23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards Comics Nominations Announced

The comic book nominees for the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards have been announced.  The award is for series that portray LGBT characters in a positive way.  This years nominees are:

Outstanding Comic Book
• Avengers: The Children’s Crusade by Allan Heinberg, Marvel
• Batwoman by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman, DC Comics
• Secret Six by Gail Simone, DC Comics
• Veronica Presents: Kevin Keller by Dan Parent, Archie Comics
• X-Factor by Peter David, Marvel Comics

All are great examples of the progressive nature of comics and how this is being portrayed in mainstream comics.  I do also encourage folks to check out Prism Comics and Northwest Press (two examples of many) that primarily produce LGBT comics.  Congrats to all the nominees, all of which I’d be happy to win.

Writer Peter David was announced as a GLAAD Award honoree for his work on Marvel comics’ X-Factor.  The organization announced 25 of this year’s total of 32 media categories.  The remaining awards will be presented at ceremonies to be held in Los Angeles and San Francisco in April and May.

Others recognized include Ricky Martin, the HBO-series True Blood and NBC’s 30 Rock, Anderson Cooper and Russell Simmons.  The prizes were presented by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation on Saturday, during a New York ceremony Saturday night hosted by Bravo’s Andy Cohen.

FogtownIt’s always interesting to see what gets nominated for GLAAD’s Media Awards.  Here’s the nominees for this year’s 22nd annual awards.

Outstanding Comic Book
Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Scott Allie, Brad Meltzer, Joss Whedon (Dark Horse Comics)
Fogtown by Andersen Gabrych (Vertigo/DC Comics)
Veronica by Dan Parent (Archie Comics)
X-Factor by Peter David (Marvel Comics)
Young Avengers: Children’s Crusade by Allan Heinberg (Marvel)

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was also nominated for Outstanding Film: Wide Release.

I’ll let the lack of mention of the artists and the incorrect title for Avengers: Children’s Crusade slide, the awards recognize positive portrayals of gays and lesbians in the media.  I can’t speak for Veronica (which I guess is nominated for the recent inclusion of Archie’s first gay character) or Buffy, the other three I think are solid picks especially Fogtown which was under the radar for comic book fans.

Congrats to everyone nominated.

The GLAAD awards celebrates gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered in popular culture.  This Saturday New York hosted the event.  Detective Comics, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Madame Xanadu, Secret Six and X-Factor were nominated in the comic book category.  And the winner was…. Detective Comics.

The series written by Greg Rucka and published by DC comics features Batwoman and her alter ego Kate Kane who is a lesbian.  Bleeding Cool has an interesting post on the history of the character and some of the controversy surrounding her.

Congrats to Rucka and DC.
