Official Press ReleaseCollector's Paradise

Collector’s paradise DEFIES THE BAD ECONOMY BY OPENING A SECOND LOCATION AND CELEBRATES COMICS WITH FREE COMIC BOOK DAY ON MAY 7

San Fernando Valley’s Leading Retail Comic Book Store Welcomes Industry Creators to help promote launch of the new location and Free Comic Book Day, a day of Celebration of the Comic Books Industry!

PASADENA, Calif., April 30, 2011 – Collector’s Paradise Comics & Gallery, San Fernando Valley’s Premiere pop culture store, is excited to announce that it has purchased the famous Pasadena hobby landmark, Comic Odyssey, and has turned it into the second location of the company’s store brand, Collector’s Paradise.

Everyone knows that with the current economy, consumers are spending less than before on their hobbies.  Collector’s Paradise believes that as the economy changes for the better, the comic book industry will recover and with the proliferation of comic-based movies, a whole new audience will continue to grow for our products. “Opening a new location has always been a dream of mine, and bringing more business to such a fine area as Pasadena is an exciting opportunity we just could not pass up”, said Edward Greenberg, one of the co-owners of Collector’s Paradise.

The timing of the opening of the new store could not have been better, as it gives Collector’s Paradise the opportunity to unveil the new location during the most exciting day of the year for the whole industry, Free Comic Book Day.  An annual event that happens every year on the first Saturday in May, Free Comic Book Day has become the most attended day of the year for most stores participating in the celebration. This year, on May 7, Collector’s Paradise will present to its customers a very exciting  event, that will showcase the store’s commitment to continue being not just a retail store, but a “Destination” where consumers come to meet the industry’s finest creators face to face.

On May 7th, Collector’s Paradise is presenting one of their best line-ups of comic book creators to date, including:

Len Wein – creator of such characters as Wolverine, Swamp Thing, Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus. As an Editor, Len oversaw such books as Crisis on Infinite Earths and Watchmen. Len is currently writing DC Universe Legacies. Len will be on hand from 11am to 2pm to sign for fans.

JT Krul – a bright rising star at DC Comics. Having started at Aspen Comics, where he took over writing duties from Michael Turner on books like Fathom and Soulfire, this past year, JT has left his mark on Green Arrow and Teen Titans, an upcoming Flashpoint tie-ins, in addition to his first creator-owned title, Mindfield. JT will be on hand from 3pm to 5pm to sign for fans.

David Petersen is known all around as the creator /artist / writer of the amazing All Ages book, Mouse Guard, from Archaia. The book has won all types of awards and is considered a shining example of a graphic novel for fans of ALL ages. David will be on hand from 4pm to 6pm to sign for fans.

Jim McCann‘s latest graphic novel, The Return of the Dapper Men, from Archaia, has been a huge critical hit and commercial success, selling out the whole first printing in a matter of days.  His Marvel work, Avengers: The Reunion and Hawkeye & Mockingbird, among others, has also received some high praise.  Jim will be on hand from 4pm to 6pm to sign for fans.

Mark Sable‘s career in comics started with creator-owned Grounded, Fearless, and Hazed. He’s done some DC work including a Teen Titans Cyborg mini-series. His original series, Unthinkable, from Boom Studios! was too close to real life for TSA Agents, and right now he’s working on a new series, called Graveyard of Empires, for Image Comics. Mark will be on hand from 11 to 2 to sign for fans.

Sheldon Mitchell has done a great deal of work for Top Cow Studios, including Freshmen Summer Vacation Special, and his current run on The Darkness. Sheldon will be on hand from 11am to 2pm to sign and sketch for fans.

Rick Basaldua has been an artist/inker for many years on many Top Cow books, including the hot Artifacts mini-series, as well as Rising Stars, Pilot Season, and Utopia at Marvel Comics. Rick will be on hand from 11am to 2pm to sign and sketch for fans.

Tess Fowler is a rising star. So far her works has been featured in Michelle Obama Year One, Wonderland Annual 2010, Grimm Fairy Tales and Charmed, as well as Heavy Metal Magazine. Tess will be on hand from 3pm to 5pm to sign and sketch for fans.

Kids are a big focus of Collector’s Paradise’ effort on FCBD.  The event will feature costumed characters for the kids to take photographs with, as well as several thousand kid-friendly comic books given away to all fans in attendance.

In addition to the free comics, Collector’s Paradise Pasadena will hold their biggest sale of the year, especially on comic book back issues, which will be sold at incredible price of just 50 Cents each, or $50 for an approx. 300 count box. The is the biggest reduction of price for back issues in the history of the store and will only happen on that day.

The event will be held at Collector’s Paradise Pasadena from 11am to 7:00pm, with creator signings and character appearances throughout the day.

Collector’s Paradise Pasadena is located at 319 S. Arroyo Parkway Unit 4, at the corner of Del Mar, in Old Town Pasadena.  For additional information, please contact Edward Greenberg, owner of Collector’s Paradise @ 626-577-6694 (business) or 818-326-2517 (cell), or at store@comicsandcards.net

Collector’s Paradise Comics & Gallery has been a mainstay in the Southern California Comic Book scene since 1994. In recent years, the store has focused on offering their customers an exceptional experience that goes beyond collecting comic books, from monthly creator appearances, to the proprietary online subscription manager software, to the recently-opened Art Gallery. The store’s future plans include many new and very different ways to experience the comic book culture. For the last two years, Collector’s Paradise was picked by fans as the Best Comic Book Store in Los Angeles County, according to an online poll done by Fox LA.

Comic Book Weekly Reviews – 4/20/11

Bookmark and Share

It’s a solid week of books as an average size of releases were found in my pull box. There’s some top notch titles and quite a few of my favorites.

Monthly Comics

Avengers #12 – The Avengers take on Parker Robbins and the issue with the Infinity Gauntlet is resolved.  But now, what will happen with the gems?  The ending had a twist I wasn’t expecting but I guess I should have seen coming.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.25

Avengers: Academy #12 – While overall I think the battle with Korvac was pretty lackluster but the final two pages of this comic are very solid.  The series isn’t quite as good as I hoped it would be, but we’ll see where it continues to go.

Story: 7.5 Art: 7 Overall: 7.25

Dark Horse Presents #1 – A thick 80 page comic book showcasing some of the best talent out there, Dark Horse Presents is back and absolutely fantastic.  The various stories are fantastic with a nice variation of stories and art styles.  There’s something here for everyone.  This is an absolute buy that should be on everyone’s pull list.

Story: 10 Art: 10 Overall: 10

DMZ #64 – The political games keep going in part four of Free States Rising.  The ending of this issue is pretty shocking as Brian Wood’s brilliant series continues.  This is one of the most politically relevant pieces of writing of the past decade.

Story: 10 Art: 8.5 Overall: 9.5

Fables #104 – Are the Fable doomed and Mister Dark’s victory assured?  The series has a quiet reflective moment before the big battle, but there’s a bit of family business to take care of before hand.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Generation X #8 – A new mutant alerts the team and they go off to awaken it (or whatever Hope does).  The story and series as a whole is just ok, definitely the weakest of the “X” bunch.

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Green Hornet #15 – A real good issue as the Hornet has doubts after getting Kato injured and killing a bad guy.  It’s a great issue that shows off the quality of this entire series.

Story: 9 Art: 8.75 Overall: 9

Green Lantern #65 – The Green Lantern line of comics needed a kick in the ass with too much build up and some boring stories.  But War of the Green Lanterns has been the nice charge I’ve been waiting for.  The only issue I have is a too convenient plot point in this issue, but that last panel is awesome.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.75 Overall: 8.5

Green Lantern Corps. #59 – The fourth installment of the War of the Green Lanterns hinted at some awesomesauce but this issue stumbles a bit and for some reason seems really short.  It’s a lot of fighting, but overall ho-hum.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 7.75

Invincible Iron Man #503 – The Doc Ock story is rushed and ends and then there’s a lead in to Fear Itself.  The issue is a bridge into that event, but it feels rushed and nothing really fleshed out, just moments and none are particularly good.

Story: 6.75 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7

Iron Man 2.0 #4 – Who is Palmer Addley?  You find out what’s in his real file in this issue and it’s a doozy.  Nick Spencer shows off his amazing writing skills right here.

Story: 9.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 9.25

Thunderbolts #156 – One team is sent on a mission with their new mystical member while another is being put together.  This issue is hit and miss, with the best parts being the new team being put together.

Story: 7.25 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.25

Uncanny X-Force #8 – A solid one-off issue that opens up a whole lot of shit down the road and clearly leads to some of the teasers we’ve seen for the future of this team.  Easily the best “X” book on the market.

Story: 9 Art: 8.75 Overall: 9

Wolverine #8 – Logan fighting for his soul = a horrible storyline.  Thank go it’s over, but then again, I got one false ending already.  Can we please move on from this bad storyline?

Story: 6.5 Art: 7.25 Overall: 6.5

X-Factor #218 – For as good as last issue was, something was off about this one.  Will Guido live or die?  Find out here cause it’s interesting.  Overall the story is missing something and the art is definitely off.  What’s up with everyone’s breasts busting out of their costumes?

Story: 7 Art: 7 Overall: 7

Zombies vs. Robots: Undercity #1 – Yup, it’s more robots and zombies and it’s awesome.  The world is ending the President has ordered the underground city to be opened and humanities hope to be shuffled in.  It’s awesome.

Story: 9 Art: 9 Overall: 9

CBLDF Issues Advisory On Border Searches & Comics

Official Press Release

CBLDF Issues Advisory On Border Searches & Comics

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund today published the advisory document “Legal Hazards of Crossing International Borders with Comic Book Art.” The advisory was created in response to an increasing number of reports from travelers who have been stopped, searched, and/or detained by customs agents because of comic book art they carried in print and electronic forms. CBLDF legal counsel Robert Corn-Revere prepared the advisory for the Fund’s constituents and members.

“Most people do not know that their constitutional rights are not guaranteed, even from U.S. Customs agents, when they cross international borders,” Corn-Revere said. “Their books, papers, laptop computers, and even cell phones are subject to routine search and possible seizure by the government, even without any suspicion of criminal activity. This is important to know in an age when many people carry with them a great deal of highly personal information in electronic form.”

The CBLDF’s advisory shines light on Immigrations and Customs Enforcement policies pertaining to the search of information, and also explains how border searches lack traditional legal protections otherwise afforded to speech. Finally, the document offers suggestions for avoiding intrusive border searches and protecting the safety of your information.

The CBLDF Advisory is available here as a Word document, and here as a PDF file.

About the CBLDF

They have defended dozens of Free Expression cases in courts across the United States, and led important education initiatives promoting comics literacy and free expression. Aronofsky Out As Director Of The Wolverine

Bookmark and Share

Darren Aronofsky won’t be directing the upcoming Wolverine movie sequel The Wolverine because the movie would keep him out of the country too long, away from his family.  In a released statement Aronofsky said:

As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, who have been totally supportive throughout my work on the movie, it became clear that the production of The Wolverine would keep me out of the country for almost a year.

I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again.

In their joint statement with the director, 20th Century Fox continued:

While we are of course disappointed that Darren can’t do The Wolverine, we also understand and respect his reasons.  Having done both The Wrestler and Black Swan with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making The Wolverine.  We will regroup and move forward aggressively.

As a fan, I’m really disappointed as Aronofsky’s The Wrestler and Black Swan are two of my favorite recent movies and I wanted to see what he’d do with a “comic book” movie.  There is no release date for the film and it’s currently being written by Christopher McQuarrie.

Zenescope Plans To Release Barnes & Noble Exclusive Cover

Official Press Release

ZENESCOPE PLANS TO RELEASE BARNES & NOBLE EXCLUSIVE COVER

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans to release a Barnes & Noble promotion exclusively with the national retail chain. Starting February 15th and ending March 15th, 2011, any customer who purchases Zenescope’s THE WAKING Trade Paperback ($12.99 MSRP) through any Barnes & Noble retail location can receive a free limited edition copy of Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tales #58 comic book with an exclusive cover.

Zenescope has recently promoted other books with such giveaways through Spencer’s Gifts. The Spencer’s promotion was so successful that the limited edition comics completely sold out and some buyers soon found their exclusive copies were selling for up to $100 and more on eBay.  “The Spencer’s promotion was a way to push our books at a national retail chain while giving fans a chance to essentially grab a copy of a rare, limited edition prize they couldn’t find anywhere else.” said CEO Joe Brusha, “We know the Barnes & Noble Exclusive will have the same result.  Fans can simply purchase a popular book of ours in THE WAKING and be rewarded with a very limited edition comic that will only increase in value.”   Customers are encouraged to visit Zenescope’s website, download and fill out the Barnes & Noble Exclusive Form, then snail mail, e-mail or fax the form along with their receipt to Zenescope in order to take advantage of this free exclusive offer. Go to www.zenescope.com for more details.

Zenescope Entertainment was founded by Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco in 2005 and has quickly grown into one of the top comic book and graphic novel publishing companies in the world.  Zenescope’s Grimm Fairy Tales and subsequent spinoff series such as Escape From Wonderland, Neverland and The Piper, which put a dark twist on classic fables, are some of the best-selling and longest running original independent comic books on shelves today.   Zenescope’s licensed titles include the on-going, critically acclaimed Charmed series, based off of the long-running popular television series, as well as Se7en and Final Destination, based off of New Line Cinema’s successful film franchises.
