Save Our Schmuck: Benefit and Campaign to Help Seth Kushner Announced

kushner 2Comic book creator and acclaimed photographer Seth Kushner has been riding a pretty horrifying roller coaster over these last few months.

First there was the high of a successful Kickstarter campaign for his Schmuck graphic novel, that was followed, just four days later, by a Leukemia diagnosis that has put him into the hospital and away for his son for long periods of time.

I spoke to Kushner back in mid-June for Den of Geek US just after he had gotten home and he had a good head about this hell that he and his loved ones had been dragged through. He was thinking about work, thankful for the support of the comic book community, delighted to be home and looking forward to a bone marrow transplant. A couple of months later and Kushner is, unfortunately, still waiting and back in the hospital. According to a recent update on his Facebook page, though, Kushner said he feels like he’s “turning a corner” after a rough patch.

Despite that good bit of news, though, the realities are that being sick comes with a hefty financial burden, and so the comic book community is again rallying around Kushner with a benefit at Union Hall in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday August 26th.

Here are some pertinent details. For more, check out the event page on Facebook.

Save Our Schmuck: Bone Marrow Benefit for Seth Kushner

Featuring: Live comix reading, music and comedy featuring: Molly Crabapple, Douglas Rushkoff, Dean Haspiel, Akim Funk Buddha, JahFurry, Josh Neufeld, Sticks and Stones and others.

If you’re unable to attend the event, please do hop over to the GoFundMe page that has been set up to collect donations to assist Seth and his family as they fight through this together. As the description on that page says, there are medical expenses that aren’t covered by insurance and in that Seth is a freelancer, his inability to take on jobs means that the family is missing his income right now. Give what you can and, almost as importantly, share this article/or that page so that others can rally and support this worthy effort.
