JY Announces Svetlana Chmakova’s The Weirn Books, Vol. 2: The Ghost and the Stolen Dragon

JY, the middle grade imprint of Yen Press, has announced The Weirn Books, Vol. 2: The Ghost and the Stolen Dragon, the continuing volume of Svetlana Chmakova’s tale of a spooky middle school filled with weirns, werewolves, and more.

Svetlana Chmakova is one of the most beloved creators in the world of middle grade graphic novels due to her Berrybrook Middle School series, which includes AwkwardBrave, and Crush. Prior to her rise in the middle grade category, Svetlana Chmakova was known for her young adult graphic novel series Nightschool, a supernatural tale published by Yen Press over a decade ago.

Taking elements from the original volumes of Nightschool, she started a new middle grade series with the graphic novel The Weirn Books, Vol. 1: Be Wary of the Silent Woods, released in June 2020. The many passionate fans of The Weirn Books have been eagerly anticipating the release of this new volume that takes them back to Svetlana Chmakova’s unique fantasy world.

After her terrible adventures in the silent woods, Na’ya’s world seems to have returned to normal…that is, except for the nightmares that keep haunting her. What she needs is the power to protect everyone in case the evil scientist returns, and she has the perfect solution—she’ll turn into a dragon, once and for all! With help from Ailis and Jasper, everything seems to be going according to plan. But what’s that dark shadow slithering around the spell-casting range…?

Acclaimed author of Awkward, Svetlana Chmakova, returns to the fantastical night realm, full of magic, adventure, and…dragons!

The Weirn Books, Vol. 2: The Ghost and the Stolen Dragon is scheduled to release in October 2024 in trade paperback, hardcover, and digital.

Amy’s Big Brother is cute and definitely has moments many have experienced

I’m not her babysitter… Having a little sister isn’t easy – she takes my soda, follows me around, and wants to tag along with me and my friends. Worse, she always gets her way with our parents! Sometimes I wonder if I was adopted just to look after her. (I know, it doesn’t make sense.) Going to middle school means at least she can’t bother me there. I’ll have plenty of time to practice to become MVP of the basketball team and maybe even…get a girlfriend! I finally managed to ask Hannah out on a date. Now how do I make sure Amy doesn’t follow me and ruin the day?!

Creator BonHyung Jeong (Bon) studied cartooning at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Kyle’s Little Sister was her debut graphic novel, and she’s excited to bring fans this highly anticipated continuation just in time for the holidays. She hopes to make connections with others through relatable stories.

“Similar to Kyle’s Little Sister, I covered a variety of relationships in Amy’s Big Brother,” says BonHyung Jeong. “Of course, there’s the conflict between siblings, but this time it’s from the perspective of the first child. I’ve also gone deeper into the theme of romance with a couple of my young characters going through their first love! I hope I represented these experiences well in Amy’s Big Brother and that readers find connection with my story.”

Amy’s Big Brother is scheduled to release in December 2023.

Meet Kyle’s Little Sister! A new middle-grade graphic novel from JY!

Scheduled for release in June from Yen PressJY imprint Kyle’s Little Sister is the debut graphic novel from BonHyung Jeong.

My name is Grace, not “Kyle’s little sister!”

Having a good-looking, friendly, outgoing older brother sucks—especially when you’re the total opposite, someone who likes staying home and playing video games. Your parents like him better (even if they deny it!), and everyone calls you “Kyle’s little sister” while looking disappointed that you’re not more like him. I was really hoping I’d get to go to a different middle school, but no such luck. At least I have my friends…until he finds a way to ruin that, too…! Argh! What do I have to do to get out of his shadow?!
