Coco Wins the Weekend While Justice League Nears $500 Million

Coco won the three and five-day weekend earning an estimated $49 million over the three-day weekend and $71.2 million for the five-day. That’s the fourth largest Thanksgiving three and five day openings. Last year Moana opened with $82 million and went on to earn almost $650 million worldwide.

The film received an “A+” CinemaScore from an opening day audience that was 53% female and 55% of the moviegoers were 25 years old or younger.

Internationally, the film expanded debuting with the second highest opening for a Pixar/Disney animated film in China. The movie has earned $82.2 million at the international box office for a total of $153 million worldwide.

Justice League was in second place with a drop close to 57%. It earned an estimated $40.7 million for three days and $59.6 million over five. That brings its domestic total to $171.5 million after ten days. At the foreign box office it added $72.2 million from 66 markets pushing its international earnings over $300 million to $309.8 million. Worldwide the film has earned $481.3 million.

In third place was Wonder which saw a slight drop of 19% in its second week earning an estiamted $22.3 million over three days and $32.2 million over five. Domestically the film has earned $70 million over ten days.

In fourth was Thor: Ragnarok which earned $16.8 million over three days and $25 million over five. Domestically, the film has earned $277.5 million and $512.6 million at the foreign box office for a worldwide total of $790.1 million.

Rounding out the top five was Daddy’s Home 2 which brought in $13.3 million over three days and $18.6 million over five. Worldwide the film has earned $87 million.

With no new wide releases next week, expect the box office to look very similar to this week (but with lower earnings).

When it comes to other comic adaptations in the theaters…

My Friend Dahmer improved from #24 to #20 and earned $155,000 to bring its domestic total to $742,113.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle held steady at #23 adding $108,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $99.9 million. Worldwide the film has earned $394.1 million.

We’ll be back in an hour for a deeper dive into this year’s comic adaptation earnings.

Justice League Falls Short with $278.8 Million Opening

Justice League failed to top $100 million domestically in its opening three day weekend earning an estimated $93.8 million. The film won the weekend but fell short of expectations which saw it earning between $100 and $110 million. The film earned $13 million on Thursday previews which was $2 million more than Wonder Woman. That film earned $103.2 million. It’s the lowest opening for any of the DC Extended Universe films so far.

But, things weren’t all bad as the film also brought in $185.5 million from 65 foreign markets to bring its worldwide total to $278.8 million. The film had the second largest opening ever for a Warner Bros. film in China and it has yet to open in Japan. That happens on November 23. With a reported budget of $300 million, the film will need to earn about $600 million to break even.

Reviews of the film were mixed with a B+ CinemaScore. The audience was 58% male and 69% over the age of 25. We predict the film will earn between $200 and $250 million domestically with $500-$600 at foreign markets to be around $750 million total, a number that’s nothing to sneeze at.

This coming week sees the release of Coco which will likely bump Justice League from the top of the box office and add to a narrative of its failure.

In second place was another new film doing some counter programming. Wonder earned an estimated $27.1 million. That beats expectations and the film earned an A+ CinemaScore.

In third place was Thor: Ragnarok which brought in an additional $21.8 million domestically to bring that total to $247.4 million. It also added an estimated $24.1 million internationally to bring that total to $490.7 million and the worldwide total over $700 million. Worldwide the film has earned $738.1 million so far.

Daddy’s Home 2 dropped from second to fourth with $14.8 million to bring its total domestically to $50.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was Murder on the Orient Express which earned an estimated $13.8 million to bring its domestic total to $51.7 million in its second week.

When it comes to other comic adaptation at the theater….

Kingsman: The Golden Circle came in at #19 improving from #24. It earned an estimated $175,000 to bring its domestic total to $99.7 million. Worldwide the film has earned $393.3 million which is about $21 million short of the original.

My Friend Dahmer saw success moving from #32 last week to #20 this week and earning an estimated $165,000 while it has expanded to 75 theaters. The film has brought in an estimated $485,675.

Thor: Ragnarok Repeats at the Top of the Box Office

It’s not surprising, but Thor: Ragnarok repeated at the top of the box office with an estimated $56.6 million over the weekend. The film also added $76 million to its international total as well.

The film has earned $211.6 million domestically, $438.5 million internationally, and $650.1 million worldwide. That domestic total in ten days is more than the first two films’ entire domestic run. It will easily pass Doctor Strange‘s $232 million which opened the same weekend last year. It has also passed the worldwide totals of the first two films.

In second place was Daddy’s Home 2 which earned $30 million off of a $69 million budget. That’s $8.7 million less than the original film when it debuted.

In third place was another new film, Murder on the Orient Express which brought in an estimated $28.2 million. That film has a $55 million budget. At the foreign box office the film has earned $57.2 million.

In fourth place was A Bad Moms Christmas which dropped from last weekend’s second place. It added an estimated $11.5 million to its domestic total to bring it to $39.9 million.

In fifth place was Jigsaw which dropped from third. It added $3.4 million to its total to bring it to $79.1 million worldwide on a $10 million budget.

In other comic movie numbers…

Kingsman: The Golden Circle earned $420,000 after 8 weeks to bring its worldwide total to $393.1 million.
