Moana Rules with $81.1 million Holiday Opening

moana-posterIt was a bit of a mixed weekend as Moana opened in first place. The film earned an estimated $55.5 million over the weekend and an estimated $81.1 million over five days. That’s the second largest Thanksgiving debut. Disney’s Frozen holds the top spot. It bests Toy Story 2 which earned $80.1 million. The film also opened in a few international territories earning an estimated $16.3 million. So far the film has earned $97.4 million.

The audience for Moana was mostly female with 55%, 34% age 12 or under, 43% age 25 and older, and 72% of it made up of families. Audiences gave the film an “A” CinemaScore so it should do well over the next few weeks.

In second place was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The film earned an estimated $45.1 million to bring its domestic total to $156.2 million. The film also earned $132 million internationally. The film now stands at $473.7 million.

In third place was Doctor Strange which brought in $13.4 million to bring its domestic total to $205.1 million. The film has passed the domestic run of Thor, Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Incredible Hulk. It’ll pass Thor: The Dark World this week. The film is currently ninth in domestic and international earnings for 2016 and it still has yet to open in Japan which won’t happen until January 2017. We’ll have more insight in an hour.

New film Allied opened in fourth with an estimated $13 million. That’s around the expectations for the film, but it was expected to do about $20 million over the five days and it only did $18 million. In other new films,

In other new films, Bad Santa 2 earned $6.1 million over three days and $9 million over five days. With a budget of just $26 million that’s not horrible, but this franchise is most likely dead after this, barring some Christmas miracle.

Opening in twelfth was Rules Don’t Apply with an estimated $1.6 million for three days and $2.2 million for five days. That’s the worst three-day result for 2016 with just $661 per theater and the sixth worst of all-time with films debuting in over 2,000 theaters.

In other comic films, Officer Downe was released on demand and in a very limited theatrical release. In theaters the film has earned $470 in the two that it has been released in.

Next weekend new horror film Incarnate opens and Oscar hopeful Jackie begins to roll out.
