Review: Eugenic #2 (of 3)
It’s been 200 years since the New Humans first appeared and became the dominant form of life. Now the human resistance fights back.
Eugenic is a comic where I’m sucked in and already can tell I want more. Only a three issue series, Eugenic #2 jumps 200 years into the future of the first issue to see the ramifications of decisions made there.
The story is a fascinating one in that each issue is a segment as opposed to a continuing a narrative through each. Writer James Tynion IV and artist Eryk Donovan are exploring concepts, philosophy, and society in this three issue series by presenting short stories that hint at the greater whole. It’s up to the reader at times to fill in the blanks as to how things have gone over each time period. This is a comic that challenges the reader to explore its themes instead of just presenting a narrative to enjoy.
Part of the enjoyment is filling in the blanks though.
With 200 years passed between the first and second issue we’re delivered bread crumbs as to what’s happened and we’re asked to piece it all together like the puzzles that are the Numans.
That Numan puzzle is delivered courtesy of Donovan who is tasked with the fun task of a palette of characters that are diverse in a whole new way. Each is unique in their own special way with mutations and contortions that I’d never dream of (or have nightmares of). This is clearly an artist who is going wild with ideas on the page and while you think of what each page teases out you can spend time looking at every detail which creates a story unto itself.
This isn’t a comic in the traditional sense where we follow a few characters along the way in a story. Instead we’re being presented pieces of a puzzle each looking at the ramifications of a decision and the philosophy about them. This is a parable in comic form and it’s all the more fascinating for it.
