On Tuesday, September 27th, the official release date of HARK! A VAGRANT, after accepting her award and doing stock signings around Manhattan & Brooklyn, Kate launched her book at Housing Works, with Desert Island. With over 200 people in attendance, she sold close to 200 books.

HARK! A VAGRANT takes readers on a romp through history and literature — with dignity for few and cookies for all — with comic strips about famous authors, their characters, and political and historical figures, all drawn in Kate Beaton’s pared-down, excitable style. This collection features favourite stories as well as new, previously unpublished content. Whether she’s writing about Nikola Tesla, Napoleon, or Nancy Drew, Beaton brings a refined sense of the absurd to every situation.

In just four years, Beaton has taken the comics world by storm with her non sequiturs, cheeky comebacks and irreverent punch lines. With 1.2 million monthly hits on her site – 500,000 of them unique– and comics appearing in Harpers Magazine, the National Post and The New Yorker, her caricatures of historical and fictional figures filtered through a contemporary lens display a sharp, quick wit that knows no bounds. She has won the Doug Wright
Award, Harvey Award, and Ignatz Award.

Kate Beaton grew up in the Maritimes, specifically Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and anthropology at Mount Allison University. During her last two years in school, she contributed to the student newspaper, unexpectedly morphing her lifelong obsessions with literature, history, and drawing into very funny comics. In 2007, after prodding from friends, Beaton uploaded her first comics to her website, receiving acclaim that set her on the path to becoming one of the most successful and talked about new cartoonists of the past decade. She eventually self-published Never Learn Anything From History which sold 8000 units without distribution. Her comics have appeared in the New Yorker, Harpers, and the National Post.

Small Press Expo Announces the Ignatz Award Nominees for SPX 2011

Official Press Release

Small Press Expo Announces the Ignatz Award Nominees for SPX 2011

Bethesda, Maryland; August 18, 2011 – The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels and alternative political cartoons, is pleased to announce nominees for the fifteenth annual presentation of the Ignatz Awards, a celebration of outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning.

The Ignatz, named after George Herriman’s brick-wielding mouse from his long running comic strip Krazy Kat, recognizes exceptional work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz Awards are a festival prize, the first of such in the United States comic book industry.

The nominees for the ballot were determined by a panel of five of the best of today’s comic artists, Rina Ayuyang, Mike Dawson, Kris Dresen, Theo Ellsworth, and John Porcellino, with the votes cast for the awards by the attendees during SPX. The Ignatz Awards will be presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 9:00 PM.

Additional information on the nominees and previews (as available) can be found at http://www.spxpo.com/ignatz-awards.

SPX will be held Saturday, September 10 from 11AM to 7PM and Sunday, September 11, noon-6PM at The North Bethesda Marriott Convention Center  in Bethesda, Maryland. Admission is $10 for a single day and $15 for both days.

For further information on the Ignatz Awards, the nominees or to request an interview, please contact Warren Bernard at warren@spxpo.com.
