LEGO Ninjago: Shatterspin #1

As war erupts in Ninjago, young champion Garmadon sets off on a quest to discover the truth behind the legend of The Forbidden Five—and a secret power that could turn the tide of the Serpentine War! Can Garmadon resist wielding this forbidden technique—or is corruption the only path toward saving his beloved Ninjago? LEGO Ninjago: Shatterspin #1 kicks off Garmadon’s quest for new power that may turn the tide of battle.

Tri Vuong returns to the world of LEGO Ninjago as both writer and artist, continuing the focus on Garmadon. I don’t know the world of LEGO Ninjago at all, though love LEGOs as a whole. Ninjago was a property that came after I regularly stopped collecting, though I’ve started up again (wee!). So, as a relatively new reader, does LEGO Ninjago: Shatterspin #1 interest me enough to come back and have enough information so I understand what’s going on? The answer to both is yes.

LEGO Ninjago: Shatterspin #1 is a solid introduction that any reader can dive into and enjoy. No knowledge of the world is need and it’s easy to understand what’s going on. There’s an evil force and Garmadon wants to find a new power to stop them. It’s not much more complicated than that and it’s that simplicity that works so well. While there’s a wider world and history, readers need to know absolutely nothing about any of that. Vuong has crafted a story that’s for new readers and longtime fans to appreciate it.

The art by Vuong keeps things as we’d expect. With ink by Riccardo Robaldo, color by K.J. Diaz, and lettering by Pat Brosseau, LEGO Ninjago: Shatterspin #1 has the style of a LEGO comic working well within the constraints of the characters and world. And it works surprisingly well. Though some monsters and the surroundings don’t have too much of a LEGO feel, the characters sport the classic look down to their hands and the accessories they wield. It’s all fun and fun readers can create with their own collections.

LEGO Ninjago: Shatterspin #1 is another solid start for those who are Ninjago fans, enjoy action, or martial arts excitement. Vuong keeps things focused and simple in a good way, delivering a martial arts adventure that’ll suck readers in.
