Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Marvel’s Wonder Man

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is shifting the world of DC’s Aquaman and Watchmen to the lead role in the Disney+ Marvel Studios series Wonder Man.

The character debuted in The Avengers #9 in 1964 and was created by Stan Lee, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby. The character has ion based powers including super strength, later joins the Avengers, and has been in a relationship with the Scarlet Witch. The character has been both a hero and villain and generally has been absent from the Marvel comic universe in recent years.

Announced in June, the series sees teh involvement of Shang-Chi‘s Destin Daniel Cretton and Hawkeye‘s Andrew Guest. Cretton will direct while Guest is the head writer. The series will also see the return of Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has history with comic properties having won an Emmy in 2020 for his turn as Dr. Manhattan in HBO’s Watchmen. He also plays Black Manta who was in 2018’s Aquaman and will return in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Shang-Chi Director will take on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that Destin Daniel Cretton will direct Marvel‘s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Cretton previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for the film studio.

After that film Cretton signed an overall deal with Marvel. He is currently developing a series with Andrew Guest focused on Wonder Man. There’s also the Shang-Chi sequel that’s in the works.

The writer(s) for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty have not been revealed but the film will help close out Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s expected to arrive May 2, 2025 and will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on November 7, 2025.

The seeds for the film are being laid out now as a version of the character debuted in Loki and being played by Jonathan Majors. He will next appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which is out February 17, 2023. That film launches Phase 5. The version in Ant-Man is different than the one in Loki as there’s multiple versions of the character.

Also revealed is that Bassam Tariq will be directing Blade which is scheduled for November 3, 2023; Julius Onah is directing Captain America: New World Order which is scheduled for May 3, 2024; and Jake Schreier is directing Thunderbolts which is the last film of Phase 5 and comes out July 26, 2024.

Destin Daniel Cretton Returns for Shang-Chi Sequel

Being one of the top grossing films of the year pretty much guarantees a sequel. Deadline is reporting that Destin Daniel Cretton has signed a multi-year deal with Disney‘s Marvel Studios and Hulu‘s Onyx Collective. Cretton is already developing a new Marvel show for Disney+. The filmmaker is returning to write and direct the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the highest grossing domestic release so far this year with $224.5 million and set a Labor Day record with $94.6 million. The film has grossed over $432 million worldwide.

Cretton is working on American Born Chinese based on the 2006 graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang. The series has gone straight-to-series order coming from Disney Branded Television/20th Television.

Black Widow is Coming to theaters AND Disney+ on July 9

After a lot of delays, Black Widow will finally be coming to theaters… and Disney+. Marvel Studios has revealed the film will be available through Disney+ through its Premier Access program starting July 9. Generally, Disney+ Premier Access has cost $29.99 and allows you to view the film as often as you’d like while you keep the Disney+ service.

In March 2020, it was announced that Black Widow would be delayed due to COVID. It was set to be released on May 1 2020. It then was pushed to November 6, 2020. It’s the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s Phase 4.

In Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. The movie is directed by Cate Shortland, produced by Kevin Feige, and stars Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff. Florence Pugh stars as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff.

Also announced, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has received a new release date, now arriving on September 3, 2021. Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film’s cast also includes Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s friend Katy, and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan. Additionally, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, and Ronny Chieng appear in the upcoming movie, which is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was to be released on February 12, 2021, and then was pushed to May 7, 2021.
