So Callie Boudreau pulls off her biggest heist yet, stealing money from her old job and making sure it goes back to the people they scammed it from. She then lives happily ever after on an island with Mercer, never to be heard from again as she lives out the rest of her good five years. The end.

Well, that would be the easy way, right? It nearly plays out like that too. Heartthrob doesn’t want to be a book that takes the easy way though.

The book opens with two federal agents investigating the Archway robbery, which unfolds over the next few pages as we see how Callie managed to successfully lift $400,000 in cash and get away with it. Hint: it involves Otto strong arming a bunch of security guards, ‘The Chain,’ and Callie punching her ex. That last part might doom her, but for now, two federal agents don’t believe a sweet girl with a heart transplant could do something like this. Sexism is weird.

Once again, Christopher Sebela does a great job of portraying Callie as a likeable character, especially as she’s starting to fall deeper down the hole of crime. She could have easily gotten the happy ending with staying on an island with Mercer, knowing that the money she gave back is being used for good and that Archway went down due to her actions, but she’s starting to become addicted to it. Between this and her fight with Mercer, we start to see the seeds being planted for the jump ahead pages that have ended each issue. The question is though is this Mercer’s influence or all Callie?

Robert Wilson IV and Nick Filardi kill it on art again, especially in the fight scenes with Otto and Callie, but the real bright spot is the scene where Scout outdrives the police. Scout recites about how she is slipstream, immaterial and ethereal, and the art makes it into reality. The streams of red from the taillights of her car and the police cars as they chase around the block are a nice touch, adding dimension to an already exciting scene. In terms of character design and expression though, I’m a real fan of the look Wilson gave Callie as “Anne Nymus.” It’s not flattering, but it really doesn’t have to be.

Heartthrob #3 gets into the real meat of the story now that the introductions to the concept and Callie’s life of crime are out of the way. The team delivers spectacularly on making this crime comic about a woman and her ghost boyfriend believable and enjoyable, especially when the small fissures in their foundation are beginning to form.

It’s sort of inevitable that Heartthrob gets compared to Sex Criminals. The two books do feature around love and crime with a side of fantasy. However, issue #2 of the Oni Press series from Christopher Sebela, Robert Wilson IV and Nick Filardi pulls itself further away from these comparisons as we learn more about Callie and Mercer.

Callie’s story definitely started out as something you’d read in a book like something like Eat, Pray, Love. Where after years of living with a heart defect and getting the miracle surgery that may only give her “five good years,” she decides to go on adventure to really live life. Except that adventure is to learn how to be a criminal from her boyfriend who is the ghost of the man Callie’s heart transplant comes from. Romance and soul searching needs more crime anyway.

However, even then, the story isn’t so much about the crime as it is about Callie trying to figure out just who she is after getting a new heart and quitting her job. Full of enthusiasm and uncertainty, Sebela writes Callie as a character that is so ultimately relatable that even if you’re not a heart transplant patient or a natural criminal mastermind like she is, you still understand just what goes through her mind and her heart. This was a definite strength Sebela had writing Mali in the tragically cancelled Welcome Back and it’s nice to see it carry over to this book.

The cast expands a bit in this book as Callie and Mercer hire a woman named Scout and a man named Otto to be a part of their crew. The design for Scout, the getaway driver, is especially eye catching, with her short hair, aviator shades, and leisure suit. Much like Callie, I was thinking outloud of how cool she was from the outset of her introduction. This is where Wilson and Filardi work so well together. That, and just the overall feel of the book. It would be so easy for this book to slip into the pastiche of 1970s stereotypes in terms of appearance, but Wilson and Filardi keep it organic.

Even with this new cast of characters working in, Callie and Mercer are still at the heart of it as their relationship blooms with all the weirdness, crime and mental uses of ‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac that comes with it.

Of course, most good love stories end somehow and we might just be seeing the end of it play out a bit in the last page of the story. The chain does break when you’re no longer in the shadows, it appears.

As Heartthrob #2 expands the universe it lives in, we start to understand just what goes through Callie’s mind as she turns to a life of love and crime. Even in the strangest of circumstances, her story is one that any reader can understand on a personal level. Between Sebela’s heartfelt writing as Callie learns the ropes of the criminal life and the gorgeous 70s artwork from Wilson and Filardi, Heartthrob #2 is about the strength of the heart just as much as it is about vulnerability.

Who doesn’t like a good heist movie?  The world’s audiences have more than embraced this sub genre in more ways than one, as can be seen all over popular culture these days. As the hilarious Prius commercial where a bunch of bank robbers evade police at every turn. Then there is the upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One movie, which finds the Rebellion looking to steal the plans for the Death Star.  On television, the Brits have been entertained by shows like the Saint and Hustle, while stateside we were definitely entertained by the hi-jinks in Leverage. Then there are the traditional movies like the Italian Job and Ocean’s Eleven, which provides twists and turns, while being very tongue in cheek.

A good heist story needs a few elements to make it entertaining to its audience. One of those elements is a protagonist which its audience can root for despite their criminal intent. The second is the actual heist needs to be something of value or what has not been done before, both of these are reasons for going on a heist, and usually in these stories, it is always to not do what they do any longer, to finally retire like Sean Connery’s character in Entrapment when we first meet him. The third thing is who makes up the group, what specialties/ skills each character brings to the job. Lastly,  is how do they get away with it, much like Fast Five, this is usually the part where all the smarts and skill sets are most in play.

Heartthrob is a variation of all those examples and some elements of the heist story, while being original. As the preview describes it:” A new series about bank heists and thieving hearts from writer Christopher Sebela (Welcome Back), artist Robert Wilson IV (Bitch Planet), and colorist Nick Filardi (Powers). Callie Boudreau hasn’t been herself lately. After a lifetime sidelined by illness, she’s rescued by a miracle cure in the form of heart transplant surgery, but the life she returns to doesn’t fit her anymore. Besides the morally questionable job, the crappy boyfriend and the crippling hospital bills, Callie finds herself developing new tastes, unfamiliar urges and a mouth like a sailor. As she balances what she has to do with what she wants to do, a mystery man shows up to teach her that instead of waiting for her new life, she should go out and steal it.  “The internal monologue of Callie drives this story, as she finds out that a heart transplant is simply more than what she expected.  By issue’s end, Callie has evolved to an even more a badass version of herself.

Overall, an interesting story which I did not think I would necessary relate to, as the inner rumblings of ho hum office work reverberate throughout the story much like Office Space. The story by Christopher Sebela is truly a gift, that the reader will be unwrapping over and over again, to see what they have missed the first few times they read it. The art by Robert Wilson IV, is very much reminiscent of Archer, but having an identity all its own. Very entertaining altogether, an absorbing story which feels like the beautiful bastard of Heart Condition and Fight Club.
