Review: Syphon #1

When a fast-living EMT is entrusted with the power to sense and siphon pain from others, Sylas is presented with a new purpose: to ease the misery of those around him. But the more he uses this gift, the more it curses him with carrying the burdens of others’ pain. And it soon attracts the attention of mysterious forces who covet the power for themselves, forcing Sylas to decide whether he will continue his mission or revert to his old ways. Syphon #1 kicks off an interesting new series with a dip in fantasy and noir.

Syphon #1 is a promising debut issue from Mohsen Ashraf and Patrick Meaney that merges fantasy with the modern world. Sylas is a hard-working EMT striving to make a difference in a cold, hard world. Yet, that principled work ethic and morality may prove to be his undoing. Something unnaturally empathic has chosen Sylas to be its next host.

The debut is a good one teasing a new world and mythos to explore. We can see Sylas’ slide as this mysterious power takes its root and the pain of others begins to weigh on him. His life begins to suffer and we see the impact in his relationships.

The debut issue is brimming with spectacular artwork from Jeff Edwards. The art is used heavily to hint and tease at the supernatural origin of the power Sylas is given. Along with John Klasiz’s color, the art does an interesting job of balancing the dark nature of the pain Sylas deals with and a neon glow that goes along with his newfound power.

Syphon #1 is a good start mixing a few genres and delivering nice artwork. It’s a debut that does an excellent job of teasing what’s to come through the artwork and giving us a quick run-through of the burden that gets our main character to the next part of his journey.

Blue & Gold #1 (DC Comics) – Booster Gold and Blue Beetle in their own miniseries. That’s all we need to be excited for this one.

Dark Blood #1 (BOOM! Studios) – What if you were given the power to change the course of history? In the 1950s a Black man is given strange new abilities in a society that never wanted him to have any power.

Lunar Ladies #1 (Scout Comics) – A highly advanced society lives on the moon and their peaceful way to live is fractured by a geneticist hell-bent on usurping the queen’s power.

MOM: Mother of Madness #1 (Image Comics) – Actress Emilia Clarke’s new series.

Moon Knight #1 (Marvel) – When it comes to Marvel’s version of Batman, the first issue is solid.

Skybound X #3 (Image Comics) – The series has shown off the variety that Skybound publishes and debuts in each issue. A nice anthology we hope to see more of.

Solo Leveling Vol. 2 (Yen Press) – The first volume was fantastic where dungeon crawling is a profession and one of the worst in the business might actually not be that bad.

Superman and the Authority #1 (DC Comics) – We’ve read it. It’s really good.

Syphon #1 (Image Comics/Top Cow) – An EMT is given the power to siphon pain from others but the more he uses the gift, the more it curses him with the pain of others.

Tales From Harrow County: Fair Folk #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – Cullen Bunn returns to Harrow County with Emily Schnall for a new miniseries. The first series was fantastic so we’re expecting more.

Top Cow and EP1T0ME partner for Comics and Graphic Novels

Top Cow Productions is partnering with EP1T0ME to co-produce and to publish a slate of EP1T0ME comic books and graphic novels, including EP1T0ME’s debut comic book, St. Mercy.

EP1T0ME, founded by Richard Leibowitz in January 2020, develops, produces, and co-publishes primarily single-player, story-driven, single/several session, PC/Console games; its slate includes an even split between license-based and original games; it struck a deal with Top Cow to establish original properties and to market games.

St. Mercy, penned by John Zuur Platten and illustrated by Atilio Rojo, is a tale of vengeful retribution; it pits the Incan Empire against the American West and features two strong, determined young women, both of whom have no choice but to defy authority as they succumb to their destiny.

Writer John Zuur Platten teams up with artist Atilio Rojo for the upcoming action-packed revenge tale, St. Mercy. This all-new, four-issue miniseries kicks off this August from Image Comics and Top Cow. 

A tale of vengeful retribution, St. Mercy pits the Incan Empire against the American West—and features two strong, determined young women who must defy authority and ultimately embrace their destiny. Mercedes Oro is one of the surviving descendants of the Incans who has been charged with protecting a cache of cursed gold used in their child sacrifice rituals. 

But when an outlaw tries to steal the gold for his band of thieves, he unknowingly sets events in motion that will unleash an angry god who is willing to travel through the centuries to have what he desires.

Sins of the past return to haunt in Top Cow’s Cutter Trade Paperback

Television writer Seamus Kevin Fahey, comic writer Robert Napton, and acclaimed horror artists Christian Dibari and Maan House team up for Top Cow’s Cutter trade paperback, which collects issues #1-4 and will be available this October.

What if that kid you and your friends picked on in your youth came back with a vengeance…to kill you and your friends? That dark guilt-ridden fear is at the core of Cutter, a cautionary tale about the sins of your past coming back to haunt you.

Top Cow Has a God Complex in October

Writers Paul Jenkins and Bryan Lie team up with artist Hendry Prasetya for an all-new mystery thriller in God Complex, an ongoing series launching from Image/Top Cow this October.

God Complex is set in the futuristic city of Delphi where a young digital-forensics investigator named Seneca finds himself embroiled in the bizarre murders of three church acolytes. Guided by his cryptic mentor, the Ruler named Hermes, Seneca uncovers a stunning conspiracy and a mystery that will turn his entire world upside down.

God Complex is a unique vision of a digital future powered by mythological gods. It’s the first original toy line-up from Jakarta-based GLITCH. It features sci-fi and high-fashion reimaginings of mythological gods from various beliefs/regions like Greek, Egypt, China, and Japan. The toys first released in 2012 and are available for purchase. God Complex is created by Bryan Lie, who is the GLITCH co-Founder and CEO.

Top Pick: X-O Manowar #3 (Valiant) – Two words: Space Conan. More words: My favourite series from any publisher right now, this is a beautifully illustrated an fantastically written comic.

Rapture #1 (Valiant) – Another Valiant comic written by Matt Kindt? Just take my money.

Vile #2 (Study Group Comics) – Alright so this doesn’t come out this week, and is actually sat in my To-Read pile…. but I have every intention of reading Tyler Landry’s stream of consciousness style of story telling this week.

Top Pick: Victor Lavalle’s Destroyer #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new take on the classic Frankenstein story. I’ve been looking forward to this one for a  while since it sounds like it’ll touch on social issues that are prevalent today giving it all a new spin.

Saucer State #1 (IDW Publishing) – This was an awesome series when that last volume came out through Vertigo. Thankfully we get another conspiracy filled volume. Think the X-Files but the President is involved in the investigation. A solid mix of conspiracy and politics.

Batman/The Shadow #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue I was mixed on, but I’m really excited to see where this second one goes. It’s a team up of two classic characters that works so well together.

East of West #33 (Image Comics) – This series always delivers in a weird mix of the Wild West, political maneuvering and religious fervor.

Samaritan Veritas #1 (Top Cow Productions) – Spinning out of the Postal/Think Tank world of Top Cow is a new series focused on hacker looking to take down a corrupt President…
