Garters & Ghouls Now A Digital-Only iPhone Comic

Official Press Release

First series based on hit iPhone game offers all-new stories

San Diego, CA (March 25, 2010) – IDW Publishing continues to forge ahead in the world of digital comics and today expand the company’s offerings with a brand new, digital-only comic. Garters & Ghouls is based on the hot action game by Namco Networks, named one of the thirty must-haves for the iPhone and iPod touch, in which players command the not-too-dead Marie Dupois as she does battle against the evil Thrum and its legion of monstrous creatures.

[Garters & Ghouls iPhone]“We’re very excited to release the first digital comic in our partnership with Namco and Garters & Ghouls is a perfect concept to bring from games to comics,” stated Jeff Webber, Director of ePublishing at IDW. “The Namco team put so much into the game’s back-story that we have all sorts of interesting ideas to explore. And focusing specifically on an original digital comic allows us to design a storytelling format that works best on the small screen.”

IDW’s Garters & Ghouls comic chronicles The Thrum, a dark force churning under the twisted streets and elaborate architecture of Washington DC. The only thing that stands in its way is a group of outlandish geniuses known as The Society and their all-female squad of undead warriors, The Dead-Butantes. As the forces of darkness threaten to engulf the nation’s capital, one of The Society’s most prominent members, Frederic Farley Farnhan, is far more focused on his daughter’s society debut than the growing danger all around him. Will the whole affair become a coming out party from hell? Unearth the strange and macabre world of Garters & Ghouls with the talented creative team of writer Harold Sipe (Screamland) and artist Kevin Mellon (Hack/Slash, Thirteen Steps).

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with IDW Publishing on our original video game property, Garters & Ghouls.  IDW’s history of marrying the most talented artists and writers in the business to outstanding IP provides a great opportunity for fans to explore the fun, frightening world of Garters & Ghouls in all its spooky glory,” said Chris Lucero, Manager of Business Development and Licensing for Namco Networks.

In the Garters & Ghouls action shooter game, players control Marie as she is summoned to battle the Thrum’s minions and horrors beyond description! Garters & Ghouls features a twisted, gothic world with 25 action-packed levels, providing hours of unique game play. Players help Marie on her quest by unearthing devastating weapons and massive power-ups! With downloadable content the fun never dies!

Garters & Ghouls ($0.99) is now available through the Apple App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch.

ComiXology Adds New Features

ComiXology has quickly established itself is the application to read comics on iPhones.  While some digital distribution channels like the PSP are just launching, ComiXology is already adding new features it’s users can enjoy.  Beginning today, the Comics app launches some new options by offering digital trade paperbacks, as well as new software updates that include story-arc tracking and an option for right-to-left reading.

The company already has more than 700 comics currently available from publishers as diverse as Marvel and Image to Th3rd World Studios and Zenescope. Many of the comics are free or only 99 cents and can be downloaded from right inside the Comics store, without having to visit another website or leave the application. As a result, Comics is the only iPhone comics store to remain in the Top 10 Free Book apps.

ComiXology is also branching out with exclusives including The First Daughter, a new comic from Keenspot, a publisher that formerly used their own iPhone apps but is now switching to the Comics app. The other original comic beginning today for iPhone is X: The Unknown from Id Ego and Tim Smith.

“Story-arc” tracking will allow users to lump together stories that tie together.  For example Marvel’s Civil War or Dark Reign story arcs ran across numerous series.

ComiXology is also pursuing digital distribution outside of the iPhone.  Here’s hoping for one service that allows me to read my purchase across multiple platforms.

Marvel Comics Now Available on iPhone

Following the news that Marvel comics will be available for Sony’s PSP, Marvel comics recently announced their comic library would be available for the Apple iPhone.

Marvel has announced there are now four different apps available that deliver individual issues to iPhone users.

Consumers in many locales have a choice of comic shops in which to buy their comics so we wanted to offer fans the same variety of digital storefronts to be able to purchase and consume Marvel comics,” explained Ira Rubenstein, Executive Vice President, Marvel Digital Media. “It’s all about giving the consumer the best experience possible and the widest possible choice.”

Marvel is pushing new technology as a delivery method for their publications not only with the iPhone and PSP, but also their Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited service.

“As technology grows, the ways fans can consume our comics must expand as well,” Rubenstein said. “We’re very cognizant of that and will continue to explore avenues to offer the widest variety of fun ways for fans to read Marvel comics. Stay tuned for announcements coming soon regarding not only more iPhones apps, but ways to enjoy Marvel digital comics on other devices!”

Now, we just need an Apple tablet to be able to read the comics at full size.
