Where the Data Ranks 2017’s Comic Book Films. Spider-Man Passes Dawn of Justice

2017 feels like it’s shaping up to be a wild ride for comic adaptions. We look at who the real winners and losers are for this year’s comic films.

We’re in the holding pattern until the next two big “comic” films, Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League debut. But, this year’s releases are still bringing in the dollars.

We missed this last week, but Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of the two big comic stories of the year. A late boost has seen the film surge in the rankings and the film is the top worldwide grossing comic adaptation of the year so far. The film has also passed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the numbers as of now are very similar domestically and internationally. The film now ranks as #8 in the all time grossing comic adaptations and is $11.6 million behind Spider-Man 3.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is still only a few weeks into its run and running behind the first film’s domestic run by about $40 million at the same point. It also has a higher budget by about $23 million. It’s unlikely the film will match its predecessor’s success.

Wonder Woman continues to add to its total as it winds down its run. The film has the highest domestic gross of the year and second highest gross/budget.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is slowing down and crossed the $225 million mark. The film is not a success, but it earned more than its budget fueled by the international box office.

Lets compare how the big two comic companies compare for earnings. On average DC films earn $339.7 million domestically while Marvel earns $308.3 million. Internationally, Marvel rules with $476.9 million and DC lags behind with $437.4 million. There’s still work for DC when it comes to the international film market.

Already, the year is an interesting one with three clear successes and a whole lot of mixed otherwise. Wonder Woman, Logan, Spider-Man: Homecomning, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 have done well this year. The LEGO Batman Movie and Smurfs: The Lost Village, and Atomic Blonde are in that debatable area, and ValerianWilson and Ghost in the Shell are generally disappointments. Things aren’t looking good but we’ll see about Kingsman: The Golden CircleMarvel’s Inhumans… got no clue and tough to debate since it’s a television show primarily with a limited film engagement.

Here’s where this year’s comic films stand as far as the actual numbers. With a new film opening the averages have dipped.

Total Domestic Gross: $1.807 billion
Total International Gross: $2.664 billion
Worldwide Gross: $4.471 billion

2017 feels like it’s shaping up to be a wild ride for comic adaptions. We look at who the real winners and losers are for this year’s comic films.

This past week has been pretty quiet when it comes to comic adaptations. The latest film to debut, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, has been mixed as it’s running behind the previous film’s domestic run and ahead of its foreign run. So… a wash? It also keeps up the trend of the foreign box office saving this year’s movie industry.

Spider-Man: Homecoming continues to get a late boost and is the top grossing comic adaptation of the year passing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and then some. The film has crossed $700 million when it comes to its budget and worldwide earnings and has a 5x multiplier. The big question is if it’ll cross $900 million at the box office.

Wonder Woman continues to impress as it winds down its run. It’s still the highest earning domestic earner for a comic film this year so far. It has a 5.51x multiplier of its budget and earnings.

Atomic Blonde will fall short of $100 million and will be a moderate success.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is slowing down and will likely end around $225 million as long as there’s no more debuts.

Lets compare how the big two comic companies compare for earnings. On average DC films earn $339.7 million domestically while Marvel earns $308.3 million. Internationally, Marvel rules with $476.9 million and DC lags behind with $437.3 million. There’s still work for DC when it comes to the international film market.

2017 feels like it’s shaping up to be a wild ride for comic adaptions. We look at who the real winners and losers are for this year’s comic films.

A new comic adaptation has hit theaters this past weekend as Kingsman: The Golden Circle debuted with an impressive $39 million domestically which increases on the original film’s debut. Worldwide, the film has already earned $100.2 million on a $104 million budget.

Spider-Man: Homecoming continues to get a late boost and is now the top grossing comic adaptation of the year passing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and then some. Where I had the film as debatable, the late boost at the foreign box office has put the film in the win column for the year.

Wonder Woman continues to impress as it winds down its run. It’s still the highest earning domestic earner for a comic film this year so far.

Atomic Blonde is approaching $100 million and will be a moderate success.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is making a comeback and has finally crossed the threshold so that its worldwide total is greater than its budget. Still not good, but also not a disaster of Titanic proportion.

Lets compare how the big two comic companies compare for earnings. On average DC films earn $339.5 million domestically while Marvel earns $308.3 million. Spider-Man: Homecoming continues to get a late boost in its run seeing a $36 million jump over the past week that has the film now just $2 million behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to become the top grossing comic film of 2017 so far. The film has seen almost 62% of its earnings come from the foreign box office continuing this year’s narrative that the foreign box office rules the year.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the big news this week with its China debut. The film saw a massive boost that has it going from a debatable success to an actual one. The movie is now $30 million above Spider-Man film averages after getting an influx of $70.8 million from China.

Wonder Woman continues to impress and is now the fifth highest grossing superhero film domestically.

Where the Data Ranks 2017’s Comic Book Films. Inhumans Debuts at IMAX.

2017 feels like it’s shaping up to be a wild ride for comic adaptions. We look at who the real winners and losers are for this year’s comic films.

Marvel’s Inhumans debuted this past weekend earning $1.5 million domestically and $1.1 million internationally. This is a tough one to include, but I’m going to, as it’s a hybrid television show and movie produced by IMAX, Marvel, and ABC. It’ll be included in the totals for now even though there’s no budget to figure everything out. That may change in the future and be treated like other special releases from previous years.

The big news is that Wonder Woman continues to impress passing $400 million at the foreign box office. The movie is the top earning movie domestically for DC’s movie universe by a solid $78 million (and counting). The film however is third internationally behind both Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad and likely won’t pass either. It’s the second highest earning DC movie worldwide. Wonder Woman is also the top earning comic film domestically for the year so far.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is at $324.1 million domestically, and with its $422.1 million, the film has earned $746.2 million worldwide. The film has now passed Suicide Squad worldwide. While the film has done better than average domestically for a Spider-Man film it lags internationally.

Atomic Blonde is at $89.8 million worldwide. The film has a 2.99 multiplier which is not bad, especially for a rough year at the box office.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is at $863.1 million worldwide. It’ll settle around $864 million before it’s done in the next few weeks.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is making a comeback and stands at $172.8 million on a $177.2 million budget. The film is almost even with its budget which isn’t good, but it’s not the world class disaster it looked like, just a disaster.

Lets compare how the big two comic companies compare for earnings. On average DC films earn $338.9 million domestically while Marvel earns $308.3 million. Internationally, Marvel rules with $476.9 million and DC lags behind with $436.0 million. There’s still work for DC when it comes to the international film market.

Where the Data Ranks 2017’s Comic Book Films. Wonder Woman Crosses $400 million at the Foreign Box Office

2017 feels like it’s shaping up to be a wild ride for comic adaptions. We look at who the real winners and losers are for this year’s comic films.

The big news is that Wonder Woman continues to impress passing $400 million at the foreign box office. The movie is the top earning movie domestically for DC’s movie universe by a solid $76 million (and counting). The film however is third internationally behind both Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad and likely won’t pass either. It’s the second highest earning DC movie worldwide. Wonder Woman is also the top earning comic film domestically for the year so far.

Wonder Woman crosses $400 million at the foreign box office.

Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $4.7 million over the week to bring its domestic total to $318.8 million, and with its $418.2 million, the film has earned $737.0 million worldwide. That’s about $13 million over the past week. The film has now passed the original Spider-Man for international earnings. While the film has done better than average domestically for a Spider-Man film it lags internationally.

Atomic Blonde added about $7 million over the past week to bring its worldwide total to $80.9 million. The film has a 2.7 multiplier which is not bad, especially for a rough year at the box office.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 added $400,000 to its overall total over the week which is about what it earned last week. The film sits at $862.8 million and will wind up between $863 and $864 million before it’s done.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets added $17 million to its worldwide total over the week bringing it to $132.9 million which is still far short of its $177.2 million budget. The film is still a disaster but not quite the trainwreck it once was.

Lets compare how the big two comic companies compare for earnings. On average DC films earn $338.2 million domestically while Marvel earns $308.3 million. Internationally, Marvel rules with $476.9 million and DC lags behind with $435.1 million. There’s still work for DC when it comes to the international film market.

Where the Data Ranks 2017’s Comic Book Films. Wonder Woman Crosses $800 million.

2017 feels like it’s shaping up to be a wild ride for comic adaptions. We look at who the real winners and losers are for this year’s comic films.

The big news is that Wonder Woman continues to impress passing $800 million at the box office worldwide. The film is $4 million short of crossing the $400 million mark at the foreign box office. It may pull that off still. The movie has earned Wonder Woman is the top earning movie domestically for DC’s movie universe. The film however is third internationally behind both Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad and likely won’t pass either. It’s the second highest earning DC movie worldwide.

Wonder Woman crosses $800 million worldwide. The most successful film of the DC movie universe.

Spider-Man: Homecoming earned $4.3 million to bring its domestic total to $314.1 million, and with its $410.8 million, the film has earned $724.9 million worldwide. That’s about $22 million over the past week. The film has now passed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for worldwide earnings, but is far below the average of all of the Spider-Man films released to date. This film will be debated as to its success. It’s the middle of the pack when it comes to domestic earnings but due to it dragging at the international box office the film is the second lowest earner worldwide for Spider-Man films.

Atomic Blonde added $2.2 million to its total for a domestic total of $47.2 million and $73.2 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. That’s an increase of about $12 million over the week.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 added $185,000 to its total to bring that to $389.2 million and $862.3 million worldwide. That’s a gain of about $400,000 over the past week. That’s the fifth highest grossing Marvel film (not adjusted).

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets didn’t make it in the weekend box office roundup but earned $500,000 domestically and about $24 million at the foreign box office over the past week. The film is still far short of its budget and unlikely to make it back.

Lets compare how the big two comic companies compare for earnings. On average DC films earn $337.1 million domestically while Marvel earns $308.3 million. Internationally, Marvel rules with $476.9 million and DC lags behind with $433.8 million. There’s still work for DC when it comes to the international film market.

2017 feels like it’s shaping up to be a wild ride for comic adaptions. We look at who the real winners and losers are for this year’s comic films.

The big news is that Wonder Woman continues to impress passing $400 million at the domestic box office, just $500,000 short, and it’s $5.1 million short of $400 million internationally. Wonder Woman is the top earning movie domestically for DC’s movie universe. The film however is third internationally behind both Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad and likely won’t pass either. It’s the second highest earning DC movie worldwide.

Wonder Woman crosses $400 million domestically. The best of the DC movie universe.

Atomic Blonde in its third weekend dropped to tenth place adding $4.6 million to its total. So far, the film has earned $61.8 million worldwide but in three weeks it has passed both Ghost in the Shell and Valerian domestically.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets continues to struggle standing at $90 million with a $177 million budget. The film will need a miracle from here on out.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is an interesting film when it comes to whether it’s a winner or loser. The film has earned $702.1 million worldwide but that’s dead last when it comes to Spider-Man films. It’s fourth when it comes to domestic (not adjusted for inflation). When we do adjust for inflation it’s fifth out of sixth. When it’s all done, the film will likely wind up in the middle of the pack when it comes to domestic earnings but be at the end of the pack for worldwide earnings. The film did pass Wonder Woman when it comes to international earnings emphasizing Warner Bros. issues at the foreign box office.

Lets compare how the big two comic companies compare for earnings. On average DC films earn $337.1 million domestically while Marvel earns $308.3 million.
