NYCC 2013: More Marvel! Miracleman, Iron Patriot, Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer & More!

Saturday saw a good chunk of announcements at New York Comic Con from Marvel, including some long rumored or wondered about series and characters. Numerous teasers that have hinted as to what we can expect were revealed!

  • Avengers A.I.” #8.NOW – The series heads to the 130th century with the Uncanny Avengers and a new division of S.H.I.E.L.D. called the “Robot Hunter Squad”

  • Ghost Rider rides in 2014! – Looks like Ghost Rider is getting some focus again. Not only will the Spirit of Vengeance get his own series written by Felipe Smith and drawn by Tradd Moore but he’ll also join Charles Soule‘s Thunderbolts. However…. from reports, it looks like Thunderbolts will have Johnny Blaze while the solo series will be someone new!

  • Silver Surfer! – Dan Slott and artist Mike Allred take on the classic character and say they’ll introduce a new female character to go along with him.

  • Iron Patriot Ales Kot with art by Garry Brown take on James Rhodes in his own series who attempts to forge his own path (as opposed to the other series where he tried the same thing).

  • Miracleman – We’ve wondered when he’d return, but Marvel has finally announced their plans for the legal limbo creation. Starting in 2014 we’ll be seeing more including the never before been seen Miracleman #25 by Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham. The series will kick off with an all new material and a #1 in January!

Review: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1 and Avengers A.I. #1

The Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1

superior foe of spider-man #1 CoverBoomerang and some of Spidey’s deadliest baddies prove that with terrible powers come terrible responsibilities! Rising star, writer Nick Spencer teams with Eisner Award winning artist Steve Lieber for a walk on the Spider-Verse’s evil side!

Some of the “B” team including Boomerang, Shocker, the Beetle, Speed Demon and Overdrive are the new Sinister Six, except they’re no where near as good… or sinister. Told from Boomerang’s perspective the first issue goes over the helpless team and gives us an insight into their lives.

I expected some sort of action comic, though what exactly, I wasn’t sure. Instead I got one of the freshest comics and best debuts of the year. The comic is more of a noir/crime comic filled with humor from a perspective we often don’t see, the villains. The comic reminds me a lot of the recent Heroes for Hire and Villains for Hire, both great comics that were cancelled too soon.

The writing in this comic nails it with a great voice, tone and pacing and gives us sympathetic and entertaining characters, showing there’s more to them than being beaten up by Spider-Man.

The art by Lieber is solid, fitting the tone perfectly for the story Spencer has set up.

The first issue blew me away and is a contender for best new series of 2013. I have no idea where the series will go from here, but this is a comic I want and want more of.

Avengers A.I. #1

avengers ai #1 coverHARDER. BETTER. FASTER. STRANGER. The triumph of Hank Pym turns to tragedy for the human race?an unfathomable Pandora’s Box of destruction! When a brave new villain is unleashed, only one team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can save us from the future ! Avengers A.I.!

Spinning out of Age of Ultron, Hank Pym has assembled a team to handle a new threat, actually another threat he created. In dealing with Ultron, Pym has possibly unleashed something worse. You see, after all he learned from the timeline shattering Age of Ultron… he really didn’t learn. There were no lessons, only more shit caused by Pym’s tinkering.

The first issue is an pseudo explanation of the threat and then Pym’s gathering of his new team made up of the Vision, Victor Mancha, Doombot and Monica Chang. We’re also introduced to the mysterious Alexis at the end.

There’s some great stuff here. I really liked Doombot and his personality. That should bring some great comedic relief and interaction throughout the series. The story though was only so-so. There’s nothing bad with it, there’s just nothing that got me really excited. The fact that Pym hasn’t learned from his mistakes only makes the first issue a bit more frustrating to me and Pym a less likeable character.

I’m going to give this new series a chance and read the first arc, but so far, it’s just ok.

Picks of the Week: Satellite Sam #1 and 9 Other Picks

satellite same #1 coverThere’s a lot of comics out this week and some solid choices, but having read this issue last week, it stands out to me as my choice for pick of the week. Satellite Sam #1 is the latest comic by Matt Fraction, but this team he teams up with Howard Chaykin on art.

The series is a noirish murder mystery set in the early days of television. There’s such a great mix of setting, characters, everything. The look, feel, it’s the complete package of a series. This could easily be a contender for “best new series” when the year is up.

Check out below for the rest of my picks in alphabetical order.

  • Avengers AI #1 – Sam Humphries takes on the tough task of picking up the pieces and making something from Age of Ultron. Here we get to see how Dr. Pym handles it all with his team of robots….
  • Clive Barker’s Next Testament #2 – The first issue was solid and to see Clive Barker take on religion like this is a fascinating read.
  • Dark Skullkickers Dark #1 – Jim Zubkavich is kicking ass with each brand new first issue.
  • The Final Plague #1 – This issue gave me the creeps, nuff said.
  • Mark Waid’s Green Hornet #3 – Waid continues to show why he’s considered one of the best writers in the industry.
  • Masks and Mobsters Vol. 1 – More Monkeybrain awesomeness get a print edition.
  • Princeless Vol. 2 #4 – The series is great for adults and kids and treats both with intelligence.
  • Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1 – I’ve loved Superior Spider-Man, so crossing my fingers for this one.
  • Trinity of Sin: Pandora #1 – This series will play a big role in Trinity War… that alone makes it a buy.
