Sweet Paprika

Internationally renowned comic creator Mirka Andolfo has partnered with executive producer Erik Barmack and his production firm, Wild Sheep Content, for Sweet Paprika, Andolfo’s debut animated series. Barmack joins Sweet Paprika following an eight-year run at Netflix where, among other positions, he served as the Vice President, Head of International Originals, where he spearheaded the development of series including The Witcher from Poland and the United States, La Casa de Papel from Spain, The Rain from Denmark, Dark from Germany, and Sacred Games from India, among others. Barmack has continued his mission of developing esteemed international programming through his own firm, Wild Sheep Content, which he founded in May 2019. The company has secured a number of high-profile projects since its inception, including the animated collaboration with French African artist Nicholle Kobi, Queens, as well as the live-action adaptation of the bestselling Yakuza video game series with Sega and 1212 Entertainment. To date, Wild Sheep Content has secured 12 projects into development with platforms, studios, and third party financiers.

Announced last July, Sweet Paprika is an original idea from Andolfo that revolves around the erotic misadventures of a career-driven woman—Paprika—who reluctantly engages a charming, if immature, delivery boy named Dill. Consumed by her job at a major New York City publisher, Paprika learns to balance her own needs as she embarks on a frustrating, passionate romance with Dill. In October, Andolfo announced that she will also write and draw a Sweet Paprika comic book series, published by Image Comics beginning in July 2021, with Edizioni Star Comics releasing in Italy and Éditions Glénat in France. Arancia Studio is producing both the book and the animated project, with Grey Ladder Productions aiding the latter.

Mirka Andolfo’s Sweet Paprika Comes to Image in 2021

Image Comics has announced that Mirka Andolfo is developing a new comic book series based on her new IP Sweet Paprika, already announced as an animated project developed by Arancia Studio and Grey Ladder Productions, with Director Gabriele Pennacchioli.

The comic book series, written and drawn by Andolfo, has been announced in Italy by Edizioni Star Comics (the Italian largest manga publishing house) and will be published in France as well (Éditions Glénat). This sexy, intriguing, new book is produced by Arancia Studio and will launch from Image Comics in July 2021

A sexy rom-com (with reversed roles), Sweet Paprika is Bridget Jones’s Diary meets Sex And The City, with a twist of The Devil Wears Prada: a fun and captivating contemporary fairy tale—halfway between western comic and manga style—and set in a universe populated by angels and devils. The sensual component that constantly recurs in Andolfo’s works gives life to sexy and hilarious scenes, without neglecting the themes dear to the author, such as the harsh reality that career women are forced to live and the difficulty in balancing private life and work.

Paprika, a young woman of Italian origins living in New York, is a workaholic: success has sucked up her life, making her forget the importance of time for herself and for her loved ones. To bring havoc in her life will be Dill, a naive and handsome boy with an “angelic” otherworldly attitude, who will push the young woman to question herself and help her regain confidence in herself and in men. Their totally opposite characters and lifestyles will give life to fun and irresistible stories, seasoned with a pinch of eroticism.

A full color edition of Sweet Paprika #1 will be available at comic book shops in July 2021.

Mirka Andolfo Debuts Sweet Paprika, Her First Animated Project

Mirka Andolfo has announced her debut animated project, Sweet Paprika. Based on a series of sketches shared initially on social media, Sweet Paprika follows the erotic misadventures of a career-driven woman—Paprika—who reluctantly engages a charming, if immature, delivery boy named Dill. Though Andolfo has only hinted at this story through her drawings, her fanbase has quickly embraced the mismatched devil-and-angel couple, requesting sketch commissions and even cosplaying as the pair at major conventions.

Andolfo is partnering with the Italian media company Arancia Studio and CEO Davide G.G. Caci to develop the animated project, which has been optioned by Alessandro Regaldo at Grey Ladder Productions. Andolfo describes Sweet Paprika as an urban fairy tale for adults, carrying the coming-of-age themes of The Devil Wears Prada mixed with the progressive, feminist romance of Bridget Jones’s Diary and Sex and the City

Gabriele Pennacchioli, who received a Primetime Emmy Award for his role as Supervising Director on Netflix’s Love Death + Robots, will serve as Executive Producer. Pennacchioli has 25 years of experience in animated features, working on such films as Shark TaleShrek the ThirdKung Fu Panda, and How To Train Your Dragon, among others. Tommaso Triolo, of the Italian comedy troupe The Jackal, will write the script based on Andolfo’s story.

Sweet Paprika takes place in a world similar to ours, but inhabited by characters with the appearance of angels and devils. Protagonist Paprika is a New Yorker of Italian origin, working endless hours as a Chief Creative Officer at a publisher in the center of the thriving metropolis. Far from a traditional princess, Paprika’s job and career drive consume her, forcing her to neglect her personal needs, as well as her relationships with friends and family.

Enter Dill—a naïve and suave delivery boy whose “angelic” attitude grates against Paprika’s no-nonsense practicality. This odd-couple prince and princess embark on an unexpected courtship that both tests their temperaments, as well as embraces the themes of female empowerment and sexual empowerment.
