Barbie repeats in first with an impressive second week

Is it the summer of Barbie? Could it be the year of Barbie? The film had an amazing second weekend at the box office. It dropped just 42.6% from its debut weekend scoring an impressive $93 million domestically. That puts it at $351.4 million after just two weeks. Internationally, the film grossed $241.1 million over the week to bring that to $423.1 million. That means worldwide, the film has grossed $774.5 million. It is likely to cross $1 billion before things are done making it only the second film released this year to do so.

Oppenheimer also had a solid second weekend grossing $46.2 million to bring its domestic total to $174.1 million. Over the week it grossed $132.6 million internationally to bring that total to $226.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $400.4 million after two weeks.

Haunted Mansion debuted in an anemic third with $24.2 million domestically nad $9.1 million internationally. Worldwide the movie has grossed $33.3 million and is another underperforming Disney film this year, a studio that has been struggling for hits lately.

The QAnon conspiracy supported film Sound of Freedom slipped to fourth place with $12.4 million domestically to bring its total to just under $149 million. The movie has had a lot of controversy from its content to a “pay it forward” program and bulk purchasing of tickets to inflate its total.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One rounded out the top five with $10.7 million to bring its domestic total to $139.2 million. Over the week it grossed $57. 2 million to bring its international total to $448.5 million.

In comic film news…

The Flash added just $500,000 domestically to bring its gross to $107.7 million. Internationally, the film remained at $160.4 million for a worldwide total of $268.1 million.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse grossed $1.4 million to bring its domestic total to $378.8 million. Internationally, the film grossed $3.4 million over the week to bring that total to $303.6 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $675.4 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 grossed $33,000. It has now grossed $358.9 million domestically. Over the week, it grossed $1.1 million internationally where it has now earned $485.9 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $844.9 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 50 films earning $213,620,093 from 31,042 theaters. That’s a dip, but still solid, from last weekend’s $311,266,386 from 30,563 theaters and 50 films. But, it’s still a solid weekend box office. The average earning was $6,881.65 this past weekend, about 2/3 from the previous weekend’s $10,184.42.

It was Barbie vs. Oppenheimer with one clear winner at the end… Barbie! The film opened with $162 million, the biggest opening of 2023 and the highest of any movie directed by a woman. The film also grossed $182 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $344 million.

Oppenheimer exceeded expectations coming in second place with $80.5 million domestically. It also grossed $93.7 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $174.2 million.

The Q-Anon propaganda Sound of Freedom came in third place with $20.1 million to bring its domestic total to $124.7 million. There’s no international gross.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One went from first to fourth adding $19.5 million to its total. Domestically, it has grossed $118.8 million. Over the week, it added $97.1 million to its international total where it has now grossed $252.1 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $370.9 million.

Rounding out the top five was Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny with $6.7 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $159 million. Internationally, it added $19 million over the week to bring that to $176 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $335 million.

In comic film news…

The Flash added just $400,000 domestically to bring its gross to $107.2 million. Internationally, the film added $3.6 million over the week to lift that to $160.4 million for a worldwide total of $267.6 million.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse grossed $2.8 million to bring its domestic total to $375.2 million. Internationally, the film grossed $5.5 million over the week to bring that total to $300.2 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $675.4 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 grossed $100,000. It has now grossed $358.8 million domestically. Over the week, it grossed $900,000 internationally where it has now earned $484.8 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $843.6 million.

Not surprisingly, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One took first place at the weekend box office. The film grossed $56.2 million domestically where it has grossed a little over $80 million total. The film also grossed $155 million internationally for a worldwide debut of a little over $235 million.

In second place was the Q-Anon propaganda Sound of Freedom which improved to gross $27 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $85.5 million after about two weeks at the box office.

Insidious: The Red Door dropped from last week’s first place to come in third with $13 million to deliver a domestic total gross of $58.1 million. Over the week, the film added $33.1 million internationally for a total of $64.5 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $122.6 million.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny continued its stumble with $12 million to come in fourth after 3 weeks. The film has grossed $145.4 million domestically. Over the week, the movie grossed $30.3 million to bring its international total to $157 million even. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $302.4 million.

Elemental wrapped up the top five with $8.7 million to bring its domestic total to $125.3 million. Over the week, it grossed $43.7 million internationally to bring that total to $186.4 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $311.7 million.

The Flash added just $720,000 domestically to bring its gross to $106.8 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $156.8 million for a worldwide total of $263.6 million.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse slipped out of the top five to sixth with $6.1 million to bring its domestic total to $368.8 million. Internationally, the film grossed $10.1 million over the week to bring that total to $294.7 million. Worldwide, the move has grossed $663.5 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 grossed $480,000. It has now grossed $358.5 million domestically. Over the week, it grossed $1.6 million internationally where it has now earned $483.9 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $842.4 million.
