Review: The Walking Dead #125

walkingdead_125“So that’s what we’re fighting for. A world without Negan.”
– Rick

The penultimate issue of the current story arc for The Walking Dead, All Out War, is also #125, a milestone in the comic book industry. When books reach a milestone readers can expect something ‘big’ to happen to one or more of the main characters. Robert Kirkman has been teasing the past few months that nothing will be the same after this arc concludes and I, for one, was worried it spelled the demise of our most beloved sheriff of the zombie apocalypse, Rick Grimes. The last issue had me trembling before each page, thinking that Rick was too damaged from Dwight’s bolt to continue fighting and survive. Not only did Rick make it into the house, but we learn Dwight did not taint the bolt meant for Rick; Dwight shot someone else with the one tainted arrow he had first. The Walking Dead #125 continues the heart-wrenching story of this grizzly war and Kirkman was right…nothing will be the same when it’s over.

Zombies, walkers, the walking dead. That is what citizens of the Hilltop would normally be accustomed to seeing if they peered over the security walls surrounding their village. Zombies they could handle; they have been battling them since the outbreak began years ago. Now, their vista has been transformed to include the clan that wants nothing more than to see them all enslaved, The Saviors. Negan, the sociopathic tyrannical leader of The Saviors, has been camped just outside their walls since the last battle. Him and his followers have been waiting for someone within to exit the Hilltop and surrender, thinking that because Rick is either dead or dying that they would lack the motivation or expert leadership to continue fighting.

While Negan was outside the walls, Rick was within and his mentality and health are the main feature of issue #125. I was half-expecting him to be lying in a hospital bed, but being a fan of the fearless leader I should have know better than to think he would go down without a fight. For someone who just had an arrow penetrate his abdomen, Rick is up and about and moving with such purpose that it felt like the series had already begun a fresh start with each turn of the page. Now that Rick is positive whose side Dwight is on, he quickly formulates a plan to confront Negan and finally put an end to all the death and destruction All Out War has caused. He acts like a general commanding his forces to take up siege positions and goes out to seek Negan one-on-one. Dubious that Rick is still alive and/or well, Negan figures out that Dwight has deceived him. Their confrontation appeared perfect in an issue with only one left in the arc and I actually believed that The Survivors and The Saviors would work as one with the final issue heralding in the new era Kirkman has been speaking about. Being a fan of Kirkman and The Walking Dead should have taught me better than to think like that. The final page was a perfect ending to 125 issues of comic book greatness.

The Walking Dead #125 is one of my favorite issues of the series. Charlie Adlard is phenomenal the way he makes us really feel for Nicholas’s family heartache. We also get two full page pieces by Adlard; one of Negan and one of Negan and Rick at the end. I love stories where the good guys get mean and dirty in order to achieve their goals. This issue reminded me of the Rick Grimes that had to deal with the Governor long ago. The Rick Grimes that had to take care of The Hunters in such a gruesome fashion. The Rick Grimes that had to rip a man’s throat out with his teeth to save Carl. That is the man I think we have been missing since Negan entered the story. This issue ties everything together nicely and prepares us for the final issue in the story-altering arc. The only thing that remains to be seen is how the event of the final page affects our survivors moving forward. I’m just glad that our old sheriff is back and in fighting form.

Thoughts and Discussion

– Did Rick tell anyone else his plan before going out to meet Negan?

– Does anyone else think that Rick is in a vulnerable position after what happened? Will he be able to get away in time?

– Where do they go from here? What will happen next? Kirkman promised us ‘nothing will be the same after issue #126…what did he mean?

Until Next Time…Thanks for checking out my Review!

Review: The Walking Dead #124

TWDcover124“Once we’re inside–if it moves, kill it! It’s time for this war to END!
– Negan

I don’t know about any of you, but my hand was trembling with each page turn reading The Walking Dead #124. I started reading The Walking Dead about four years ago and consumed about seven years of comic greatness in one weekend. Since, Rick and Carl have been the subject of many late night rantings with my friends, family and coworkers. I know it might sound ridiculous to some, but I actually worry about these characters each month (or every 2 weeks as of late). When Rick lost his hand, I put the book down because I couldn’t believe it, foolishly thinking that his hand would reattach itself after I opened the book again. When Carl lost an eye I had similar thoughts; not Carl, please don’t kill off Carl is what I would think, hoping it would come true if I only willed it. Luckily, for all of us, Carl was ok and actually came out of that disastrous situation a stronger man. Now, with All Out War, we are equally worried about the first family of the zombie apocalypse but the prognosis is murky. Negan is on their doorstep…and he’s not leaving until he gets in.

The Walking Dead #124 continues the All Out War story arc and the continued struggle of Rick and the gang’s search for peace and conformity in the zombie ravaged world. Eugene gets a few extra pages this issue and an awesome splash page from Charlie Adlard. I have a feeling his story is going to collide with the main feature for a dramatic ending in #126. If you remember from a few issues back, Eugene and some other survivors escaped with the help of Carson and other Saviors that were willing to abandon Negan and his tyrannical ways. Eugene asserts his leadership role over Carson and even kills his first human in this issue. Way to go Eugene! I’m liking his character with each subsequent issue and now that he is on the TV show it’s nice to see him get some storylines. I’m excited to see where his story ends up in the next few issues.

Meanwhile, back at the Hilltop, we continue right where we left off with Rick being shot through the abdomen by Dwight’s arrow. Rick knows it was Dwight that did it and say as much. However, he says it in front of Nicholas, who knows nothing of what Rick, Dwight and some others had planned. That was one thing that bothered me about the storyline leading up to All Out War; Rick decided to keep so many people out of the loop that I think It cost some folks their lives. Rick can barely walk so he is helped into the house where most of the hilltop has retreated to. Jesus comes to his rescue when more of Negan’s men come to finish the job and I honestly was worried turning each page wondering if I was going to see Rick with a knife sticking through his throat. They make it into the infirmary and Dr. Carson makes a startling discovery about the wounded after seeing a dirt and gunk covered knife that Jesus brought him. They realize they have not been bitten, but have fevers and symptoms consistent with that of someone who was. They now understand that Negan and his men have been tainting their weapons with walker pus and discharge so even the smallest of cuts would have devastating and deadly results. That’s why we fear for Rick’s life because we think the arrow that hit him will cause him to turn. He can’t!…can he? For now, Rick is fine and if Dwight’s arrow hasn’t been tainted (that’s what I think) theory then he will be fine.

I don’t remember the last time a comic had me so concerned about the outcome. Robert Kirkman has really done a masterful job with The Walking Dead and the All Out War arc. He has been teasing that issue #126 is going to be completely unexpected and awesome and it’s something we would never guess. I have no idea what it could be. I’m almost certain that the arrow that struck Rick was not tainted and if that’s the case then he will heal from it. The only other theory I can come up with is that he will get a fever and turning into a walker will be all but certain until someone, maybe Eugene, comes up with a cure. I could spend all day coming up with strange and odd theories to what I think will be the outcome but that will get us nowhere. What is certain, however, is that Kirkman will deliver an outstanding story once again and Adlard will wow us with art that is out of this world. I suppose only time will tell, one more month to be exact.

Review: The Walking Dead #123

Walking-Dead-123-Cover“I don’t know…maybe I’m crazy…but I look out at the world before us…and I just don’t see how Negan ever defeats THIS.
– Rick to Andrea about the current state of The Hilltop

If that quote isn’t the best ominous warning I’ve ever heard I don’t know what is. I could hear Negan’s Busta Move truck coming before I turned the page. (does that make sense?) I think that was the quickest that I have ever read a comic book in my life. At least it felt that way. The team behind The Walking Dead know how to draw (no pun intended) us into their world and captivate readers with every issue and this one is a home-run. I’ve always thought that the best comic books are the ones that make you itch for the next issue. You can’t wait for the Trade because you need to know what happens in the story now; then you can buy the Trade anyway because the story is so great. That is what an awesome comic is. That is what a comic book should be; and that is why The Walking Dead is a lot of comic book fan’s favorite. By the way SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ISSUE #123

The Walking Dead #123 continues the ‘All Out War’ story arc and the continued struggle of Rick and the gang’s search for peace and conformity in the zombie ravaged world. But just as Kirkman has been telling us from the start, it’s not the undead we need to be careful of so much as it is the living. Those words have never been so true.

We start a little bit after where we left off last issue with Negan instructing his forces to cover their weapons with walker pus and scrapings to add a little extra bite (that time the pun was intended) to their strikes. Negan has brought his forces out near The Hilltop for an imminent attack and marches before them like General Patton. Dwight is on the first page giving Negan a look and this part of the story is where I think The Walking Dead has done an incredible job. To be able to add such an air of mystery around a comic book character is such a difficult thing to do. However, with Adlard’s drawing, Rathburn’s grey tones and Gaudiano inking each issue of ‘All Out War’ we are treated to such a tour de force in story-telling. Take for example Dwight on Page 1, Panel 3; you can almost sense what he is thinking without a word being written and feel his hatred for Negan oozing through the page. I love the arc surrounding Dwight and the ‘Is he good/Is he bad’ treatment thats been building up. Not to mention the teases that Kirkman and Mackiewicz give us in each installment of Letter Hacks (another great reason to buy single-issues).

Just as Rick feels complacent at The Hilltop, Negan and his forces attack the compound and chaos ensues. Rick, Aaron, and Nicholas band together taking out Survivors when Negan and Dwight catch them off-guard. Dwight is told to take Rick out with his virus-tainted crossbow and its in this moment that we as readers need to decide what Dwight’s endgame really is. What follows is too spoilery for this review but you will not be disappointed in picking up this issue.

The issue is one of my favorites of the series and definitely my favorite of this arc. Eugene will soon be brought into the mix and Andrea and Carl have something cooking that I think is going to be the series altering event that Kirkman has been hinting at. The story is outstanding and Kirkman delivers on so many levels. Adlard is on top of his game and with Gaudiano and Rathburn you can’t help but stare in awe at each page. The splash page in the middle was one of their best and included most of our favorite characters. With 3 issues left in ‘All Out War’ you can’t help but wonder what Kirkman has hidden up his sleeve. March 26th can’t get here soon enough.

Review: The Walking Dead #117

TheWalkingDead_117-1In the last issue, the first shots of “All Out War” rang out as Rick lead his army against Negan and his. By the end of the issue, the Saviors were trapped in their base, pinned by walkers, but Holly sacrificed herself to ensure that first battle win. In this issue, Holly is held prisoner and Negan must deal with that onslaught of walkers, while Rick makes the next steps of his war plan known.

“All Out War” has been an awesome storyline so far, and Negan, though at first a cookie-cutter villain, has grown on me as a threat. This issue really justified my “like” (and I use that term loosely) of Negan even more. I really don’t want to ruin what happens here, but Negan says some things and does some things that gives much-needed depth to the character. He’s not just the cookie cutter bully anymore, instead, he’s almost sympathetic. This is something that writer Robert Kirkman has learned over the years, as the Governor (the last bad guy of equal weight) lacked sympathy. That sympathy is something that seems to come from the television show, and its depiction of the Governor, and it’s welcome to see in the comic.

Overall, the issue on its own is only ok, as it’s a part of the much larger story, but those scenes towards the end of it featuring Negan make it really stand out. They don’t make sense on their own, but when you put them in perspective with what we’ve seen since the introduction of the character, they’re pretty altering. That scene is a bit cheap with how it comes about, but still it works, and works really well.

Overall, the series has wandered a bit all over in quality, but it’s picked up steam again, showing off the excellence I expect. For fans of the series, you won’t be disappointed, this is a hell of an interesting issue when it comes to character development.

Archaia Recruits All-Star Creative Team for ‘Hawken’

ARCHAIA RECRUITS ALL-STAR CREATIVE TEAM FOR ‘HAWKEN’

Graphic Novel Anthology Behind the Eagerly Anticipated, Free-To-Play Mech Game Welcomes an Impressive Line-Up of Artists

CHICAGO, IL (April 16, 2012) – Award-winning publisher Archaia Entertainment announced the creative team behind HAWKEN, the original graphic novel prequel to Adhesive Games’ upcoming free-to-play, mech, first-person shooter (FPS) from indie game publisher Meteor Entertainment.

Hawken is the story of a human-colonized planet that has been industrialized to the point of collapse. This crumbling world sets the stage for an ongoing hunt for vital resources and a brutal battle for survival. Written by Jeremy Barlow (Mass Effect: Homeworlds, Star Wars), the epic tale will span three decades, capturing key moments in the ambitious rise and tragic fall of this post-apocalyptic world and the pivotal few who determined its fate.

Each key moment in the story will be presented by a new artist, whose unique style and mood fits the tone of the unfolding events. The anthology boasts an impressive army of visual talent, including Federico Dallocchio (Starcraft, Modern Warfare 2: Ghost, Suicide Squad), Nathan Fox (DMZ, The Haunt), Stefano Gaudiano (Daredevil, Amazing Spiderman), Michael Gaydos (Alias, True Blood), Bagus Hutomo (Shrapnel, Heavy Metal), Christopher Moeller (Iron Empires, JLA: League of One), Moritat (Elephantmen, Transmetropolitan), Alex Sanchez (Star Wars: The Old Republic, JSA Classified), Brian Thies (Winter Soldier, Dark Tower), Greg Tocchini (Last Days of American Crime, X-Force), and Francisco Ruiz Velasco (Inhumans, conceptual artist on Hellboy 2, The Hobbit, and Pacific Rim).

The graphic novel will release in March 2013, following the game’s debut on 12-12-12. Aside from serving as the game’s narrative counterpart, the book will offer a veritable survivor’s guide for gamers—character profiles, weapon stats and schematics, maps, glossaries, strategies, and keys to unlocking special bonuses and feature in-game. The overall reading experience is designed to not only welcome fans into the Hawken universe, but equip them with exclusive tips and tools that enrich their overall enjoyment of the game as well.

Overseeing the creation of the graphic novel are DJ2 Entertainment and Eisner Award-nominated writer/artist and Co-Founder of Adhesive Games, Khang Le (Flight Vol. 2). “We’ve had a blast extrapolating the core fiction as envisioned by creative director Khang Le and his team at Adhesive, and wanted to make sure the extended universe we developed alongside Archaia was as captivating and provocative as the game itself,” said Dan Jevons, DJ2 Co-CEO.

DJ2 brought in Joe LeFavi of Quixotic Transmedia to develop a publishing strategy for Hawken, whose passion for the material and credibility as a brand builder in the publishing space made him the obvious choice. Quixotic later sealed the deal with frequent collaborator Archaia Black Label, a division of Archaia designed to help entertainment brands launch and expand into publishing. LeFavi will serve as Archaia’s Transmedia Producer and Executive Editor on the book alongside Archaia’s own Publisher, Mike Kennedy. “It’s rare to see a gaming brand take story so seriously from day one,” said Kennedy, who spent 18 years as a Producer in the video game industry. “That’s why we pulled out the stops and put together such a phenomenal creative team. Hawken has created an incredible world and we intend to do it justice.”

Archaia hosted a panel at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) in Chicago, IL on Friday, April 13 and debuted an exclusive preview of the game and graphic novel. Archaia also plans to distribute four limited-edition Hawken posters during key conventions throughout 2012. Each poster will feature original art from Khang Le, and together play a unique role in the game’s closed beta release in October 2012. The first of four posters premiered at C2E2.

Archaia Announces Partnership with Meteor to Publish ‘Hawken’ Graphic Novel

HAWKEN and Archaia Get Graphic Together

Graphic Novel Will Explore the Rich World Behind the Eagerly Anticipated, Free-To-Play Mech Game

SEATTLE, WA (EMERALD CITY COMICON/March 31, 2012) – Meteor Entertainment and Eisner Award-winning publisher Archaia Entertainment have teamed up to produce and publish a hardcover graphic novel for HAWKEN, Meteor’s upcoming First-Person-Shooter (FPS).  HAWKEN is already generating major online buzz as a fan-favored underdog within the gaming community. Produced by Adhesive Games, an independent game studio based in Pasadena, HAWKEN has been praised for groundbreaking gameplay and visuals that rival most AAA console titles. HAWKEN is the first title from indie publisher Meteor Entertainment.

Meteor is holding a panel at Emerald City Comic Con in their hometown of Seattle, WA on Saturday, March 31st from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM in Room TCC 102 in the Washington State Convention Center. Representatives from both Meteor and Archaia will share more details about their publishing partnership and hint at some big announcements for Archaia’s next appearance in Chicago, IL at C2E2, in Chicago April 13-15, 2012.

HAWKEN is the story of a post-apocalyptic, human-colonized planet that has been industrialized to the point of collapse. This crumbling world is the setting for a hunt for vital resources and a brutal battle for survival. Writing the graphic novel for Archaia is Jeremy Barlow, whose recent work on the Mass Effect 3 comic books made him an easy choice for another high-profile games-to-comics translation. In addition to Barlow’s script, Archaia is assembling a team of popular artists, including Moritat (Elephantmen, Transmetropolitan), Stefano Gaudiano (Daredevil, Amazing Spiderman), and Khang Le (Flight), with more names to be announced at C2E2.

Eisner Award-nominated Flight writer/artist and Adhesive Games co-founder Khang Le crafted HAWKEN’s vast mythology, which was later extrapolated alongside DJ2 Entertainment, a new LA-based production company that specializes in transmedia brand development.  “It’s amazing to look around and see so many trusted friends behind HAWKEN. With 1.2 million views on YouTube and 250,000+ users already registered for our 12/12/12 beta release, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come,” said Le. “Just goes to show that, with a great team behind you, anything is possible.”

The graphic novel is set to release in March 2013 following the 12-12-12 beta release of HAWKEN the game. While the game showcases the visually stunning and high action FPS experience, the graphic novel will expose the world’s vast mythology and explore the key characters and events motivating the war in-game. Reading the graphic novel is designed to not only serve as a narrative counterpart to the game, but also enrich the gaming experience with secret clues and codes that unlock special features in-game. “We wanted to do something special in publishing, but we needed a partner with enough artistic integrity and proven quality to pull it off,” said Mark Long, game veteran and CEO of Meteor Entertainment.

The Meteor-Archaia partnership was facilitated by Joe LeFavi of Quixotic Transmedia, who spearheads business development for Archaia’s Black Label division, a unique development pipeline designed to work alongside entertainment brands eager to launch and expand into publishing. “What excited us most about Hawken was their determination to revitalize, if not redefine, how people see and appreciate mechs,” said LeFavi, who will serve as executive editor and Archaia’s transmedia producer on the book. “Boasting influences from Blade Runner and Tekkonkinkreet to Nausicaä and Ghost in the Shell, Hawken is a breathtaking portrait of a war-torn world where greed is good, war is life, and survival is for the few with the most ammo. To find such a gritty and grounded vision of our future was inspiring. Sure, the game is gorgeous and really fun, but Meteor isn’t simply creating a great game. They’re creating an entire universe fans can enjoy and explore for years to come.”
