Review: Eugenic #2 (of 3)

It’s been 200 years since the New Humans first appeared and became the dominant form of life. Now the human resistance fights back.

Eugenic is a comic where I’m sucked in and already can tell I want more. Only a three issue series, Eugenic #2 jumps 200 years into the future of the first issue to see the ramifications of decisions made there.

The story is a fascinating one in that each issue is a segment as opposed to a continuing a narrative through each. Writer James Tynion IV and artist Eryk Donovan are exploring concepts, philosophy, and society in this three issue series by presenting short stories that hint at the greater whole. It’s up to the reader at times to fill in the blanks as to how things have gone over each time period. This is a comic that challenges the reader to explore its themes instead of just presenting a narrative to enjoy.

Part of the enjoyment is filling in the blanks though.

With 200 years passed between the first and second issue we’re delivered bread crumbs as to what’s happened and we’re asked to piece it all together like the puzzles that are the Numans.

That Numan puzzle is delivered courtesy of Donovan who is tasked with the fun task of a palette of characters that are diverse in a whole new way. Each is unique in their own special way with mutations and contortions that I’d never dream of (or have nightmares of). This is clearly an artist who is going wild with ideas on the page and while you think of what each page teases out you can spend time looking at every detail which creates a story unto itself.

This isn’t a comic in the traditional sense where we follow a few characters along the way in a story. Instead we’re being presented pieces of a puzzle each looking at the ramifications of a decision and the philosophy about them. This is a parable in comic form and it’s all the more fascinating for it.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: Moon Knight #188 (Marvel) – I’m always up to read a new Moon Knight series, and while I did drop off of Lemire’s run, I’m more than excited to see a new take on the character. Plus, I’m a sucker for the Legacy numbering.

Pestilence #5 (AfterShock) – Zombies in the middle ages. I honestly have no other reason for wanting to read this.

Harbinger Renegade #0 (Valiant) – As the build up to Valiant’s next big event continues, I’m super curious to see what’s on offer here.

Joe

Top Pick: Moon Knight #188 (Marvel) – I loved the last run, and am excited to see where Max Bemis takes this. So far he has proven to be a fun writer (see Worst X-Men Ever), and I always love how batshit crazy Moon Knight is.

Batman Lost #1 (DC Comics) – More Metal! This series has been turned up to 11, and now we get more craziness from Snyder and an awesome team of all stars.

Mister Miracle #4 (DC Comics) – Tom King is great at giving what you never expect, and this series has been no different. So far this is a brutal, raw, and original look at the New Gods and their supporting cast. I have loved every issue so far.

Detective Comics #968 (DC Comics) – I am a Tim fan, and Red Robin is back, but so is future-Batman-Tim who is a bit more ruthless and scary. This series is a ton of fun.

The Despicable Deadpool #289 (Marvel) – We get more classic Deadpool vs Cable before the movie sequel will add even more of it. This is stupid fun.

Brett

Top Pick: Star Wars #38 (Marvel) – Kieron Gillen takes on Star Wars, that alone has me excited for this.

Catalyst Prime: Accell Vol. 2 #1 (Lion Forge) – The Catalyst Prime universe has been a breath of fresh air and their resident speedster is a perfect example of the energy that makes the line of comics so entertaining and fun.

Force #1 (Action Lab Entertainment) – Football + comic = a must for me.

Eugenic #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue was a shocker and the second takes us 200 years further into the future. A series that feels like it’s breaking so many rules.

Kong on Planet of the Apes #1 (BOOM! Studios) – I had never thought of this crossover and while it seems silly, holy crap do I want this.

Baltimore Comic Con 2017: Eryk Donovan Talks Eugenic

When a plague ravages the world, one scientist discovers the cure and becomes the savior of mankind. Hope is restored, and the world rebuilds. But then people who took the cure begin having children who are… unnatural, and the definition of “normal” is forever altered.

At Baltimore Comic Con we got a chance to talk to artist Eryk Donovan about his new comic series Eugenic with writer James Tynion IV.

Review: Eugenic #1

When a plague ravages the world, one scientist discovers the cure and becomes the savior of mankind. Hope is restored, and the world rebuilds. But then people who took the cure begin having children who are… unnatural, and the definition of “normal” is forever altered.

Eugenic is the final volume in the “ic” trilogy of comics by James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan that began with Memetic and then Cognetic, and all released by BOOM! Studios. Set in the future, the world has been ravaged by a plague and a breakthrough has given hope as the first babies will be born, but things aren’t as easy as that.

Eugenic #1 is the 15 minutes before the credits or the short film made to promote a movie. What you think going into the comic will be different than what you think when you’re done. The opening of the comic in some short text sets things up and when you’re done, go read it again.

It’s a fascinating first issue that’s sci-fi horror at its best and one that can be debated as Tynion and Donovan’s decisions can easily be dissected twenty which ways. From the decision to make the “mad scientist” LGBT, to a debate later about race and what will happen in the series, to the new humans themselves, this is a comic where every detail has been thought through in interesting ways. This isn’t just an interesting narrative, it’s an interesting exploration of concepts and philosophies in many ways and that’s explored not just in the narrative and words, but through Donovan’s art as well.

Eugenic #1 isn’t what I was expected in many ways. The issue is one that you wind up rethinking once you get to the end which is a fantastic reading and story experience. Can’t wait to see where this goes and what this creative team has to say with this series.

Mr. H

Top Pick: Batman: White Knight # 1 (DC Comics) – I have been beyond excited for this book for quite a while now. While it must be hard to break new ground for characters that have been around for 75 + years, I have faith that Sean Gordon Murphy is going to do it. Having been able to have a chat with the man himself this past summer I got a good sense of what he wants to do with his Batman and Gotham. I must say it is an intriguing premise one that plays off of the concept of redemption and accountability. Plus returning Joker to his Jack Napier alter ego is something I have wanted to see for a long time. This should rock in so many ways!

Batman: The Dawnbreaker # 1 (DC Comics) – The one shots for this Metal crossover have all rocked so far, and I have no reason to believe that this one won’t live up to the example set thus far. The thought of putting the most powerful weapon in the universe on the finger of a very young and angry Bruce Wayne has me on the the edge of the multiverse on the possibilities. Will there be a chance for brighter days or will it indeed be Batman’s darkest night?

Joe

Top Pick: Batman: White Knight #1 (DC Comics) – I am excited for this book, and not just because I am a sucker for Batman, but also to see the entire story flipped on its head. It doesn’t hurt that Sean Murphy is drawing and writing this.

Old Man Logan #29 (Marvel) – I have been completely shocked by how good this book has stayed since Lemire ended it perfectly. It is a blast. He’s fighting an army of hulks. I mean, that’s both ridiculous and amazing.

Iron Fist #73 (Marvel) – Sabretooth comes home as this book comes under the new legacy numbering. I am excited to see if Brisson can keep the action going, and keep delivering me a fun Danny Rand, since Netflix hasn’t.

Paper Girls #16 (Image) – Saga isn’t the only incredible story Vaughn delivers from Image. Paper Girls is such a fun and wacky ride that is full of the 80s, sci-fi, and friendship. Oh and it also features badass girls who (used to) deliver papers.

Outcast Vol. 5 TP (Image) – One of Robert Kirkman’s other projects, that also has its own show. It’s about demons, exorcisms, and small town America. It’s crazy, and creepy, and I have enjoyed every bit of it so far.

Alex

Top Pick: Batman: White Knight #1 (DC Comics) – Imagine if the Joker used his brilliance to fight for Gotham rather than against it? I really can’t express just how cool of an idea this is (and the comic itself is also very good), and getting to see the Joker use his mind to come at Batman in a new way is utterly fascinating.

Shadowman/Rae Sremmurd #1 (Valiant) – Shadowman is a Valiant character that I don’t know enough about (shocking, right?) so any chance I can get to read about him I’ll take. Plus the art is awesome!

Brett

Top Pick: Motor Girl #9 (Abstract Studios) – This series will always be my pick of the week. Cute, touching, funny, entertaining, it’s the complete package when it comes to comics and the one comic I look forward to every single month.

Catalyst Prime: Astonisher #1 (Lion Forge Comics) – The latest series to debut as part of the Catalyst Prime is focused on a rich tech white dude with psionic-ish powers. An interesting first issue that’s another solid addition to this line of comics.

Eugenic #1 (BOOM! Studios) – This one should get people talking.

Spirits of Vengeance #1 (Marvel) – Marvel’s Legacy initiative is really kicking off this week and this series bringing together some of Marvel’s more horror elements should be an interesting one. Characters that have a mixed history of their own solo series are together for this new team book.

Slots #1 (Image Comics) – This series is one that was on my radar just due to the fact it’s a new one from Image Comics. After this week’s tragedy in Las Vegas, I’m reading it with a different perspective and it’ll be interesting to see how it resonates now.
