Jeff Smith’s Bone Artist’s Edition is Coming!

IDW Publishing and Cartoon Books have announced Jeff Smith’s Bone Artist’s Edition, to be released this fall and featuring one of Smith’s most beloved stories: The Great Cow Race! Featuring Fone, Smiley and Phoney bone, Gran’ma Ben, the radiant Thorn, and, of course, those stupid, stupid Rat Creatures!

Jeff Smith and Vijaya Iyer launched Cartoon Books in 1991 with the release of the first issue of Bone. A certified smash-hit, Bone remains an evergreen standard for Cartoon Books, continuing to sell to children of all ages. Jeff Smith and Bone have won 10 Eisner Awards (while being nominated for another 11) and 11 Harvey Awards.

Jeff Smith’s Bone Artist’s Edition will be 144 pages and measure 12” x17”

What is an Artist’s Edition? Artist’s Editions are printed the same size as the original art. While appearing to be in black & white, each page has been scanned in COLOR to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for example, you are able to clearly see paste-overs, blue pencils in the art, editorial notes, art corrections. Each page is printed the same size as drawn, and the paper selected is as close as possible to the original art board.

Bone 20th Anniversary Collection Makes Its East Coast Debut in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – April 26, 2011 – The Baltimore Comic-Con is excited to announce the addition of renowned cartoonist Jeff Smith to the growing line-up of creators for this year’s show, taking place August 20-21, 2011.  As a pioneer of self-publishing, the Harvey and Eisner Awards-winning Smith is best know for his classic all-ages fantasy epic, Bone, an award-winning adventure about three cartoon cousins lost in a world of myth and ancient mysteries, as well as his current science-fiction series, RASL.Jeff_Smith_Fall_2010.jpgDebuting in July 1991, Bone is now a New York Times bestselling series published by Scholastic Books. July 2011 marks the 20th Anniversary of Bone #1 and to celebrate this momentous achievement, Smith’s own Cartoon Books is releasing a limited edition slipcase collection. The Bone: 20th Anniversary Full Color One Volume Collector’s Box Set will make it’s East Coast debut right here in Baltimore.

In 2009, Smith was the subject of the Emmy Award-winning documentary, The Cartoonist: Jeff Smith, Bone, and the Changing Face of Comics, and he is currently working on his creator-owned series, RASL, a sci-fi noir tale about an inter-dimensional art thief.

In addition, the Baltimore Comic-Con also welcomes Steve Hamaker, the artist responsible for supplying Smith’s 1344-page masterpiece with vibrant color. Hamaker joined Smith at Cartoon Books in 2000 and was tasked with the mission of bringing Bone from black and white to full-color for Scholastic Books. His work on the series has been nominated for the Harvey and Eisner Awards for Best Coloring.

It’s the weekend, which just means it’s quiet and slow enough I can read this week’s comics and hopefully catch up on the back log that’s built up to read and write reviews.  Here’s the news that kept us entertained in the last 24 hours.

ICv2 – Dynamite Lands ‘Voltron’ Comics License – Having just discussed Voltron with a friend the day before the timing is weird.  I can only conclude I was the reason this deal went through.  I accept thank you checks made out to “cash.”

Arts Beat – Graphic Books Best Sellers: Life on the Reservation – We could do a best sellers list for this blog, but I only know what I purchased.  And that’s only ever one copy of each book.  So there’d be a massive tie for first and the list would be worthless.   Here’s hoping the methodology behind this one is better.

The Gamers Hub – Bethesda and Dark Horse Announce RAGE Comic Books – Think if I metroed over to Bethesda, MD they’d chat with me about the comic?

Bone Survives Library Challenge


This week the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district has voted 10 to1that the graphic novel series Bone should not be banned in itsschools.  The graphic novel series came under fire earlier this month when parent Ramona DeLay objected to the series’ placement in theschoollibraries because it contains depictions of adults smoking,drinking,and gambling.  Visit CBLDF.org for a full overview of the case, including a response from Jeff Smith!

Supreme Court To Decide Whether States Can Regulate Violent Video Games


On Monday, the Supreme Court agreed to review a ruling that the First Amendment bars restrictions on video games with violent themes. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has actively opposed suchrestrictions,including participating in a 2008 friend-of-the-court (akaamicus)brief filed by the Media Coalition, addressing this same case. In hearing this case, the Supreme Court will decide whether or not it will adopt a new constitutional standard that allows states to ban violent content.  Full Story

Bone Saved. Committee Votes to Not Ban It.

Tuesday night a group of parents, teachers and media specialists from the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district agreed 10-1 that the series, Bone, by Jeff Smith, should not be banned from 12 of the district’s 18 elementary schools.

The issue was raised when a parent complained that the series depicted smoking, drinking and gambling and was inappropriate for young children.

From the Pioneer Press newspaper:

“I do stand strongly against this,” said DeLay, 35, of Apple Valley. “Smoking and drinking is not allowed on our school properties, but can be in our school library. I am advocating that the series of ‘Bone’ novels be pulled from our elementary libraries in our district.”

Disctrict media specialist Melinda Martin had this to say on the subject:

I respect her right to object to the series, but not for her to censor it for the rest. I feel you would be doing a disservice to our district if you remove this book from our elementary schools.

The series creator Jeff Smith has been pretty vocal on his thoughts over the issue.

The district has received 20 requests to ban a books over the last 20 years, the last was in 2006.  The last time a book was removed was in 1997.

Hearing on Bone Scheduled for Today

Today a committee from the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district will consider banning the graphic novel series “Bone,” by Jeff Smith, from 12 elementary school libraries.

The issue of the series came to light when a student’s mother complained about depictions of drinking, smoking and gambling thinking they were inappropriate for young children.  The series creator Jeff Smith commented on the situation at C2E2

The meeting will be at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at the district office, 3455 153rd St. W. in Rosemount.  We will update the situation once word gets out as to the committee’s decision.
