Wonder Girl is Not Getting Picked Up by The CW

Wonder GIrl

Last week it was announced by The CW they had ordered pilots of a few new series, DC’s Naomi being one of them. This left up in the air the future of a few series being worked on, including DC’s Wonder Girl. Executive producer/co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez went to Twitter a few days after the announcement to reveal that Wonder Girl was not going forward at The CW. It was revealed in November 2020 that the series was being worked on and a possibility. Wonder Girl was being developed by Rodriguez and Berlanti Productions.

The character is based on the DC character created by Joëlle Jones and debuted in comics as part of DC’s Future State event in early 2021. She is spinning out of the event to get her own comic series later this year. This would be the first Latina lead of a DC television series.

Wonder Girl centers on Yara Flor, a Latina Dreamer who was born of an Amazonian Warrior and a Brazilian River God. She learns that she’s Wonder Girl and with her newfound power fights evil forces that seek to destroy the world.

Rodriguez’s Tweet would indicate the project is completely over without a chance of it moving to HBO Max, the other home for DC live-action and animated projects. We’ll see if that changes if the comic series goes over big.

Deadline is reporting that a Wonder Girl television series is being worked on for The CW. It is being developed by executive producer/co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez and Berlanti Productions. The character is based on the DC character created by Joëlle Jones and will debut in comics soon as part of DC’s Future State event in early 2021.

The Future State series focuses on a possible future of the DC Universe and in this one Yara is Wonder Woman. A Wonder Girl series from Jones is also coming.

The new series joins the existing DC Universe, which includes Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, the upcoming Superman and Lois, Supergirl — which will be wrapping its run with the upcoming sixth season — and Black Lightning.
