Cloak and Dagger are back together as a team of super police consultants! However, Tandy and Tyrone are another story, as each find themselves embroiled in new relationships… Will they finally be able to move on or will the tension of watching their ex with someone new be enough to break their newly reformed team apart? The latest Marvel Digital Comics is out bringing together Cloak and Dagger for a new adventure. Their previous was just ok to me but this debut issue far exceeds expectations set by that first outing. Writer Dennis Hopeless again handles the writing duties but Cloak and Dagger: Negative Exposure #1 feels so much different than the previous volume.
The big change is the team of Cloak and Dagger are back together as opposed to arguing all the time in a volume that was rather negative. Here, they’re doing what they do best as a team in a new dynamic. No longer vigilantes, they now both work with the local police to handle cases of the superhero variety. It’s a solid concept that works well for the characters and shows some growth from their runaway pasts.
The story itself is solid in this double dose issue having them take on a few baddies setting up whatever the big mystery is to come. It also adds some depth to Cloak’s power that was hinted at in the previous volume. The “dark” is actually explored and done so in a way I can’t remember seeing in previous comics featuring these two.
The art is improved too with Francesco Manna taking over duties. He’s joined by Giada Marchisio on color and lettering by Travis Lanham. The three together deliver a solid art style that’s consistent and tight. There’s some fantastic page layouts and flow of the story at times really pushing the visuals in a positive way. Manna and the team clearly take advantage of the characters and what they can do and with Hopeless deliver a combination of story and art that really works.
After the somewhat letdown of the first digital volume, this start is a breath of fresh air in both story and look. This feels like a much higher tiered series and one I want to see where it goes. It might be digital but this is a comic series to definitely check out now and especially when it eventually makes it to print as a trade.
