“Catalyst War” splits Radiant Black

Known for pushing the envelope with unique twists, easter eggs, and multimedia tie-ins, the Massive-Verse’s Radiant Black, by Kyle Higgins, Marcelo Costa, Eduardo Ferigato, and Joe Clark, will have fans doing a double-take next month yet again—literally—with the release of two issues: Radiant Black #26 and the Radiant Black #26.5.

One storyline follows Marshall, one storyline puts the spotlight on Nathan, but both issues are a must-buy for readers to get the full experience. There are, after all, two sides to every story.

“Catalyst War” has been two years in the making and an event told across timelines featuring two different art teams telling two different stories each month. Both timelines are integral to the event featuring the choices of Marshall and Nathan and how those choices impact their worlds. By the end, readers will find out who will be Radiant Black going forward.

The “.5” storyline will run through Radiant Black #30 and Radiant Black #30.5 before hitting fans with another jaw-dropping plot twist.

The Walking Dead infects Image’s covers in October with variants

Image Comics has announced a line of exciting team-up variants in celebration of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead hitting its milestone 20 year anniversary. These variant covers will infect Image Comics titles all through October and feature Image artists’ unique interpretations of the iconic horror series’ characters.

The first nine Walking Dead team-up variants revealed this week feature artwork by such comics superstars as Skottie Young (on I Hate Fairyland #10), Declan Shalvey (on Time Before Time #28), Dean Rankin (on Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland #4), Andrea Sorrentino (on Tenement #5), Stefano Simeone (on connecting variants for: No/One #7, Radiant Black #28 covers C & DRogue Sun #17, and The Dead Lucky #10).

The Walking Dead first launched in 2003 from Image Comics and garnered critical acclaim and an escalating sales track-record before Hollywood picked up the hot IP and the series was adapted from TV by AMC in 2010. It was also in 2010 that Kirkman teamed up with David Alpert to launch the multiplatform entertainment company, Skybound Entertainment, which would expand his—and others’—IP beyond comics into other mediums. The Walking Dead has since gone on to become a pop culture phenomenon inspiring everything from hit video games, novelizations, merchandise, and a multitude of multimedia spin-offs across the walker universe. The series has sold over 45 million copies across multiple formats and has been translated into 21 languages globally.

Image’s Massive-Verse is throwing a party ahead of C2E2

Join the Massive-verse team for a comic book event like no other! On Thursday, August 4 at 7 PM at the Embers Tap House in Lockport, Illinois, fans will have an exciting opportunity to meet up with the Massive-verse creators, including: Kyle Higgins, Melissa Flores, Marcelo Costa, Eduardo Ferigato, Ryan Parrott, Igor Monti, Mat Groom, Joe Clark, Alec Siegel, Laurence Holmes, and Michael Busuttil, and the Circle Guy News crew—for a Massive kick off to c2e2!

Fans who attend will enter Existence with unique narrative experiences that shine new light on the Radiants, visit the real world—reel world?—locations portrayed in the pages of Radiant Black (including Embers and the Roxy theatre in downtown Lockport), and partake in unique photo opportunities and surprise giveaway items.

Then, on Friday, August 5 at 1 PM at the McCormick Place Convention Center, c2e2 attendees are invited to head over to room S401 for the Across the Massive-verse panel. The Image Comics Massive-Verse is only getting started—and this panel is the only place to find out what’s next! Join Higgins, Ferigato, Parrott, Flores, Chen, Groom, and Busuttil for an exclusive Q&A guaranteed to spill the secrets of the Massive-Verse!

Higgins and Costa’s breakout hit Radiant Black took superhero storytelling to new heights when it launched—but Radiant Black isn’t the only character inhabiting the Massive-verse. There’s a whole universe for readers to explore! Characters like Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl Red, The Dead Lucky’s Bibiana—and more yet to be revealed—all occupy the Massive-verse. Each of them has a different story to tell, different adversaries to face… and they each occupy a very different corner of this shared universe.

Massive-verse C2E2 Party

Underrated: Radiant Black (Not So) Secret Origin

This is a column that focuses on something or some things from the comic book sphere of influence that may not get the credit and recognition it deserves. Whether that’s a list of comic book movies, ongoing comics, or a set of stories featuring a certain character. The columns may take the form of a bullet pointed list, or a slightly longer thinkpiece – there’s really no formula for this other than whether the things being covered are Underrated in some way. This week: Radiant Black: (Not So) Secret Origin.

I’m not the biggest fan of the Power Rangers, but I’ve always thought about picking up a trade or two to check out the comic series, but I never quite think of doing that when I’m actively looking for something new to read at the shop. A week or two ago, when I was reorganizing the backstock trades in the basement, my eye was caught by the cover of Radiant Black: (Not So) Secret Origin, and I quickly spun the book to check out the blurb, and the price. As it turned out, the book is one of those that Image publishes and prices low to encourage a person to check out the book (I mean at $10, you can’t really argue the value of getting six comics for the price of three or so). Now, I’m not going to regurgitate the blurb on the back of the trade, or write a summary in slightly different words, but I will just copy it directly from the publisher’s website because who doesn’t love to be efficient?

Visionary writer KYLE HIGGINS (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Ultraman) and artist MARCELO COSTA reinvent super heroes for a new generation! Nathan Burnett has just turned 30, and things aren’t great—he’s working (and failing) at two jobs, his credit card debt is piling up, and his only move…is moving back home with his parents.

But when Nathan discovers the ethereal, cosmic RADIANT, he’s given the power to radically change his fortunes…unless the Cosmic Beings who created them succeed in taking them back by any means necessary. Oh, and did we mention there’s a RED RADIANT who wants Nathan dead? The next must-read comic book series STARTS HERE.

Cloaked, on the surface, reminded me of the heroes that inspired Batman; the Shadow, the Spider and the Black Bat. Men who were mostly powerless and used handguns to dish out justice to criminals to varying degrees of lethality. This story takes the form of a man trying to discover the legacy of the city’s masked hero by hiring an ex-cop private eye to find out why the hero disappeared. It’s through this lens that we get glimpses of the hero’s activities during the years he was active, told through the people who knew him the most (which, given that he kept his identity very close, isn’t many).

The book is very much what it says it is; something that fans of Invincible and the Power Rangers will find enjoyable (or at least, those were the vibes I got most from the pages of the trade, but since I’ve not really read much of either of the names inspirations, I can’t really confirm or deny the statement). The only downside to the book is that it doesn’t really end… the final chapter is very much an origin story for one of the characters and not a final chapter which feels a little less than satisfying. If nothing else it encourages you to pick up the next book, and ultimately that’s what we’re looking for in a book; do I want to read the next book? And the answer is “oh yes.”

Join us next week where there will doubtless be another movie, series, comic or comic related thing discussed that is, for whatever reason, Underrated.
