DC Studios announces 10 new film and television projects including Amanda Waller, Superman, Booster Gold, and more!

DC Studios Co-Chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced plans for their first 10 film and television projects under the new DC banner they lead across film, television, and animation. Gunn and Safran are designing and implementing a long-term interconnected story for the iconic franchise and characters, and today shared details on “Chapter 1” focused on “Gods and Monsters” with five new films and five television series for HBO Max already in development.

The plan is for a connected universe with all ten projects set within the same shared DC Universe. Characters will crossover between projects.

The reveal has some surprising announcements but shows a very wide variety of characters and projects. Live action, animation, television, and film, some of the projects are high profile characters and some are sure to be the stars of tomorrow.

What also stands out from the announcement is Gunn’s promotion of other projects that will be outside of this connected world and will be labeled as “Elseworlds”. Examples are The Batman and the upcoming Joker sequel.

Film Projects:

  • Superman: Legacy – written by Gunn, the film will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, and focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.
  • The Authority – DC’s WildStorm characters will join the DCU as members of The Authority take matters into their own hands to do what they believe is right
  • The Brave and the Bold – the DCU will introduce its Batman and Robin in this unusual father-son story inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic series
  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – this science fiction adventure, which will be based on Tom King’s amazing, award-winning recent comics stories, presents a Supergirl viewers are not used to seeing
  • Swamp Thing – the film will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing

Television projects for HBO Max:

  • Creature Commandos – a seven-episode animated show in which Amanda Waller creates a black ops team out of monstrous prisoners; Gunn wrote all the episodes of the first season
  • Waller – starring Viola Davis, this series features Team Peacemaker and will be written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Supernatural)
  • Booster Gold – Booster Gold uses basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in present day
  • Lanterns – this enormous TV event series follows intergalactic cops John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they uncover a dark mystery 
  • Paradise Lost ­– set in Themyscira, home of the Amazons and birthplace of Wonder Woman, this drama focuses on the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women

Dead Boy Detectives Gets its Main Cast

The main cast for Dead Boy Detectives has been revealed. The comic series will be coming to HBO Max with a pilot in the works. George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, and Kassius Nelson will star in the lead roles.

Created by Neil Gaiman, the Dead Boy Detectives was released as a comic series from DC Comics. The Dead Boy Detectives are Charles Rowland (Revri) and Edwin Paine (Rexstrew) who decide to not go to the afterlife and instead stay on Earth and investigate supernatural crimes. They’re joined by Crystal Palace (Nelson) who is a psychic medium. Dead Boy Detectives was published by DC’s Vertigo imprint with a story by Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham and art by Mark Buckingham and Gary Erskine.

Reports have even more cast including Alexander Calvert as Thomas The Cat King; Briana Cuoco as Jenny; Jenn Lyon as Esther; Yuyu Kitamura as Niko; and Ruth Connell who will play Night Nurse.

Steve Yockey is writing and executive producing the pilot. Jeremy Carver, Greg Berlanti, Sara Schechter, and David Madden are executive producing.

The series isn’t a guarantee and just a pilot is in the works. Gaiman has had success currently with American Gods at Starz, Lucifer formerly on Fox and now Netflix and The Sandman coming to Netflix. Gaiman has an overall deal with Amazon which airs Good Omens. Amazon is also readying based on Gaiman’s Anansi Boys.

Doom Patrol is Coming to DC Universe as a One-Hour Live Action Drama

DC Entertainment has announced that the upcoming DC Universe digital service has ordered its next original series, the one-hour live-action drama Doom Patrol, from executive producers Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Jeremy Carver, and Sarah Schechter. Doom Patrol is direct-to-series with 13 episodes ordered.

Written by Jeremy Carver, the series is based on DC characters originally written and drawn by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani.

Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities — but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.

Doom Patrol will begin production this year for a 2019 debut on DC Universe.

DC Universe is a new digital service operated by Warner Bros. Digital Networks. The platform includes the announced Titans, Swamp Thing, Young Justice: Outsiders, and Harley Quinn.
