Rob Guillory Reveals Chew is being Developed by Blumhouse Productions/Atomic Monster
Rob Guillory has announced that the paperwork is done and Chew is once again in development, this time from Blumhouse Productions/Atomic Monster. The series, from Guillory and John Layman, was first published in June 2009 and ran for 60 issues being published by Image Comics. Guillory has confirmed the plan is for a live-action television series currently.
The series was a hit following Tony Chu, a police detective who was a cibopath, able to get psychic impressions/memories from food he ingests. In this world, chick and other bird meats are illegal after an outbreak of bird flu that killed millions. Chu, with his partner Mason Savoy, focus on food related cases for the FDA.
Beyond the main series, a three-issue crossover with Outer Darkness was released as well as a spin-off series called Chu.
This isn’t the first attempt to adapt Chew. In 2010 it was announced that Circle of Confusion was adapting the comic and in 2011 Showtime announced it was developing it into a half-hour comedy series. That development ended in 2013. An animated film/television adaption began production in 2014 with Steven Yeun, Felicia Day, and Robin Williams. David Tennant replaced Williams after the stars tragic death. The voice recording was completed but the animation was never completed with the project eventually shelved.
IDW Games released a tabletop board game based on the series in 2015 and a tabletop roleplaying game was crowdfunded in 2021 and published by Imagining Games. That game won a Judge’s Spotlight Award at the 2024 ENNIE Awards.
