Pantheon at SDCC!

Official Press Release

Pantheon Books will be at this year’s San Diego ComicCon (July 20-24), and we would love to see you there. We will be at Booth #1515.

We have two Pantheon authors joining us at ComicCon this year: Craig Thompson/HABIBI (onsale 9/20) and Chip Kidd/BAT MANGA!. Both will be appearing at our booth and on author panels, and I would love to set up interviews for you with them in advance of or during the event. Thompson is available for on-site interviewson Friday (7/22) and Saturday (7/23), and Kidd will be available for interviews throughout the convention. More information about the artists may be found below.

Also, just a note that this year marks the 25th anniversary of Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer-Prize winning Maus, and in the fall Pantheon is publishing Spiegelman’s METAMAUS (onsale 10/4), a studied look at the genesis of Maus, accompanied by a DVD with never-before-seen panels, a home movie, and other objects relating to the original publication of Spiegelman’s groundbreaking original comic book. We will have METAMAUS buttons on hand for giveaway throughout the convention.

Finally, next spring, Pantheon’s sister imprint Schocken Books is publishing its first ever graphic novel: UNTERZAKHN (onsale 3/20/2012) by Leela Corman, a mesmerizing, heartbreaking story of immigrant life on New York’s Lower East Side at the turn of the 20th century. In anticipation of this exciting release, we will be giving away women’s panties at the Pantheon booth, since, as some of you may know, the word “unterzakhn” is Yiddish for “underthings.” How’s that for a buzz-worthy giveaway item?

Craig Thompson’s previous graphic novels include Blankets (for which he received three Harvey Awards for Best Artist, Best Graphic Album of Original Work, and Best Cartoonist; and two Eisner Awards for Best Graphic Album and Best Writer/Artist); Goodbye, Chunky Rice; and Carnet de Voyage. He lives in Portland, Oregon. Advance praise for HABIBI: “This is not just an epic that sprawls from desert to harem to modern urban waste…it’s a look at how the first and third worlds are divided, Islam and Christianity united, and humanity too separated from the natural world. Ambitious.” —Library Journal

Chip Kidd is a graphic designer and writer in New York City. His previous books about comics for Pantheon were Bat Manga!, Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz, and Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross. Two won the Eisner Award and were national bestsellers. As an editor, Kidd has most recently overseen the publication of Alex Ross’s Rough Justice (3/30/2010). http://goodisdead.com/

Pantheon Books works with some of the most iconic and innovative graphic novelists on the scene. Charles Burns, Dan Clowes, David Mazzucchelli, Alex Ross, Marjane Satrapi, Art Spiegelman, and Chris Ware are just a few of the many talents we publish, and information about them will be on hand at our booth.

CBLDF Cheers Free Speech Victory in Brown v. EMA!

Official Press Release

CBLDF Cheers Free Speech Victory in Brown v. EMA!

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund applauds today’s Supreme Court decision to affirm the First Amendment rights of creators, readers and retailers by denying states the ability to create new restrictions on violent content in Brown v. EMA.  In a 7-2 decision, the high court struck down a California law that would have banned the sale and rental of violent video games to minors, and would have made violence a new category of unprotected speech.

The CBLDF was active in opposing the law, and filed its own amicus brief arguing that the California law was unconstitutional by citing a history of moral panics, most notably the anti-comics fervor that nearly dismantled the comics industry in the 1950s. The arguments presented in CBLDF’s brief were part of the discussion in oral arguments, and cited in the Court’s majority decision.

CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein says, “We’re extremely pleased that the Court’s decision preserves the First Amendment rights of the users and creators of video games, and that they resisted California’s desire to establish new categories of unprotected speech. We’re also gratified that our discussion of the comics industry’s painful experience with moral panic and legislative meddling helped inform the positive outcome we see this morning.”

CBLDF legal counsel Robert Corn-Revere of Davis Wright Tremaine wrote the brief.  He says, “The Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. EMA applied well-established First Amendment principles to find the California law is unconstitutional.  In reaching his conclusion, Justice Scalia’s majority opinion noted the crusade against comics led by Dr. Frederic Wertham and observed that it was inconsistent with our constitutional traditions.  It traced the long history of censorship involving media the government claimed ‘corrupted youth — from movies to comic books — and held that such crusades cannot be reconciled with the First Amendment.”

Please visit www.cbldf.org for more news and analysis on this important decision, including analysis by Mr. Corn-Revere to be published later this afternoon.  Please support the CBLDF’s defense of free speech issues like this by making a donation today!

They have defended dozens of Free Expression cases in courts across the United States, and led important education initiatives promoting comics literacy and free expression. Breaking – U.S. Supreme Court Upholds Video Games as Free Speech

Bookmark and Share

Just moments ago, the United States Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the video game industry and retailers in Brown v. EMA (it used to be Schwarzenegger v. EMA).  The full opinion can be found here.

Justice Scalia who wrote the opinion stated:

…the act forbidding sale or rental of violent games to minors does not comport with the 1st Amendment.

Alito concurred with the judgement, and was joined by Chief Justice Roberts.  Justices Thomas and Breyer were the ones who dissented in an opinion written by Thomas.

The court had to decide if a state law restricting the sale of violent video games to minors was a violation of the protections of free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment.  The Ninth Court had ruled in favor of the video game industry.

From the opinion:

Video games qualify for First Amendment protection. Like protected books, plays, and movies, they communicate ideas through familiar literary devices and features distinctive to the medium. And “the basic principles of freedom of speech . . . do not vary” with a new and different communication medium.

Further the opinion delivers a blow to those claiming video games cause psychological harm to children including increasing aggressive behavior.

Psychological studies purporting to show a connection between exposureto violent video games and harmful effects on children do not prove that such exposure causes minors to act aggressively. Any demon-strated effects are both small and indistinguishable from effects pro-duced by other media. Since California has declined to restrict those other media, e.g., Saturday morning cartoons, its video-game regula-tion is wildly underinclusive, raising serious doubts about whether the State is pursuing the interest it invokes or is instead disfavoring a particular speaker or viewpoint.

Update 1 – To me this really sums up the decision:

Like the protected books, plays, and movies that preceded them, video games communicate ideas—and even social messages—through many familiar literary devices (such as characters, dialogue, plot, and music) and through features distinctive to the medium (such as the player’s interaction with the virtual world). That suffices to confer First Amendment protection. Under our Constitution, “esthetic and moral judgments about art and literature . . . are for the individual to make, not for the Government to decree, even with the mandate or approval of a majority.”

Update 2: The CBLDF’s arguments were also cited in the majority decision:

Many in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s blamed comic books for fostering a “preoccupation with violence and horror” among the young, leading to a rising juvenile crime rate. See Note, Regulation of Comic Books, 68 Harv. L. Rev. 489, 490 (1955). But efforts to convince Congress to restrict comic books failed. Brief for Comic Book Legal Defense Fund as Amicus Curiae 11–15.5 And, of course, after comic books came television and music lyrics.

Walter Simonson’s Mighty Thor: Artist’s Edition To Launch at San Diego Comic-Con

Official Press Release

Walter Simonson’s The Mighty Thor: Artist’s Edition To Launch at San Diego Comic-Con

Regular and San Diego Comic-Con variant editions available now for pre-order through IDW
Simonson to appear at IDW booth throughout Comic-Con

[Thor Artist Edition Image]San Diego, CA (June 10, 2011)—Walter Simonson, legendary comics writer and artist of an overwhelmingly impressive catalog of books, will appear at the IDW booth every day during the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, signing copies of WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION. In addition to the regular edition available in July at comic stores, IDW will offer a limited Comic-Con exclusive edition featuring a variant cover, only available through IDW at the convention. Readers can now pre-order both editions direct from IDW Publishing for pick up at Comic-Con. The regular edition is also available for mail delivery, and orders will be filled after San Diego Comic-Con. The Comic-Con exclusive edition will only be available at the convention. Please click here to pre-order.
“I wrote and drew The Mighty Thor for Marvel more 25 years ago now, at a time when it was the fate of old comics to be deployed to the back issue bins in comic shops and at conventions.  No one had any expectations of reprints or trade collections.  Now, it’s a new day,” said Simonson. “I’m pleased that IDW and Marvel have seen fit to go back and revisit this work as they have. I couldn’t be more delighted to know Thor, Beta Ray Bill, and all their friends turned out to have a much longer shelf-life than I would ever have imagined.”
An oversized, hardcover collection, WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION will present Thor 337-340, Simonson’s first classic story arc, which introduced Beta Ray Bill, and Thor 360-362, Simonson’s choice for the second arc in the book. All the pages in the ARTIST’S EDITION have been scanned from Simonson’s personal original art to ensure the highest possible quality reproduction. While appearing to be in black and white, each page was scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for instance, white-out corrections and blue pencil notations.
“Walter’s run on The Mighty Thor is one of the best ever in comics—period,” said editor Scott Dunbier, “and to be able to see it now as an Artist’s Edition, printed the same size as drawn, and scanned from all the originals… well, I just can’t wait to get my paws on it!”
This will be Simonson’s first visit to San Diego Comic-Con since 2004. Joining Simonson will be his wife, Louise “Weezie” Simonson, a noted comic book editor and writer. WALTER SIMONSON’S THE MIGHTY THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION will be the first in a series of Artist’s Editions featuring legendary creators and comics from Marvel.
WALTER SIMONSON’S THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION ($100, hardcover, black and white, 176 pages, 12” x 17”) will be available in stores in July 2011. Now available for pre-order through IDWPublishing.com. ISBN 978-1-61377-038-2.
WALTER SIMONSON’S THOR: ARTIST’S EDITION San Diego Comic-Con Edition ($100, hardcover, black and white, 176 pages, 12” x 17”) will only be available through IDW during San Diego Comic-Con, and is now available for pre-order through IDWPublishing.com.

Five Prominent Video Game Composers To Attend Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con, April 29-May 1

Official Press Release

Five Prominent Video Game Composers To Attend Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con, April 29-May 1

Greg Edmonson, Sean Murray, Garry Schyman, Kevin Sherwood, Inon Zur To Meet Fans At Anaheim Comic Con

NEW YORK and ANAHEIM, Calif., April 19, 2011 – Music has been a huge part of video game production for years, and five composers who have created memorable themes and soundtracks for major releases such as “Bioshock,” “Dragon Age,” “Uncharted” and “Call of Duty: Black Ops” will be in attendance at next weekend’s Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con.  Greg Edmonson, Sean Murray, Garry Schyman, Kevin Sherwood, and Inon Zur will meet fans, sign autographs throughout the weekend and share some of their experiences in a special panel at the event, set for April 29 – May 1 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

The interactive panel and demonstration session with the five will take place on Sunday, May 1, at noon.

Greg Edmonson is perhaps best known for composing the soundtrack to the cult space western TV series “Firefly,” written and directed by Joss Whedon.  He is also the composer for the PlayStation 3 blockbuster video game series “Uncharted,” winner of Best Original Music from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Sean Murray has provided the emotional and memorable dramatic musical scores for numerous international films as well as hit television series and blockbuster video games spanning diverse genres from the gothic horror of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and urban action of “True Crime: Streets Of L.A.” to the emotionally intense themes of “Call of Duty: World At War” and “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” the biggest entertainment series in history.

Garry Schyman has emerged as one of the medium’s foremost composers, creator of the music for the multiple award-winning video game “BioShock,” winner of Best Original Score from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, SPIKE TV’s Best Original Video Game Score Award, and G4 TV’s Soundtrack of the Year Award. That success led his being assigned by Electronic Arts to create the hellish, dramatic score for Visceral Games’ adaptation of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem, “Dante’s Inferno.”

Kevin Sherwood is the composer, musician and sound designer for “Treyarch,” in which he displays his trademark heavy guitars.  He wrote the Nazi Zombie songs “Lullaby for a Dead Man,” “The One,” “Beauty of Annihilation,” “115” and “Abracadavre.”  Additionally, he wrote several of the “Dead Ops” chip tune songs and is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Inon Zur composes emotionally dynamic music for film, television, anime and video games. His  credits include hundreds of episodes of “Escaflowne,” “Digimon” and “Power Rangers”  as well as blockbuster videogame franchises such as ”Dragon Age,” “RIFT,” “TERA,” “Prince of Persia,” “EverQuest,” “Lineage,” “Crysis” and “Fallout,” for which he has received award nominations from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and SPIKE TV as well as top honors at the Hollywood Music In Media Awards.

Anaheim Comic Con will bring together thousands of fans of all ages and dozens of celebrities and industry professionals to celebrate the best in pop culture, movies, comics, toys, video gaming, television, gaming, original art, collectibles, contests and more.  Among the celebrities scheduled to attend are Tricia Helfer, Alaina Huffman, Harry Hamlin, Michael McMillian, John Schneider, Adam West, Burt Ward and Chase Masterson.

Anaheim Comic Con is the fourth stop on Wizard World’s 2011 North American tour, which to date has 13 events scheduled.  Hours are Friday, April 29, 5-9 p.m., Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., and Sunday, May 1, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m..  Tickets are available in advance online at www.wizardworld.com/anaheim.html at a savings over tickets purchased at the door.  Advance adult single-day tickets are $25 ($35 on site); three-day weekend tickets are $45 ($55 on site), and tickets are free for children age 10 and under when accompanied by a paid adult (limit two children per adult).  VIP packages with special entry and exclusive items are also available.
