In a world where we take time for granted, we don’t ever take time to smell the roses like we should. It can feel like the world sets a path in front of most of us. Some people take that for divine providence. They feel the world was meant to set them in that direction. This can be true of the work we do, the places we go, and the people we meet. Those things are tethered to the place we dwell.

There are people in this world who have never left more than 100 miles form where they were born. They know nothing else but what they have seen their whole lives and want for nothing more. This is not only true of people who grew up in small towns but also some who have lived in big cities. In Karl Christian Krumpholz’s The City Was Never Going To Let Go, we find out a city has such pull on a certain couple.

As the comic begins, we’re taken to a bar, where a man and a woman are enjoying the night from their respective corners. AS the woman more than enjoys her solitude even in a crowded room like this, she loved the city he has dwelled in for so many years. The man, on the other hand, endures the city and becomes disenchanted with its charms every day. As Krumpholz introduces the reader to various characters, that make up what the city and who it stands for. But the comic isn’t really about one person or two, but about the city they live in.

Overall, an excellent story that proves how epic a storyteller that Krumpholz is. The story by Krumpholz is enigmatic, smart, and lovely. The art by Krumpholz is gorgeous. Altogether, a story that grips the reader with its relatability and love of a place.
