Early Review: Death Sentence #1

Death Sentence CoverWhat would you do with superpowers – and six months to live?

That’s the dilemma facing three people who’ve contracted the G+ Virus, a terrifying new STD.

What can graphic designer Verity, failing indie guitarist Weasel and roguish media personality Monty do in the time they have left? Fade away – or go out in a blaze of glory?

Initially when I read the solicit for this upcoming series which debuts in August, I immediately had flashbacks to the underwhelming Legacy Virus storyline in the X-Men comics of the 90s. Not a good thing to think about. However a few pages in and I immediately began to think I wish that storyline was even a sliver as entertaining as this new series.

The attitude, the art, the story, the characters, it all comes together in an amazing way, this is a perfect package. We’ve got believable reactions to the situation at hand, and set-ups as to what’s coming that are believable and entertaining at the same time. If you knew you were going to die, wouldn’t you tell off your boss? If you had 6 months to live, wouldn’t you throw caution to the wind? The truthful answer is yes and yes.

There’s something that’s captured in this first issue. It nails that “thing” you’re looking for in a new comic when you pick it up. I not only wanted to read the next issue, I wanted to do so immediately. There’s great characters, solid dialogue and an interesting premise. It all feels original and in a package that’s awesome to look at. For as great as the writing is, the art is just as good.

There’s still time to pre-order this comic and trust me, when it’s released, you’ll be happy you did. Titan Comics has been announcing a slew of projects lately. If they’re all of this quality, you’re looking at a strong contender for publisher of the year.
