Neil Gaiman, Marc Bernardin, and Shawn Martinbrough team to adapt Anansi Boys to comics

Neil Gaiman’s award-winning novel, Anansi Boys, is getting a comic adaptation from Dark Horse Comics. Adapted by writer Marc Bernardin, the series will also feature art by Shawn Martinbrough, colors by Chris Sotomayor, and letters by Jim Campbell. The first issue will have a main cover illustrated by David Mack and two variants by Martinbrough and Denys Cowan, respectively.

“Fat” Charlie Nancy leads a boring life as a boring Londoner until he discovers two things: That his recently deceased father was, in fact, Anansi, the trickster god of African folklore, and that he has a twin brother he’s never met. All of this kicks off a reality-spanning odyssey of sibling rivalry, jealous deities, and one poor soul who’ll realize that being a god is more trouble than it’s worth.

Anansi Boys #1 (of 8) arrives in comic shops on June 26, 2024. It is now available to pre-order at your local comic shop for $3.99.

Neil Gaiman’s Dead Boy Detectives goes from Max to Netflix

Warner Bros. Discovery continues to spread its original programming around most likely to close the gap of its debt from the merger and the latest example is the comic turned television show Dead Boy Detectives. Originally planned for HBO Max (now Max), the series is a go at Netflix.

Dead Boy Detectives is based on a DC Comics series with characters created by Neil Gaiman. Gaiman’s beloved creation of The Sandman, also a comic series published by DC, also aired on Netflix to praise. Dead Boy Detectives‘ move to the streaming platform makes sense as fans of The Sandman would likely be interested in this series as well. It’ll be much easier to recommend this show to those viewers and get them to come back.

Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives. Meet Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), “the brains” and “the brawn” behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency. Teenagers born decades apart who find each other only in death, Edwin and Charles are best friends and ghosts… who solve mysteries. They will do anything to stick together: including escaping evil witches, Hell, and Death herself. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases.

Dead Boy Detectives will run for 8 episodes and is part of its “Sandman universe.” While no specific premiere date has been announced, the series is expected to debut in 2024.

Underrated: Snow, Glass, Apples

This is a column that focuses on something or some things from the comic book sphere of influence that may not get the credit and recognition it deserves. Whether that’s a list of comic book movies, ongoing comics, or a set of stories featuring a certain character. The columns may take the form of a bullet pointed list, or a slightly longer thinkpiece – there’s really no formula for this other than whether the things being covered are Underrated in some way.

This week: Snow, Glass Apples.

Snow Glass Apples

We all know the story of Snow White at this point. Whether that’s from the Disney version, the original Grimm Brothers story, or one of the other iterations released over the years, I would be surprised if you didn’t have some level of familiarity with the story, so I won’t bother to recap or copy and paste a synopsis here because it’s ultimately a moot point.

Neil Gaiman clearly assumes the same, as Snow, Glass, Apples builds upon that innate knowledge of the fairytale by telling the story from the perspective of the Evil Queen. Originally conceived as a short story in 1994, the book I read this morning was adapted from that story, and fleshed out with illustrations by the fantastically talented Colleen Doran.

I’m not entirely sure if I’d classify this as a graphic novel or an illustrated novel, and ultimately it’s a moot point because I enjoyed the shit out of how the words and art interplay across the page.

There’s more of a classic art style to the book, and while it wouldn’t be my cup of tea in, say, a Wolverine story, it’s perfectly suited to the reinterpretation of a classic fairytale.

I featured Snow, Glass, Apple this week not because I think Neil Gaiman or Colleen Doran are an underrated pair of creators, but because this is the kind of book that can easily be missed or skipped over by those who don’t feel the strike of curiosity as they see the cover, and that’s a shame. This is a solid book, and I’m glad my LCS added it to the list of things that they recommended to me.

Join us next week when we look at something else that is, for whatever reason, Underrated.
