Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Betrothed #1 (AfterShock Comics) – Sean Lewis and Steve Uy’s new series and those creators alone have us excited. The concept is out there involving two individuals who each lead an army at war with each other but when they turn eighteen they either need to get married or fight to the death.

Come Into Me #1 (Black Mask Studio) – A new horror series about body image, social media, and memory. Sounds interesting to us!

Eternity Girl #1 (DC Comics/DC’s Young Animal) – The teasers in “Milk Wars” got us amped up and we were already excited about this new series from Magdalene Visaggio and Sonny Liew.

Ghost Money #8 (Lion Forge Comics) – You probably have been missing this series about all of the money terrorists made from 9/11. Really interesting stuff that reads like the best thrillers.

Ghostbusters: Crossing Over #1 (IDW Publishing) – When the containment unit empties, who you gonna call? Every Ghostbuster in every dimension. Sounds like fun!

Infidel #1 (Image Comics) – Fantastic psychological horror with a religious twist.

Mister Miracle #7 (DC Comics) – A fantastic issue that picks up after the shocking end of the last one. Great humor to it as Mister Miracle and Barda have their kid!

New Mutants: Dead Souls #1 (Marvel) – New Mutants… we’re in.

Puerto Rico Strong (Lion Forge Comics) – A charity anthology to raise money for the people of Puerto Rico. A mix of education and entertainment and a must get.

Star Wars: Thrawn #2 (Marvel) – The rise of Thrawn!!! Adapting the books, it’s a must for Star Wars fans.

Top Pick: Detective Comics #974 (DC Comics) – I have loved this comic since DC Rebirth. Tynion has been fantastic on it, and the team dynamic has never felt stale. There has been new characters brought in, old characters brought back, and the inclusion of Clayface has been wonderful. This issue deals with the fallout from the giant clay monster hulking out (claying out?) again, and losing control.

Action Comics #997 (DC Comics) – The arc with Booster and Supes has been really fun, and we are getting so close to #1000! I am excited to how Jurgens ends this arc on the series before Bendis steps in, as it has been a really great series since Rebirth, much like Detective.

Sideways #1 (DC Comics) – This is another book in the new line of heroes DC is introducing. The character design looks really cool, and the premise is interesting. I make no guarantees as I still need to read it soon, but a new #1 can always be fun, and if it isn’t you’re out just a few bucks on taking a chance on a new series.

Dark Knights Rising: The Wild Hunt #1 (DC Comics) – DC’s Metal event has been a really fun and wild ride. This book deals with the Dark Knights/Evil Batmen from other dimensions. I have high hopes for this book, though I do hope these villains and this tale won’t start dragging on and really delivers as it has so far.

Old Man Logan #35 (Marvel) – Another fantastic and overlooked series that has been consistently great, even after Lemire left and Brisson took over. Grab this if you’re in for a nostalgia fix for old school Wolverine, Silver Samarui, and The Hand. It’s great!

Top Pick: Avengers #680 (Marvel) – “No Surrender” has been a blast so far as far as events living up to the hype and delivering despite a weekly delivery. That new issue every week has been part of the success as we don’t have to wait too long for each issue which has been filled with eye catching moments. No idea where this is all going, but I’m along for the ride.

Catalyst Prime Accell #8 (Lion Forge Comics) – Lion Forge’s Catalyst Prime universe has delivered on its promise of diverse titles, creators, and characters. This version of their speedster has been lots of fun delivering laughs and amazing visuals.

Ghost Money #7 (Lion Forge Comics) – A series that’s completely under the radar. Basically, someone made a lot of money off of 9/11 (true fact) and this series is about those dollars. Where did it all go? Lots of political intrigue and politics. Very interesting series that’s like no other.

Judas #3 (BOOM! Studios) – And another original series… this one is about Judas after the whole betrayal thing. It’ll get you thinking about religion in a very different way.

Star Wars: Thrawn #1 (Marvel) – The book series now comes to comics as we learn more about the legend.

Death of Love #1 (Image Comics) –  After a weekend when almost everyone seemed to be talking about Comics Gate, Indie Mafia hit man Justin Jordan drops a great response to MRAs, misogynists and nice guys everywhere.

Top Pick: Ragman #1 (DC Comics) – I’ve always been fond of this character: a Jewish vigilante preying on Gotham City criminals by harnessing the strength of the Souls of the Guilty as a redemptive force to help them reach heaven. Originally created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert back in 1976, he is now reimagined by the capable Ray Fawkes and Inaki Miranda.

Catalyst Prime Noble Vol 2 #1 (Lion Forge Comics) – Thus begins the second arc as Noble continues his quest to uncover the truth, but spurns his wife who must now fight to get the husband she knew back. It is penned by Brandon Thomas with art by Roger Robinson; and this week features a brilliant cover by Khary Randoph and Emilio Lopez!

Dying and the Dead #6 (Image Comics) – For a while I thought Hickman and Bodenheim had given up on this project. I’m glad they continued with the series centered on an aged commando team doing the dirty work for a secretive sect of Immortals.

BabyTeeth #5 (AfterShock Comics) – Donny Cates has been belting hit after hit, and this is no exception. marines, assassins, mom, and her newborn Antichrist are the frontliners in this well written action-packed series, featuring art by Garry Brown.

Grass Kings #8 (BOOM! Studios) – A well-crafted mystery series set in a fringe town of outcasts, produced by Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins.

Top Pick: Dark Knights: Metal #3 (DC Comics) – This event/story has been so crazy that it just works. Even the tie in books with Gotham Resistance, and all of the other Dark Knights has kept me excited and interested in something that’s creepy, bizarre, and fun. I am throwing up the devil horns on this one! Highly recommended!

Mister Miracle #3 (DC Comics) – Tom King is one of the best writers around, and most people would agree with that. Now add in an older and fun Kirby character and much like King did with Vision, throw him into something new, and you have an edge of your seat formula. King does vulnerable very good, and this has been fantastic so far.

Despicable Deadpool #287 (Marvel) – Deadpool vs. Cable, or at least that’s what this book is making us think. It’s a classic fight between two over the top characters that are getting ready to buddy up or fight in the Deadpool 2 movie. The solicits say Deadpool is turning back into more of a villain, since he has been down on his luck, and has made some pretty major mistakes lately. I am hyped for this one.

Royal City #6 (Image Comics) – Jeff Lemire is one of the best creators in comics right now. I love his writing. I love his art, and I love this series. This follows a family that while it plays with some supernatural elements, it feels very real, and full of emotions. The first trade released just recently, so grab it and see what all the fuss is about.

Animosity Vol. 2 TP (AfterShock Comics) – If you haven’t read this series, then now is the time to grab both trades. It’s a post-apocalyptic world run by animals who can speak. Some want peace, some want revenge, and the humans must do what they can to survive. It’s a lot of fun, and sad at times, but it is an awesome concept and execution.

Top Pick: Falcon #1 (Marvel) – Marvel Legacy has been kicking off and it’ll be interesting to see where this character and series goes, especially considering the entire concept of Captain America has been tarnished and Sam Wilson’s own recent series.

Fighting American #1 (Titan Comics) – The classic character is back and it’s great to see it. I have no idea what to expect but this is one I’ve been looking forward to reading.

Ghost Money #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – The first two issues have been intriguing as all the money gained from 9/11 is explored. Interesting plot and things have really been picking up.

Lazaretto #2 (BOOM! Studios) – A horror comic featuring college students quarantined in a dorm at a college. It’s claustrophobic in all the right ways.

Mech Cadet Yu #3 (BOOM! Studios) – Kids and giant robots! Greg Pak’s writing is absolutely amazing and the art is a really interesting style that enhances the youthful feel of the book. Absolutely love this series.

Top Pick: Runaways #1 (Marvel) – I was late to the party when this book was first out, but I did read and catch up on it and I really enjoyed it. I’m excited to see these characters now and find out what’s been going on with them.

Secret Empire Omega #1 (Marvel) – Secret Empire was a train wreck that I just couldn’t look away from. I followed the entire run just to see how bad the story could get…and wow I was not disappointed. And I still can’t get rid of the stink that last issue left. I still can’t believe the whole thing was green lit. But I digress; This issue is only on my list just to see what happens after the dust settles….and to see if the world reverts back to normal just as quickly as it seemed to be taken over by Hydra, though I have a feeling it will be a “long road back to normalcy” *eye roll*

Uncanny Avengers #27 (Marvel) – Scarlet Witch is back on an Avengers team…enough said!

Top Pick: Harley Quinn 25th Anniversary Special #1 (DC Comics) – What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas… until now, find out what happened in Vegas with some of our favorite DC lady bad asses.

The Defenders #5 (Marvel) – The Punisher has gone rogue and is turning on the team. I feel an epic rumble going down!

Runaways #1 (Marvel) – They’re back and I’m here for it!!

Suicide Squad #25 (DC Comics) – The “Kill Your Darlings” arc is ending, grab popcorn because it’s going all the way down.

Wynonna Earp: Season Zero #3 (IDW Publishing) – Halfway through the story and Wynonna is giving us something to enjoy until we can see more of her and the game on TV.

Slam: The Next Jam #1 (BOOM! Studios) – The next season of this amazingly accurate and hella fun derby life comic is here and I’ve got all the feels!

Top Pick: Dark Nights: Metal #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue knocked it out of the park bringing together lots of hints and winks that have been building over the years as Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo reteamed for their latest Batman-centric adventure. The second really kicks things up to 11.

First Strike #3 (IDW Publishing) – A fun event that brings together G.I. Joe, Transformers, and more in a story that feels like something my 8 year old self would have come up with.

Ghost Money #2 (Lion Forge Comics) – A lot of money was made on 9/11, but what happened to it? This is that story. The first issue was unexpected and I was floored as to how good it was.

Mech Cadet Yu #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue was beyond adorable in a story that’s perfect for comic fans of all ages. Giant robots, aliens, a kid and his robot friend, it’s a fun series that really surprised me as to how much I enjoyed it. A comic that was on my radar quickly jumped high on my list of ones I look forward to.

Mister Miracle #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was amazing and the second brings us the war as a new Highfather takes his throne and a conspiracy may be afoot.

Catalyst Prime: Accell #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – Lion Forge has been knocking it out of the park with their new line of superhero comics and this is one that’s tons of fun.

Centipede #2 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The first issue was a surprising solid read. Based on the classic Atari game it’s history sucked us in but the first issue has us coming back.

The Defenders #4 (Marvel) – The first three issues have been fantastic and we’re interested in seeing where this goes and how it lines up with the upcoming Netflix series.

First Strike #1 (IDW Publishing) – The next big event in the Hasbro universe kicks off here. To see GI Joe and Transformers interact, we’re sold.

Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey #1 (Marvel) – The first “Generations” comic was a dud but we want to see if that was a fluke or if it was par.

Ghost Money #1 (Lion Forge Comics) – Money was stolen with 9/11 in this new series which has one of the most unique concepts we’ve heard in quite some time.

Grass Kings #6 (BOOM! Studios) – The first five issues have been as amazing to read as they are to look at.

Ian Livingstone’s Freeway Fighter #4 (Titan Comics) – The first three issues have been high octane entertainment in what feels like a series that deserves more time. Hopefully we’ll get more after this story wraps up.

Inhumans: Once and Future Kings #1 (Marvel) – Christopher Priest is writing this. That alone has us interested.

Quake Champions #1 (Titan Comics) – The classic video game comes to comics and we’re intrigued to see what’s done with it.

Redlands #1 (Image Comics) – A creepy new series mixing vampires in a southern town. It’s good, real good. Read our review.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #11 (Marvel) – One of the best comics Marvel is putting out today. Aphra is the best addition to the Star Wars universe in a long time.

Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian & K2SO Special #1 (Marvel) – Wonder how these two met? Well here you go!

Transformers: Till All Are One #12 (IDW Publishing) – I know what you’re saying, it’s a comic based on a cartoon featuring giant robots. Every series impresses with comics that touch on adult topics such as when life begins, castes, and politics. This one nails the latter with a story that rivals any story where individuals jockey for control.

The Unsound #3 (BOOM! Studios) – Cullen Bunn has been crafting a creepy horror comic that has layers to it that can be discussed for days.
