Valiant Heads to Farrago Comics for FREE Digital Comics

farrago comicsWe’re got the scoop and breaking the news that Farrago Comics will now be offering comics from Valiant Entertainment through their digital app. Valiant will be offering issues #1 and #2 of the popular X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Harbinger, Shadowman, Archer & Armstrong, and more, all for free.

The Farrago Comics app, allows individuals to read comic books for free with revenue generated from full-page ads. In January, Farrago announced a partnership with IDW Publishing where they offered ten #1 issues. This also marked the apps move out of beta. In February, the company launched into original comics through a Kickstarter for Rob Kutner’s Shrinkage which is illustrated by John Lucas.

The app is available for iPad and Android.

IDW Publishing Comes to Farrago Comics

farrago comicsThe last we had mentioned Farrago Comics was back during San Diego Comic Con, when the digital platform was just starting to stretch its legs. The platform’s model is similar to Pandora/Spotify, that “uniquely supports and favors creators.” Both systems rely heavily on advertising for revenue, but unlike Pandora and Spotfiy, Farrago’s model just relies on advertising for revenue . It’s a business model that’s relatively new to the industry and the latest example of the various digital models that have launched in the past year.

Since then, there’s been a bit of a soft launch in a beta phase with the platform focused mostly on Golden Age comics and indie creators and a move from the initial iPad app to also being available on the Android system as well (it says for tablets, but it worked on my phone). While focused on classic and indie books, the app also featured some series from Top Cow, and creator Paul Jenkins.

This past week, the highest profile publisher to date was announced. IDW Publishing will see some of its comics come to the app.

Here’s the whole list and what’s out now:

  • 30 Days of Night #1
  • Mystery Society #1
  • Winterworld #1
  • Zombies vs Robots #0

On Farrago: January 21, 2014

  • Groom Lake #1
  • The Last Fall #1
  • V-Wars #1

On Farrago: January 28, 2014

  • Night of 1,000 Wolves #1
  • Pantheon #1
  • Memorial #1

All of that’s a nice start, and many of these comics you’d have to pay for on other apps. It’ll be interesting to see how this partnership expands.

SDCC 2014: Farrago Comics Heads to SDCC Calling for “Comic Book Freedom”

farrago-BG-fightThere’s a new digital comic player on the market. Farrago Comics is heading to San Diego Comic-Con with calls for “Comic Book Freedom.” Their goal is to “crack open the comic book industry in favor of a more fan-friendly and creator-centric model.” At the show, they’ll be working on pre-registration for their app that will launch first on iPads in August 2014.

Farrago’s model is similar to Pandora/Spotify, that “uniquely supports and favors creators.” Both systems rely heavily on advertising for revenue, but you can pay to upgrade the service. Both of those services as well have come under fire for little payouts to musicians, and the music industry consistently fighting to get more money out of them. There’s also reports of collusion within the music industry against those services. Hopefully things work out better in the comics industry.

Two names mentioned in the company’s initial release are Eisner Award winning writer Paul Jenkins of Spiderman, Wolverine, and Fairy Quest fame, and Rob Kutner, current writer for TBS’s Conan, five-time Emmy winning writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and co-creator of the new sci-fi comedy album 2776.

The company will be at SDCC handing out flyers, buttons, and T-shirts to promote the app. It will also hold an Instagram contest (#farragocomics) with signed Farrago artwork by Andrew Robinson, artist of The Fifth Beatle and creator of Dusty Star, as prizes, and is co-sponsoring San Diego’s BoomShop of Comics Drink & Draw, Saturday, July 26.
