel writing, and he is also a gifted poet, lyricist, and singer/songwriter. He currently makes his home in Oakland, California.

His most famous work, The Last Unicorn, was animated by studio Topcraft. Many of the animators would join Hayao MIyazaki to form Studio Ghibli. In 2011 The Last Unicorn also became a bestselling graphic novel from IDW Publishing.

Otakon 2014 will be held August 8-10 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD.

New Adaptation of A Fine & Private Place Coming in September

New Adaptation of A Fine & Private Place Coming in September

IDW partners with author Peter S. Beagle to release all-new comic book series

[Fine & Private Place Cover]San Diego, CA (June 14, 2012) – IDW Publishing is proud to announce another comic adaptation of a classic work by the beloved author Peter S. Beagle. Based on Beagle’s first fantasy novel, A FINE & PRIVATE PLACE kicks off in September, with scripts by Peter B. Gillis (The Last Unicorn), interior art by Eduardo Francisco (Flashpoint: World of Flashpoint), and covers by Jenny Frison (Servant of the Bones).

“It’s the kind of book that rarely gets the comics treatment: subtle, poignant, alternately cynically wry and utterly romantic, simultaneously despairing and hopeful—the sort of book that stays with you,” says Gillis. “This is going to be a great endeavor and, if I’m up to it, will make for great comics.”

Originally published in 1960, A Fine & Private Place tells the story of Jonathan Rebeck, an ex-pharmacist who has been living in a cemetery in the Bronx for the past 19 years. Cared for by a talking raven, Mr. Rebeck also has the strange ability to talk to ghosts. The first issue of A FINE & PRIVATE PLACE launches into Mr. Rebeck’s peculiar world and introduces readers to the unique characters of the story, including the talking raven, two unusual spirits, and an all-too-living widow named Mrs. Klapper.

“First books are always special to writers,” says Beagle, “and this one is particularly important to me because it was born directly from a childhood spent just a block away from the cemetery that was the model for the novel’s setting. I’m thrilled to see my characters and their tale come to life in this new form.”

IDW’s adaptation of A Fine & Private Place will feature the same quirky humor, rich characterization, and deeply moving emotion that marks all of Beagle’s work. Gillis has previously adapted Beagle’s The Last Unicorn with great success and will continue to prevail with this new adaptation. Additionally, artists Francisco and Frison will bring this book about memory, love, and the pain of loss to vivid life.

A FINE & PRIVATE PLACE #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in September 2012. Diamond order code JUL12 0299.
