On Sunday, September 18th, Kate attended the Brooklyn Book Fair, where she signed and quickly sold through 100 books in two hours. This past week it was announced by the Borough President of Brooklyn, Marty Markowitz, that Kate had won the AT&T Fan Festival Prize. The prize included a $3500 donation to the literacy nonprofit of her choice, Kate donated the money to 826NYC. On Tuesday, September 27th, the official release date of HARK! A VAGRANT, after accepting her award and doing stock signings around Manhattan & Brooklyn, Kate launched her book at Housing Works, with Desert Island. With over 200 people in attendance, she sold close to 200 books.

A VAGRANT takes readers on a romp through history and literature — with dignity for few and cookies for all — with comic strips about famous authors, their characters, and political and historical figures, all drawn in Kate Beaton’s pared-down, excitable style. This collection features favourite stories as well as new, previously unpublished content. Whether she’s writing about Nikola Tesla, Napoleon, or Nancy Drew, Beaton brings a refined sense of the absurd to every situation.
In just four years, Beaton has taken the comics world by storm with her non sequiturs, cheeky comebacks and irreverent punch lines. With 1.2 million monthly hits on her site – 500,000 of them unique– and comics appearing in Harpers Magazine, the National Post and The New Yorker, her caricatures of historical and fictional figures filtered through a contemporary lens display a sharp, quick wit that knows no bounds. She has won the Doug Wright
Award, Harvey Award, and Ignatz Award.
Kate Beaton grew up in the Maritimes, specifically Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and anthropology at Mount Allison University. During her last two years in school, she contributed to the student newspaper, unexpectedly morphing her lifelong obsessions with literature, history, and drawing into very funny comics. In 2007, after prodding from friends, Beaton uploaded her first comics to her website, receiving acclaim that set her on the path to becoming one of the most successful and talked about new cartoonists of the past decade. She eventually self-published Never Learn Anything From History which sold 8000 units without distribution. Her comics have appeared in the New Yorker, Harpers, and the National Post.
