Lion Forge Will Collect Ariel Slamet Ries’ Webcomic Witchy in September

In conjunction with the Lion Forge panel at C2E2, the publisher of “comics for everyone” announced the collection and publication of Ariel Ries’s beloved webcomic, Witchy! Praised around the internet since its first appearance five years ago, Witchy was nominated for the 2015 Ignatz for Outstanding Online Comic, the 2016 DINKy for Outstanding Web Comic, and the Danish “Pingprisen” for Best Online Series in 2017 and 2018.

Now, Lion Forge announces the first long awaited print collection for release just in time for back to school reading!

In the witch kingdom Hyalin, the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. Those that are strong enough are conscripted by the Witch Guard, who enforce the law in peacetime and protect the land during war. However, those with hair judged too long are pronounced enemies of the kingdom, and annihilated. This is called a witch burning

Witchy is an ongoing webcomic about the young witch Nyneve, who is haunted by the death of her father and the threat the Witch Guard poses to her own life. When conscription rolls around, Nyneve has a choice to make; join the institution complicit in her father’s death, or stand up for her ideals?

Witchy is updated online every Tuesday and Friday, with the print edition to be solicited in the July-dated PREVIEWS catalog for release in September.

Lion Forge Announces Army of One at C2E2

Lion Forge continues to ramp up its 2019 line of creator-owned comic book series with concepts every bit as original and unique as the creators behind them. Today, in conjunction with the Lion Forge panel at C2E2 in Chicago, the company unveiled Army of One, an all-new series launching in October!

Created by New York Times Bestselling Writer Tony Lee and Yishan Li, and colored by Bryan Valenza, Army Of One is a story of friendship, sisterhood in a fight against unsurmountable odds, with a few twists and turns along the way.

Seventeen year old Carrie Taylor always knew she was different to the other students, but when she’s saved from nightmarish creatures by doppelgängers of herself, other ‘Carries’ from alternate dimensions, worlds and timelines, she learns the horrifying truth – that she is one of a thousand shattered shards of Sister Fortune, a great Mystic from another dimension; scattered into the multiverse after an apocalyptic battle with her greatest rival, Brother Havoc.

Now, after a millennia of constant death and rebirth, the shards of Sister Fortune are locked in an endless war against each other. In the midst of this, a small band of rebels band together, attempting to unify a force of thirteen doppelgängers, all with the aim of stopping Brother Havoc from finally taking over all of the Multiverses.

But is Carrie one of these shattered shards – or is she something new? And when she learns the truth about her heritage, which side will she choose?

Army of One will be solicited in the August-dated PREVIEWS catalog for release in October, offered to retailers in a fully returnable standard comic format, priced at $3.99.

ECCC 2019: Lion Forge Announces At the End of Your Tether by Adam Smith, V.V. Glass, and Hilary Jenkins

Lion Forge kicked off day two of Emerald City Comic Con with the announcement of At the End of Your Tether, an all-new original series from Adam Smith, V.V. Glass, and Hilary Jenkins, set to debut this June!

It’s 1997 and Ludo is heartbroken. Arlo was the only real bond he had made in a stiff military upbringing. But since a move to a different air base led to their breakup, Ludo has been acting out—fights in school, skipping classes… He feels directionless now, and it’s beginning to weigh on him.

News of a trip back to their former home means that he will have to face Arlo at some point, so to ease his nerves, he gives her a quick phone call. Big laughs and a familiar sort of cadence in her voice don’t just instantly calm him down — they make him excited to see her. But when his family shows up at the base the next day, they find out Arlo has been missing…for a week.

Ludo can’t figure it all out. He had only spoken to her the night before. Why didn’t she say anything about being in danger? Where the hell is she? Ludo sees an opportunity to redeem himself and takes it upon himself to find her. It’s the first time since leaving that he feels he has a purpose; something he can fix.

But as Ludo gets further into the investigation, and details of her disappearance begin to surface, he starts to question how well everyone on base, in town, and even he really knew her. Gone without a trace, the girl he once knew everything about has now become a mystery. Where is Arlo Quinones?

The three-issue limited series features a brand-new expanded 48-page reading experience at a value price of $5.99 and is being offered to retailers as fully returnable. This is the second series in Lion Forge’s new double issue format, which debuts with Palle Schmidt’s Stiletto!

Gail Simone Give Catalyst Prime Seven Days

Two years ago, “The Event” rocked Free Comic Book Day, and emerged as one of the most talked about titles of that first Saturday in May. This was the introduction of the Catalyst Prime Universe, a new seven-title superhero universe built around genuine representation in comics, hinging on a cosmic event distributing powers to characters from all walks of life.

Now, legendary comic book scribe and Catalyst Prime Universe architect Gail Simone unleashes Catalyst Prime: Seven Days; a series that will unite the heroes of the CPU for seven issues that count down the days of a week that may be the final one in the history of humanity.

Lorena Payan was the first to realize a meteor was hurtling towards Earth two years ago. Now, she’s the first to realize the Earth is in danger once more from something equally cosmic but far more sinister. As a mystery figure dubbed, the Obsidian Men, begin appearing silently all over the globe our heroes Noble, Summit, and Accell join together to investigate, kicking off this seven-issue series.

Catalyst Prime: Seven Days is written by Gail Simone, with art by José Luís, and will be solicited in Diamond’s May dated PREVIEWS catalog, and on shelves of finer comic book shops everywhere in July.

Lion Forge Reveals the Release Date and Cover for Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu’s Mooncakes

Following this past weekend’s American Library Association Midwinter conference in Seattle, WA, Lion Forge has announced Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu’s Mooncakes will be released in print for the first time in October of 2019. The series is a queer Chinese-America fantasy romance.

Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers’ bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.

One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.

Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

Mooncakes began online in 2015 and has been updated on the first and fifteenth of each month since. Lion Forge first announced its publication in 2017, and today reveals both this much anticipated collection’s brand-new cover and publication date of October 2, 2019 in comic shops, and October 15 in bookstores. Mooncakes will resume online on February 14, with pages uploaded weekly ahead of the print release this fall.

Underrated: Comics Not In Diamond’s Top 100 For November ’18

This is a column that focuses on something or some things from the comic book sphere of influence that may not get the credit and recognition it deserves. Whether that’s a list of comic book movies, ongoing comics, or a set of stories featuring a certain character. The columns may take the form of a bullet pointed list, or a slightly longer thinkpiece – there’s really no formula for this other than whether the things being covered are Underrated in some way. This week: Comics not in Diamond’s top 100 sellers for November

This week we’re going to be looking at a list of comics that are all pretty good, but don’t get the attention that they deserve. Now I’m not even going to pretend to have a definitively exhaustive list of underrated comics here, because we’re hoping  that you decide to check at least one of these series out next time you’re looking for something new either online or at your LCS, and giving you a huge list to check out would be counter productive to that. Instead, you’ll find four to six comics that are worth your attention that failed to crack the top 100 in sales. The only hard stipulation for this week: not one of the comics made it into the top 100 for July’s comic sales, according to Comichron, which is why they’re Underrated.

Catalyst Prime: Accell #10 (Lion Forge)
October Sales Rank/Units Sold: 370/1,631
Why You Should Read It: A satirical take on superheroes and serialized stories, this series has a lot more depth than you would first think. With the ending of the first arc in this issue, you’ve only got four to catch up on before the fifth issue hits this month.

Low Road West  #3 (Image)
October Sales Rank/Units Sold: 463/1,609
Why You Should Read It:
A nuclear war that destroyed part of the US is only the beginning for this series, which is effectively a series of familiar tropes done so very well in every way possible. A very engaging and enjoyable read.

Shuri #1 (Marvel)
October Sales Rank/Units Sold:336/1,982
Why You Should Read It:
I really hope that this comic has landed at this place on the sales chart because of its release late in the month and not because people ignored it. Shuri #1 is worth checking out – if nothing else at least read the first issue.

Quantum And Woody #12 (Valiant)
October Sales Rank/Units Sold: 262/3,960
Why You Should Read It:
Perhaps one of the best comics  to illustrate what it means to be a superhero, and the effect that even one’s presence can have on the neighborhoods under a hero’s protection. THe final issue of the series, but a great candidate for my comic of the year.

Ducktales #14 (IDW)
October Sales Rank/Units Sold: 238/5,191
Why You Should Read It:
Because it’s frigging Ducktales.

.

Unless the comics industry ceases any and all publication look for a future installment of Underrated to cover more comics that aren’t cracking the top 100.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Aquaman/Justice League: Drowned Earth #1 (DC Comics) – The mini-event crossover between Justice League and Aquaman has been fun in that disaster film sort of way and we’re excited to see how it wraps up because it feels like there’s a lot of ground to cover with just one issue.

Dead Man Logan #1 (Marvel) – Logan is dying… again. But, you know what? When the issue is this good we’re good with it. A solid start to this epic event.

Hellboy and the BPRD 1956 #1 (Dark Horse) – A new Hellboy adventure? Yeah, we’re in. Especially as we wait for the new film.

Heroes in Crisis #3 (DC Comics) – Who did it!? We want to know and this series has us sucked in to see how the mystery plays out.

Hex Wives #2 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – An exploration of the patriarchy with witches… yeah, we’re sold. The first issue was great, we’re expecting the same with the second.

Ironheart #1 (Marvel) – The first issue is a lot of fun as RiRi takes the spotlight and begins to stand out from under various shadows. A fantastic first issue that’s perfect for new readers and long time fans.

Marvel Action: Spider-Man #1 (IDW Publishing/Marvel) – Marvel goes all-ages through IDW?! Marvel has been farming out various aspects of their comics and the latest has us intrigued.

Monarchs #1 (Scout Comics) – Four young geniuses are tasked with discovering and instituting an ideal method of leadership to make a utopian society that the inhabitants wish to create. Um, sold.

Old Lady Harley #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue caught us off guard as to how much fun it was. So, we’re expecting more of that with the second.

Quincredible #1 (Lion Forge Comics) – Quinton, a high school sophomore, is looking to live his best life by moonlighting as a superhero. The catch? His power is invulnerability . . . and that’s the only power he has. Sounds interesting to us!

The Warning #1 (Image Comics) – An extraterrestrial threat emerges and must be stopped. We’re always game for good sci-fi action.
