Update: What was horrible news has turned into a case of hacking and a cruel prank. Word has come out that Michael Davis is alive and well and has been the subject of a sustained hacking issue whose perpetrator(s) posted the false information about his demise.

This is news we can happily retract.

It was announced that Michael Davis, part of the coalition that founded Milestone Media and launched the “Dakotaverse” has passed away.

It was announced on Facebook by family members that Davis took his own life Sunday April 28.

Davis was a writer, producer, artist, mentor, entertainment executive and a co-founder of Milestone, the groundbreaking comic publisher. He was also the President and CEO of Motown Animation & Filmworks, which had comics published through Image, in the mid-90s after a rift with DC concerning Milestone.

Founded in 1993, Milestone Media was founded by a group of African-American artists and writers who would address the under-representation in American comics of minorities. The comic universe would create a wave that has impacted comics for the better. The creators delivered such iconic series as Hardware, Blood Syndicate, Icon, Static (aka Static Shock) and more.
