BOOM!, Peter Dinklage, Netflix, and Matt Reeves Team Up for a Feature Version of Last Sons of America

Last Sons of America

BOOM! Studios, Peter Dinklage, Netflix, and Matt Reeves are coming together for a feature version of Last Sons of America by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Matthew Dow Smith.

Dinklage will start in the film that’s set in a not too distant feature where Americans can no longer conceive children which have become a valuable commodity around the globe. The story follows two brothers, Jackie and Julian (Dinklage), who operate as adoption agents in Colombia. There they secure deals with families willing to give up their children for a “better life” in America. Things spiral out of control dragging the brothers into a dark mystery about the world’s status quo.

Josh Mond will direct and is adapting, while additional casting is still being worked on. Producing are Reeves and Adam Kassan for 6th & Idaho, Dinklage and David Ginsberg for Estuary Films, and Ross Richie and Stephen Christy for BOOM! Executive producers are 6th & Idaho’s Rafi Crohn and BOOM!’s Adam Yoelin.

6th & Idaho and BOOM! are also in pre-production on adapting another comic series, Mouse Guard, for Fox.

20th Century Fox Options Lumberjanes

Lumberjanes_v1_coverBOOM! Studios has announced that their series Lumberjanes has been optioned by 20th Century Fox to bring the comic series to the screen as a live-action movie. BOOM! Studios will produce the film, led by Founder and Chief Executive Officer Ross Richie and President of Development Stephen Christy. Senior Vice President of Film Adam Yoelin will co-produce.

The Eisner and GLAAD Media Award-nominated Lumberjanes was co-created by BOOM! Studios Editor Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, and New York Times Best Selling web cartoonist Noelle Stevenson, with main series artist Brooke Allen. The series focuses on five, rad, butt-kicking best pals determined to have an awesome summer together…and they’re not going to let a magical quest or an array of supernatural critters get in their way! As part of BOOM!’s partnership model, the creators will share equally in all aspects of the publisher’s first-look deal with Fox.

The news has caused the first trade paperback of the series to sell out again, sending it into a fifth printing. So far over 65,000 copies of the trade have been sold.

BOOM! Expands its Executive Team

We’ve been on the BOOM! Studios bandwagon for quite a while. The company is making some moves by expanding it’s executive team with one hire and one promotion. Stephen Christy, who was the editor-in-chief of Archaia Entertainment (BOOM! purchased the publisher in 2013), has been named president of development. Christy will oversee the film, television, web, and animation projects for the company. That includes all of the company’s brands, BOOM!, Archaia, KaBOOM! and BOOM! Box. Christy will report to BOOM! founder and CEO Ross Richie.

The company has made a hire as well. Adam Yoelin will be the senior vp film. He will focus on the numerous movies in the pipeline for the company. Last year, the comic publisher saw the first film based on one of their properties debut, 2 Guns. Yoelin will report to Christy.

The comic publisher has numerous projects in development including Rust, an adaptation of Archaia’s Royden Lepp graphic novel that has Carlos Saldanha attached to direct and set up at Fox. Fox 2000 is adapting Aline Brosh McKenna’s graphic novel Rochester. The company also has Day Men set up at Universal, while Unthinkable is housed at Fox TV.
