Review: Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1

Our heroes have battled the evil of the Foot Clan in Gotham City and Bane in New York, but now Krang has gotten his hands on the most dangerous technologies in the DC Universe-and no universe is safe from his wrath!

What the what!?

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1 kicks off the third, and final, volume of the crossover event between Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Each previous volume has been fun bring elements of the two series together in a way that’s hard to not enjoy. This third volume… is something completely different.

Writer James Tynion IV delivers a first issue that feels like an Elseworlds story. The two worlds of these characters have been fused delivering characters and new looks for classic characters that bring so many different elements together. It’s a bit of a headscratcher to start but as the story goes on it becomes clearer what’s happening.

Then you get to the end. And. HOLY. CRAP.

What starts as an issue that’s entertaining and feels a bit Elseworlds changes into something completely different evoking classic DC stories.

Tynion is helped by the art team of Freddie E. Williams II, Kevin Eastman, colorist Jeremy Colwell, and letterer Tom Napolitano. The character and world design is key for this issue. Every small detail gives clues as to what’s going on. The mash-ups of characters are amazing and fun. It reminds me at times of the various lines of TMNT figures where the characters were some theme. There’s clearly so much though put into this issue beyond just having these two properties team up and fight each other’s rogues. Eastman’s contribution in particular is beyond inspired.

The issue is probably not on enough people’s radars and that’s there loss as this looks like it is taking some great elements from DC and just rolling with it and having fun. This may be the start of one of the most fun comic crossovers in a while.
