Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Holds on to First Place in the Weekend Box Office

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings repeated as champ of the weekend box office. The film added an estimated $35.8 million to its domestic total which now stands at $145.6 million. That weekend total was a drop of 52.5% which is a little bit better than average for a comic book film which can easily drop 55% to 60% in their second weekend.

Internationally, the film rocked, with an almost similar amount as the previous weekend’s gross during the week. It earned about $55.8 million bringing the international gross to $112 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $257.6 million.

Malignant debuted in third place with a dual opening on HBO Max. It’s unknown how many watched the film there. It’s unknown if the numbers are good if they’d be released as it would provide more ammunition for theater owners to say that same day digital releases are hurting box office grosses. But, a solid number would also push back against any negative narrative the film is a failure. The film grossed $5.6 million domestically and $9.5 million internationally for a worldwide total of $15.1 million.

Candyman slipped to fourth place from last weekend’s second. The film earned an estimated $4.8 million to bring its domestic total to $48 million. The film earned just $300,000 internationally over the week to bring that gross to $11.2 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $59.2 million.

Shang-Chi Takes the Box Office with a Labor Day Record but Short of Black Widow’s Debut

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings easily took the weekend box office setting a Labor Day weekend record… but all is not perfect. The film earned an estimated $75.4 million over the three day weekend and is projected to earn between $83 and $90 million over the four days. The previous weekend best was Rob Zombie’s Halloween which earned $30.5 million in 2007. The film also earned $56.2 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $127.6 million.

Where things can be debated is whether the “theater only” strategy paid off for Disney and Marvel Studios.

In July, Black Widow debuted with $80.4 million domestically and $78 million internationally. In both of those measurements that film did better than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings but it also debuted on Disney+ for an extra $30 plus subscriptions and reportedly generated an additional $60 million. That offer wasn’t available for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. So, did the film miss out on revenue?

What can be argued is that the lack of a Disney+ didn’t boost box office receipts like theaters might have expected. Black Widow so far is the top opening film of the year and Shang-Chi is second beating F9 by about $1 million. Theater owners will argue the lack of digital release did help to boost Shang-Chi‘s debut due to the record setting weekend. But, when it comes to “origin” films, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is on the lower end of Marvel Cinematic Universe debut earnings with only The Incredible Hulk, Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Thor lower. And, when adjusted for inflation only Ant-Man is lower with The Incredible Hulk being close with $70.3 million. Disney likely lost out on money by not releasing the film on Disney+.

What really needs to be watched is the film’s second weekend and if it sees a massive drop-off like Black Widow though the two are very different in reviews with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings receiving much higher reviews from both critics and the audience. It’s possible a positive word of mouth will soften the second weekend drop. What’s clear is that audiences are being picky about what they see in theaters in the age of COVID. Studios need to be much more strategic for the next year in deciding what to release only in theaters and what to dual release on-demand.

In second place was Candyman which dropped 52% from its debut weekend. The film earned an estimated $10.6 million to bring its domestic total to $39.1 million. Internationally, the film earned about $5.7 million over the week to bring that to $10.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed a little over $50 million after two weeks.

Free Guy slipped one spot to third earning an estimated $8.7 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $91.9 million after four weeks. Over the week the film added an impressive $47.1 million to bring that to $147.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $239.3 million.

PAW Patrol: The Movie grossed an estimated $4 million to bring its domestic total to $30.3 million. $12.5 million was added to its international total over the week to bring that to $50.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $80.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was Jungle Cruise which added a little under $4 million to its domestic total. It now has grossed $105.6 million. Its international total stands at $86.9 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $192.5 million.

It’s close to the results from three weekends ago. The average earning was $1,648.26 this past weekend, a slight dip from the previous weekend’s $1,666.92.

New CANDYMAN trailer teases a whole hive of angry Candymen

For a villain as iconic as Candyman, whose status remains in effect thanks to Tony Todd’s timeless performance, finding a new actor to play the character is a daunting task. The challenge lies in finding someone that can honor and add to the iconic status of the character while also embodying him. Jackie Earle Haley, for instance, tried his hand at it by becoming Freddy Krueger in the 2010 reboot of Nightmare on Elm Street. While Haley turned in a great performance, the movie itself didn’t live up to expectations and the new Freddy seemed to become dimmer in the process, not to mention that there was something missing about the updated version.

Nia DaCosta’s 2021 interpretation of Candyman looks like it’s eager to avoid comparisons and unrealistic expectations by not sticking to a single manifestation of the monster. Instead, it’s going for several manifestations of the character at once by placing black victims of police violence and brutality as potential candidates for the now shared title.

The movie’s latest trailer goes as far as to confirm that the idea is to turn the monster into a kind of vessel that finds its life source in the people American culture has wronged the most. Much like the original 1992 movie, the new Candyman comes as a dark response to the racial conditions of its time.

For the ‘92 Candyman, it was the lack of support for the more “urban” sections of cities and then the misrepresented idea that illegal activity was a legitimate and natural character trait of low-income black neighborhoods.

The 2021 Candyman seems to be powered by a Black Lives Matter perspective that frames police misconduct as the primary creator of Candymen. That, in itself, does enough to put the latest iteration of the story in a spot where the original concept is allowed to continue coursing through the movie’s veins while also injecting a healthy dose of new horrors to turn the experience into something different.

As a horror fan, this has to be one of the anticipated horror movies in recent years. It has a world of possibilities riding on it and it can inspire a new generation of black horror that can continue to challenge the bad things that turn victims into dark forces of retribution.

Candyman opens in theaters on August 27, 2021.

Tenet Takes the Weekend Box Office with $6.7 million. New Mutants Holds on to Second

The New Mutants

The total weekend box office was under $15 million as theaters are struggling in a COVID world.

Tenet lead the weekend with an estimated $6.7 million down from the $20.2 million from the previous weekend when it opened domestically. The film has now grossed $29.5 million domestically in its second week.

Internationally, the film is up to $177.5 million where it earned about $30.6 million over the weekend. The film has now crossed $207 million worldwide.

The New Mutants held on to second place with an estimated $2.1 million. The previous weekend saw $3 million dollars over three days and $3.7 million over the four day holiday. Domestically, the film has earned $15.3 million which is only slightly more than the $14 million earned so far internationally. Worldwide, the film has earned $29.3 million.

In new films, The Broken Hearts Gallery from Sony opened in fourth place with an estimated $855,000 domestically.

None of the above is good news.

What’s clear is, we’re in weird times and it’s hard to compare what’s going on with anything of the past. Still, the above is not a good sign for the short term future of movie theaters.

The good is, theaters need not worry about overcrowding and becoming major hotspots for the spread of COVID if no one is going.

The bad is that distributors have no reason to release major films which will not earn their costs back. Instead, we’re likely to see a string of nostalgic re-releases, events, and smaller titles fill the gap leaving theaters to struggle further.

With recent changes to release dates of Wonder Woman 1984 and Candyman, it’s clear studios are seeing the writing on the wall and saying it’s not worth it. For as little as theaters are bringing in, they may come to the same conclusion as well.
