44Flood & IDW Publishing Introduce Libretto Volume 1: Vampirism

44Flood’s first project developed with IDW Publishing is Libretto, a 9×12” anthology presenting emerging and world-class artists as they explore a single theme using diverse mediums such as comics, oil painting, photography, sculpting and more.

The libretto refers to the part of an opera or a musical that is the words or lyrics, and is distinct from the music. 44Flood’s Libretto will be the “text” to the “music” that is a central theme, starting with Libretto Volume 1: Vampirism coming this April.

Libretto Volume 1 is curated/edited by Kasra Ghanbari and has the theme vampirism, being the misuse of power, as well as the objectification and exploitation of others. Featured contributors give their unique perspectives on this theme, with many sections including an interview of the contributor conducted by another artist.

This 200-page softcover will feature contributors that include Ben Templesmith, David Stoupakis, Riley Rossmo, Christopher Mitten, George Pratt, menton3, and many, many more.  Several of the artists also give a rare look at the techniques and processes they used to create pieces for the book.  This is your rare opportunity to explore the dark world of vampirism as seen in an artist’s mind.

Image Expo 2014: Nick Spencer Brings Three All-New Series to Image

In 2014, Nick Spencer will team up with three different artists and launch three new thriller series sure to capture readers’ imaginations.

A contemporary fantasy epic with a spy thriller aesthetic, Paradigms will showcase art by Butch Guice and explore a world that exists beyond, or more specifically behind, ours. In the shadows where magic is real, warring clans of sorcerers battle for power and the favor of their gods.

A sci-fi thriller of dead worlds, lost secrets, and hidden dangers, Cerulean, with art by Frazer Irving, follows the last survivors of the destruction of Earth as they struggle to rebuild civilization on a distant planet full of its own mysteries.

In the Great Beyond, featuring art by Morgan Jeske a “post-life community” values the size of your bank account over morals and values—and your place in the hereafter is determined by it. But then polite society is rocked by the apparent suicide of one of its own.

Paradigms, Cerulean, and Great Beyond are all new, ongoing science-fiction/fantasy series coming to Image Comics in 2014.

Image Expo 2014: Wytches Will Put Blood-Curdling Spin on Mythology of Witches

Scott Snyder and Jock will team up for a new, ongoing horror series called Wytches. Everything you thought you knew about witches is wrong. They are much darker, and they are much more horrifying.

Wytches takes the mythology of witches to a far creepier, bone-chilling place than readers have dared venture before. “I like taking classic monsters and re-imagining them in a fresh, contemporary, and much scarier way,” said Snyder.

Snyder and Jock have worked together previously on the Batman story “The Black Mirror” in the pages of Detective Comics and Snyder knew from the get-go that he wanted Jock on board.

Wytches is a new ongoing fantasy horror series coming to Image Comics in 2014. You’ve been warned.

Image Expo 2014: The Gods Are ReIncarnated in The Wicked and the Divine

What if every 90 years the gods were reincarnated? Coming this 2014, Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie team up to infuse new life into the old mythological characters in The Wicked and the Divine from Image Comics. The new ongoing series will feature guest creators and surprise arcs with alternate endings that will bring the gods of mythology to life.

Twelve gods will be briefly reincarnated in order to perform miracles like superheroes and bask in celebrity fame. But for the first time, there may be a thirteenth god reincarnated, and lucky number thirteen is tipping the delicate balance.

Gillen explained:

The idea of playing superheroes as celebrity isn’t exactly new. However, it’s always played cynical. The celebrity characters are always the debased bad guys, or at least the cautionary tale and wandering from the road of truth. It’s always implicitly arguing that these people are worse than the heroes who came before them because they’re on the cover of a magazine and they do a bit of coke. We’re not interested in that. We’re anti-that. We’ve all had pop-stars save our life.

As if superhero-like gods reincarnated isn’t enough to draw readers in, Gillen promises a hefty dose of drama and mystery as well. “There’ll be a lot of fights, drama, emotions, secrets, and kissing,” hinted Gillen. “Worth noting is the question of whether the lead ends up being a God is the story to begin with. As far as the world knows, there’s only twelve gods who appear. There may be a mystery going on.”

Image Expo 2014: Shutter, An All-New Urban Fantasy Adventure

Joe Keatinge teams up with artist Leila del Duca for her Image Comics debut in an all-new ongoing series combining urban fantasy and globe-spanning adventure, Shutter.

Kate Kristopher, once the most famous explorer on Earth—an Earth that’s far more fantastical than the one we know, filled with demons, gorgons, phantom ninjas, and various other monsters of lore—is forced to return to the adventurous life she left behind when a family secret threatens to destroy everything she spent her life protecting.

Kate’s character can be described as a contemporary Indiana Jones. Keatinge described the series in a release:

We’re looking at the 21st Century, where it’s at and where it’s going, and considering what the Adventurer for its time might be like—what would Indiana Jones be like if created in 2014? What’s after Lara Croft?. We’re at a much different time than the pulps and serial Indiana Jones and, to an extent, Lara Croft, were rooted in—information from all remote corners of the world comes from great ease, where we’re more knowledgeable about other cultures, where technology enables us to access we could only dream about. Where do you go from there?

Shutter is a new, ongoing fantasy, adventure series coming to Image Comics on April 9, 2014, the first issue of which will feature variant covers by Dustin Weaver, Brandon Graham, and Emma Ríos.

Image Expo 2014: Willingham and Kitson Bring Magic and Mayhem in Restoration

On Restoration Day, magic comes back into the world. This is not good news.

Bill Willingham and Barry Kitson reveal that the magic and gods of legend and lore are not just oral history, but real…and now they’re back in the forthcoming series Restoration.

Millennia ago, a group of some of the more forward-seeing movers and shakers in the world got together and decided to remove magic from the world—our world. They called themselves The Brotherhood of the Cauldron, because, in the first stages of their massive project, they would feed captured magical items and beings into a large magic cauldron, which would render them down into their most basic magic essence, which could then be bottled and stored away, much like we store the unwanted residue of our nuclear programs.

The world settled down into manageable natural laws that were always the same for everyone. Magic was gone. Until one day something terrible went wrong and the gods and monsters broke loose. Suddenly, all at once, magic came rushing back into the world.

Now the gods wish to keep their freedom—and magic—while the rest of the world seeks to imprison them. Will there be war? And who will win?

Restoration is a new ongoing fantasy action series coming to Image Comics in 2014.

Image Expo 2014: Tech Jacket Returns to Image Comics with an All-New Miniseries

The fan-favorite series Tech Jacket, returns with an all-new three-issue digital miniseries. Written by Joe Keatinge and drawn by Khary Randolph, this miniseries is the perfect introduction to Kirkman and EJ Su’s exciting superhero.

The return of Tech Jacket picks up a bit later than the original run. Keatinge gave some details about the series:

The original Tech Jacket run was largely about Zach having his role as our planet’s Galactic Guardian thrust upon him, fumbling with this new title, unsure of anything he encountered. Here Zach’s firmly in his position—perhaps even getting a little too comfortable with it—and finding out that being Earth’s defender from what lies beyond is more dangerous than he could ever imagine.

Ravaged by the Invincible War, Zach Thompson needs some time away from being Earth’s galactic guardian. But when his vacation doesn’t go as planned, Tech Jacket must return to face a brand new threat.

Tech Jacket, issues 1-3, will all be available exclusively for one week on www.imagecomics.com, before going live across all digital platforms. All three issues will be available simultaneously in 2014.
