Westbrook Studios Developing an Animated Feature Adaptation of Comic Series Canto

Westbrook Studios has announced that they have optioned rights to the comic series CANTO and are adapting the fantasy series as an animated feature. Co-creator and writer of CANTO, David M. Booher is set to write the screenplay for the film and will executive produce the project alongside co-creator and series illustrator Drew Zucker. Westbrook Studios Co-President and Head of Motion Pictures, Jon Mone will produce. Ryan Shimazaki will oversee the project on behalf of Westbrook Studios.
 
Inspired by The Wizard of Oz and Dante’s Inferno, CANTO is an all-ages adventure for past and present generations alike.
 
For generations, Canto and his fellow tin-people have been enslaved in the land of Arcana, their hearts replaced with clocks. Though love is forbidden, that hasn’t stopped Canto from falling in love with a Tin Girl. When the slavers damage the tin girl’s clock beyond repair, Canto leaves Arcana to go on a quest and find his people’s missing hearts. Along the way, Canto befriends a fierce Malorex, finds a Hermit who lives in a mechanical squid, and works with a mysterious warrior named Aulaura who helps him infiltrate the City of Dis. At the Emerald Tower, Canto confronts the wizard behind it all, The Shrouded Man, and learns the fate of his true love’s heart.

The six-issue fantasy series was published by IDW Publishing with the first issue released in June 2019. The sequel CANTO II was published in August of 2020, and IDW announced in January 2021 that CANTO was renewed for several future story arcs. 

Robert Kirkman and artist Lorenzo De Felici’s Oblivion Song is Being Adapted for Film by Universal

Oblivion Song Chapter One

Skybound Entertainment and Universal Pictures announced this morning that the sci-fi drama Oblivion Song—based upon the New York Times bestselling Robert Kirkman and artist Lorenzo De Felici’s bestselling comic book series of the same name—is being developed for film. 

Universal’s Executive Vice President of Production Jon Mone and Director of Development Lexi Barta will oversee the project on behalf of the studio. The Oblivion Song adaptation will be produced by Skybound’s film team, including Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst, with Sean O’Keefe attached to write the script. 

O’Keefe’s latest project, Wonderland, which stars Mark Wahlberg with Peter Berg directing, recently wrapped filming. O’Keefe sold the first script based on the Robert B. Parker bestselling Spenser book series in a deal with Netflix.

Oblivion Song Chapter Two

Image and Skybound Entertainment’s Oblivion Song by Kirkman and De Felici is colored by Annalisa Leoni, lettered by Rus Wooton, and edited by Sean Mackiewicz. It takes place a decade after 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia were suddenly lost in Oblivion. The government made every attempt to recover them but after many years they gave up. Nathan Cole won’t. He makes daily trips, risking his life to try and rescue those lost, alone and afraid, living in the apocalyptic hellscape of Oblivion. But maybe… Nathan is looking for something else. Why can’t he resist the siren call of the Oblivion Song?
