Review – Five Ghosts: The Haunting of Fabian Gray #1 (of 5)
After a tragic encounter with an artifact known as “The Dreamstone,” infamous treasure hunter Fabian Gray was possessed by five literary ghosts and has been granted access to their unique abilities.
Join writer Frank J. Barbiere and artist Chris Mooneyham for an exciting 2013 debut as they introduce you to a unique world full of action, black magic, exotic locales, and literary allusion!
The first issue of the series is an interesting one and the comic has a cool five that I really enjoyed. Part pulp fun, part literary fantasy, the series is very unique in its plot and characters.
Most importantly the comic is fun. A lot of fun.
The series feels a bit like an Indiana Jones adventure, but in this case, the main character can tap into ghosts that gives him special abilities, an almost video game aspect.
The story is action and mystery as we learn about Fabian Gray and his abilities. We’re just thrown in there and find out about it in a nice action sequence that has some great pacing. The rest of the story is really setting up what’s coming up as well as some of the issues Fabian will deal with. It’s all solid and interesting enough I can’t wait to see what comes next.
The art too is a great mix. It fits the storytelling well and has a pulp feel that fits the modern take on these classic types of stories.
Overall, the series is one I went into not expect much, and came out blown away. It’s fun, entertaining and action packed, just like how I like my pulp adventures.
